    these campaign promises seem overstated. he probably said they’ll start a discussion on how many times you’re allowed to spit on immigrants (as opposed to the current unlimited). and apparently declaring war on germany is “hey germany why do you want a big army?”. succdems.

      they actually do have real policy plans around getting the white supremacy out of the french identity. it is called new france. also he is a communist. he literally said he will leave NATO. LFI base has a significant portion of real radicals, he understands dual power. like him getting elected is a big deal if it happens you don’t have to project learned american doomerism onto every countrys politics. no investigation, no right to speak!

      He’s actively building a campaign around the concept of “new France” (black and muslim inhabitants of France) as a positive thing.

      He started his campaign with a large rally in Saint-Denis, attented by thousends of young people from that neigbourhood. For the Americans, that’s like starting your campaign in Dearborn, Michigan and Harlem, NY at the same time.

      He used to be an entryist Trotskyist, but he split form the PS, and formed his own party.

      Americans, don’t express outspoken opinions about things you have no knowledge about challenge, impossible.

          yankee doomerism

          In Bourdieu’s La Distinction (no hear me out, I’m actually going somewhere with this), he describes how matters of taste (do you prefer lamb, or poultry; rock, jazz or chansons; etc., but much more in detail) correlete, on an aggregate level, with socio-economic strata, and act as signifiers which tell other people whoch segment you belong to and are formed as a reaction on the socio-economic conditions you’re living - in both in the large scale class-relations way of seeing this, but also in the very mundane aspects of life. For example, certain groups in French society express a preference for pot-au-feu type meals, which need to be on the stove for 6 or 8 hours, and thus are impossible to make without a housewife, etc. You see what the general idea is.

          I have this not fully fledged idea which I cannot get rid of that the American left has lost so much as a result of CIA-involvement, that they involuntarily have adopted an outspoken preference for losing a signifier. The doomerism, the idea of being an unsalvagable nation, theoryless declarations that the entire US working class are actually all Labour aristocracy etc. There are so many times I’m confronted with instances where this lens makes sense.

    Why is the Macron 2.0 candidate doing better than the leftist candidate in run-off polls?

    I figured having a second anti-establishment candidate would UP the odds of beating Le Pen (cuz of all the vibes-based voters that just go with whoever sounds populist). But I guess more libs are willing to vote fash than even consider a leftist?

      Polling companies assume (note that I didn’t say “find in their results”) that a very large portion of centrist voters will not back Melenchon in the second round. Pollsters almost never use raw data, and add weights, but the way they do this with Melenchon is not backed by the data: in the second round of parliamentary elections, when it was a two-way-race between a candidate from La France Insoumise (LFI, Melenchon’s party), and a candidate of the Rassemblement National (RN, Le Pen’s extreme-right party), a majority voted for LFI-candidates.

      Furthermore, Melenchon’s base is not with the people who vote in every electoin, but with people who have to be mobilised. You should check the polls for the first round of the previous 2 or 3 French presidential elections, and you’ll see that he rises exponentially when he starts campaigning. The fact that he’s already more or less surpassing the centrist candidates for second place in the first round, is very hopefull as this is happening much earlier than in previous elections.

      Lastly, Melenchon is rethorically the strongest politician in the Global North, that is not hypeverbally. Nobody gives a speech like him, or debates like him. He will destroy anyone in a one-on-one debate if he makes it to the second round.
