Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says in report that maps path back below danger zone

In a strategic retreat in the fight against climate change, the United Nations has acknowledged that Earth has lost its chance to prevent some of the worst of global warming's harms. So now the world must figure out how to get temperatures below the danger zone and back to safety, officials say.

Even if a socialist revolution were to sweep the world tomorrow, it will take a miracle of science, technology, and politicking to reach net zero or reverse carbon emissions. And thats a miracle on top of the bloodless socialist revolution already. Minus the actual blood and toil of overthrowing capitalism, we’re very far away from ending global warming.

Nah, I really think a global socialist revolution tomorrow would be enough to do net zero in 10-15 years. Like 5 years to build as many solar and nuclear power plants as global production allows, then in the next 5 years most of the actual progress gets done because we’ve built out more production capacity and learned all the boneheaded mistakes we’re making, then the last 5 is whittling away the most difficult sources of emission and building out enough excess power to use highly inefficient carbon capture technology.

But that’s still on top of the miracle of the bloodless socialist revolution already, yeah.

Net zero already doesn’t actually mean zero, because we can plant forests too. 10-15 years is pretty plausible.

Speaking of alternative energy sources I’m really hoping fusion power gets worked out soon. Depending on the scale of energy produced, that opens up all kinds of doors. You know, provided there’s still enough time to walk through them.

I’m hopeful for fusion too, but I don’t think it’s viable under capitalism.

The problem with (fission) nuclear power is that, with for-profit companies financing power plants by mortgages, which is what we have, it takes so long to build the plant that the mortgage has accumulated so much interest that it’ll take forever to pay off. So even though they’re more profitable than a gas powered plant once completed, that extra profit is going towards paying off a huge mortgage for a very long time, before finally actually paying off.

By any reasonable future forecast, a fusion power plant is going to be an even larger up front cost than a fission one, so it just can’t work without state planning.

You can see a big difference with solar though, which absolutely does not have this problem. Setting up a new solar plant is fast and cheap now, and now that it’s cheap, companies and countries are itching to get in on it. But of course there are oil lobbyists and anti-environmental death cultists in the way of that. But they’re actively fighting against what’d be more profitable, so even under capitalism, there’s only so long until solar power wins.

(But the timeline for solar power winning under capitalism still sucks and anything that averts climate change faster is better.)

We should definitely keep earnestly working on fusion, because the potential is so great, and the fundamental physics are sound (after all, solar is just harvesting the waste energy of fusion). But there is a high likelihood that it will not be ready soon, or ever, and so we have to plan as if we won’t have access to it in time.

It seems to me the UN issues a climate change disaster warning about every 3 to 6 months. The warnings keep getting more dire. Yet every time the MSM just ignores it. If I wasn’t living through this period of time and I was from the future - I couldn’t believe it. It’s unbelievable.

Not a single word about the economic mode of production causing this or what the actual drastic measures we need to take to prevent it. We will look fondly on the “poor” living standards in the USSR, Cuba and DPRK because that’s much closer to a realistic rate of consumption.
