news@hexbear.net•ICE plans to give officers gloves that can deliver painful electric shocksEnglish
60·3 days agoThe manufacturer warns the device should not be used as punishment, against people merely exhibiting “verbal defiance or belligerence” or on high-risk populations such as children, pregnant women or elderly or disabled people.
Peters said he expected the devices to be misused by a small number of employees, as with other policing technologies, but he said they are unlikely to cause injuries. He said it would be important for ICE to have robust policies and training in place.
I don’t even feel like I need to comment on this overall news, but I’ve highlighted the parts that make me think the vendor knows 100% dead ass how these will be used in practice.

19·11 days agoThat sucks. I’d echo the other comments that say this is salvageable, but priority has to be a) you protecting yourself and b) her being able and willing to get the help she needs to address whatever lead to this behavior. Both the excessive spending but also hiding it and going deep into debt on your shared account.
If you are in a relationship with someone who has a destructive addiction then you are exposing yourself to the fallout from that.
Also I’m sorry to hear all this, obviously this means a lot given that you are engaged and she helped you in the past.

10·11 days ago…taking photos of sea turtles today, and happened to walk by a man throwing a cast net, up very close to some jettys, in the breakers. It’s not a very good spot to catch bait, which is what you use a cast net for.
If you give the benefit of the doubt does it sound reasonable to assume that snaring a turtle is what they came out to do?
I guess I’ll play advocate for the couple and say, the guy didn’t know that was a bad place to cast his net, he got excited when he saw turtle, flagged his partner down for some lucky pics, and set it free.
But if you asked me for an honest gut check I’d wager they went out to get some quirky pics for the 'gram and either ought to have known better or did know better and thought the rules didn’t apply to them. I do not think you are betraying any ACAB principles to report this to wildlife department in your state.

12·13 days agoI like the theatrical cut, but the special edition has the extended part with Ripley at the space hospital and Newt’s family going out to the derelict craft. I felt like that undermines the theme of Weyland-Yutani willingly putting all the colonists at risk by the xenomorphs, but the fan wiki says they were out there on company orders so I guess it still works.

Chapotraphouse@hexbear.net•Is the gotcha of "This [transphobe] is on HORMONES, THAT'S LIKE BEING TRANS. LOL" starting to sound like the old "This [Homophobe] is obviously a closet case" to anyone else?English
13·29 days agoIs it being used that way? I certainly recall not too long ago libs were still using le Trump is le gay for le Putler, removedMcConnell, etc. and it’s like, these guys are really missing the point. If smug libs are saying it the way you’re describing, yes that is harmful to trans people.
But I try to limit my internet to places like this and cool, well-adjusted people on twitter (lawl) and so I usually see this gotcha deployed in the context that the Joe Rogan’s, RFK Jr’s, Hegseth’s of the world are restricting GAC to people who need while benefiting from it themselves or even pushing it on others.

news@hexbear.net•Pete Hegseth Announces New Required Pentagon Testosterone TestsEnglish
40·30 days agoMy understanding is that the rate of medically low testosterone is pretty low outside of people with hypogonadism or injury, and of that small number of men some portion won’t even experience symptoms from low hormone levels. A doctor at a TRT clinic is probably going to have a hand wavey set of ranges they can use to prescribe test to anyone wanting to pay for it.
I think they’re either going to have to set the standard range at something a) medically justifiable and it will hardly flag anybody b) arbitrarily low so they can get everyone on TRT c) leave it to be subjective case by case.
First thought was how will this affect older
service membersWARFIGHTERS who are “deficient” and decline the “voluntary” HRT.Second thought was that all the young service members opting in are shoe-ins to get the docs to say hmm yes I see from your chart that you could be considered deficient, when would you like to start your permanent steroid program? I’m sure there’s a lot of juicing in .mil and LEO forces and this is a great way to put an official seal of approval on it.

30·1 month agoTo drive home your point about retail traders taking out loans to invest, Koreans of all stripes from pensioners to young adults have been borrowing money to invest not just in equities, but to buy shares in leveraged funds, i.e. 2x or 3x your gains and 2x or 3x your losses, comprised of semiconductor stocks. Borrowing at interest and hyperfocusing on one part of the economy in products that amplify downside when the bubble bursts
Soil/soilless or hydroponic growing media. Lights. Air circulation. Ventilation.
A word on that last one; depending on what your living space is like, one of the big requirements that might not be immediately obvious is some exhaust fans to remove heat from your system. People with even modest lighting setups who are just letting their home HVAC system handle the extra requirements are going to notice the load. Honestly maybe just wait for the cold months and let your grow help with your heating needs lol.
I’ve never done this but I’m sure there are relatively secure and light-proof ways of rigging exhaust ducts to a window you keep partially opened. Or for bigger systems or people go as wild as running duct through an attic and exhausting outside, but like I said that’s far out there.
Grow tents of various dimensions are quite a popular solution for creating indoor controlled environments and they are cheap and cheerful on the various online retailers. IME people can look at them and think they are portable clothes closets, if they don’t notice all the wires and ducts you’ve got running out of them, and the fans humming and lights glowing lol.
For processing, if you aren’t concerned with keeping maximum production going at all times I think that drying your flowers in the same tent you grew them in after harvest is very straightforward, you’ll already have something set up for exhaust and maintaining the right humidity by managing airflow.
Edit: For how to grow, hydroponic may be your best option indoors even if setup is a bit more involved. It spares you having to lug bags of growing media inside, just have to keep track of salinity and pH of your nutrient solution. bourgeoisie_burgers mentioned ebb & flow, another option might be deep water culture or DWC. Picture a 27 gallon (102L) plastic tote with an aquarium pump providing aeration through an air stone, then just circular holes in the lid with little pond nets in the holes with a tiny bit of perlite or clay balls for the plant to start rooting, and all the roots growing all into the nutrient solution.
For lights, LEDs seem like the current wave. High output fluorescent is also an option but to get a good light intensity for flowering you’d really be cramming them into the space. IDK if high pressure sodium lights are still the gold standard but then you’re looking at higher startup and running costs and dedicated cooling for the fan hood, in addition to the exhaust you’ll already want for your growing space.
Have you considered pruning out the main/tallest stem and gently tying all the next tallest stems to the side of the pot? To sort of bring the height down and also encourage a growth pattern like a broad table or disc.
Idk how much longer your growing season is or if you’re planning to trigger flowering by going indoors but it would not be far fetched for that to reach the top of the pole even if it starts flowering now, let alone waiting for more vegetative growth.
Given that’ll be a big girl, have you thought about potting up to a larger size growing container? If it’s not too large already to safely transplant without breaking branches. That’ll take pressure off your watering chores.

History@hexbear.net•History bears, do you have any good books on the American revolution?English
7·1 month agoThanks for the book recs in this thread, I am involved in hosting a small 4th get together today and some light reading will give my brain something to latch on to instead of simmering internally until I turn the 4th of July into the 4th of Shit.
I would also suggest Lies My Teacher Told me by James W. Loewen, it is a similar spirit to People’s History but might be a more approachable read without dumbing anything down. It’s been a few years since I read it but it does a great job deconstructing the civic religion sort of telling of our national myths that is typical to school textbooks.
The dearth of Olive Oyl rule 34 fan art online is a serious issue and in this essay I will…
