  • i doubt there are many people, outside of a couple of idealists, that think that project policies will have a big impact into something outside the project itself. all of what you say it’s true but it’s a different discussion to have

I think this is the crux of the issue. This organic boycott of AI is understandable, but its a huge waste of energy because it has no effect on the money or political environment.

  • I’m getting tired of people acting like AI code isn’t insidiously hard to understand and dysfunctional. It’s super useful for random tiny short-lived projects. It’s not useful for ANYTHING that wants long-term maintenance.

This is a reading comprehension problem.

The KDE policy specifically forbids using LLMs to generate PR descriptions and review comments. That means the contributor has to fully understand the changes they’re proposing enough to explain them to another person. The onus of dealing with the LLM is left entirely up to the individual writing the PR.

That said, I personally am uncertain that genAI generated code is eligible for copyright. That’s bigger risk for open source project than AI cooties imo

  • Honestly seems fine to me. I’m not pro-AI by any means, but I am getting tired of people acting like AI code has some special property that makes it impossible for humans to read and understand.

We can’t keep trying to fight national policy issues with club bylaws. Let’s keep trying to stop AI data center construction and maybe we can organize some kind of political party as part of that struggle. A sort of vanguard for the people.
