I got a OLED Steam Deck last year when they were still cheapish. I love it, but now that the prices have gone up I’m thinking “damn I could kinda use that extra money, I could get more than I paid for it if I sold now.”
On the other hand I’d kind of feel like a dirty scalper? You know, taking advantage of a price increase feels like I’d be ripping people off?
I like it and use it a fair amount, but it’s not like it’s much better than my laptop for games outside of having a way better screen (my laptop is not oled in the slightest but I could always buy a monitor if I really want pretty colours).
I’m not sure. Also like, I don’t feel like I should have something that is essentially an expensive treat when the world is like gestures around at everything plus I’m poor and probably should be saving more.
Buuuuut then there is also the thing of AI bubble making anything computer related super expensive for the foreseeable future so maybe I should hold on to it?
I wonder if we’ll be getting 3rd party companies making cheaper steam based hendhelds in the future. But with RAM and stuff being the way it is right now, who knows.
Don’t feel like you don’t deserve a treat just because other people have it worse than you. Plenty of reasons to not get a treat but IMHO a steam deck you use every day or at least use it a fair amount by your definition is worth it. Getting rid of it for money is a tough call. If you really need the money for an emergency expense, do it. If you just think it’ll go down the money toilet without actually benefiting you then don’t.

I don’t buy into this whole Protestant Work Ethic/Mandatory Leftist Asceticism dichotomy. Don’t feel like you have to give up your possessions because other people want you to feel that proletarians shouldn’t have access to luxuries.
There absolutely will not be any third party handhelds that undercut the Steam Deck, the only companies with a greater economy of scale than Valve are Sony and Microsoft and neither of them would ever decide to make a loss leader Linux handheld. Smaller manufacturers simply cannot make that financial decision without instantly bankrupting themselves, so continue to expect everything to become much more expensive.

It’s not scalping if you’re not driving the price up as a middle man taking limited supply.
If something is not used, it’s probably better put to someone else’s purpose. Factor in the effort of selling though, sometimes it takes a surprising amount of work to find a decent buyer.
If you want a cheaper gaming system check out BC250 builds while the board prices are still low. You’ll need the expense of a PSU, drive (gen3 m2s are surprisingly expensive :() and a couple of fans but it’s probably less than you could get for a deck assuming you have peripherals and quite a bit more powerful (not as portable as a laptop but still small).
Silly to feel guilt over a toy though. Play is a part of being human and having a small computer isn’t baby seal hunting or something

I saved up some of my last paycheck at one job for months to get one when they first came out. It’s honestly become a kind of important central part of the house. It gets used more often then it doesn’t get used. If you use it, it’s worth it.
The Steam Deck will always be the cheapest full handheld. Chinese ARM handhelds are the supposed to be cheap alternative to Lenovo and Asus and they’re also getting expensive even when they’re trying to recycle surplus mobile parts - AYN/Retroid have been doing price increases every few months and the most powerful ones still don’t play games as good as the Steam Deck
The steam deck is great because it’s huge, it has better cooling so it can sustain high load a lot better, so imo it’s unlikely that any real competitor will come out of the Chinese ARM/FEX companies because all those companies release really small handhelds. Same reasoning why the Steam Machine is like 80% heatsink and cooling by weight.
It’s also the only one that has an elite/pro controller built in, with 4 back buttons and 2 programmable trackpads.

The only question that matters IMO is: will the thing you do with the money you get make you happier than the Deck currently is? If yes then go for it, if not then hold off. Assuming you don’t need the money for an emergency, of course.
I would probably just save the money for future emergencies I have a bad habit of thinking the worst is about to happen.

Android handhelds are gonna be able to run SteamOS soon, so something to think about.
See that’s what I’m hoping. Third parties are already making cheaper Steam Machines than what Valve is selling.

software moreso. With the release of the steam frame (the vr headset) valve will be using an ARM version of proton. Android devices use ARM architecture so it probably won’t be long until we get steam os CFW for various android handhelds and probably some phones.
You can already play PC games on android through things like gamehub and winulator but the optimization is middling. On my retroid flip 2 I can play most 2/2.5D games with minimal issues and I’ve gotten games like Fallout 3 and Dark Souls 2 to run but I wouldn’t call them playable. In fact, I’ve found that the same games that aren’t playable through windows emulation are incredibly playable through switch emulation so I would definitely lean towards calling it a software issue.
Hopefully proton for ARM will be a similar jump in performance as proton already was for linux gaming compared to things like wine.
Is the difference between the two amounts significant enough to you that you will be okay with never playing it again? You okay with purchasing a second one at future prices should you change your mind? Also, you’re allowed to enjoy stuff comrade. You aren’t becoming a monk I don’t think. I dont see third party stuff happening. It hasn’t yet, but they’ve been around for 4 years so far and that hasn’t happened yet.

Scalpers are hated because they have an inflationary effect on the market. You’d actually be creating a deflationary effect on the market. Prices are high because demand is higher than supply. You’d be the opposite of a scalper.
