I’ve been playing the multiplayer and Horde mode in the new Gears of War and I constantly see people using premium character skins that each cost 20 bucks (or your local equivalent) a pop. 20€ is what I’d be willing to pay for a whole DLC, or alternatively that’s like several days’ worth of groceries.
If you buy a cosmetic in game I legit think you should be punched in the stomach until you throw up for every NZ dollar equivalent you spent.
get this
in where winds meet there are more than one guild were, for the weekly war mode, a wealthy person in the guild will buy the custom outfit on sale that week for everyopne participating so they are outfit coordinated
I was playing some terrible korean mmo for a while once. For some reason they let you buy some mid market SUV as a mount. I got my money’s worth in fun driving over elf nerds in a god awful suv.
Just remember, the way you think about people who buy in-game content is the way other people think about you for buying games.
Dimensionless point brain: Buying microtransactions
Subatomic brain: Buying AAA games
Atomic brain: Pirating AAA games

It’s just how everything’s getting further and further monetised and that monetisation being gradually normalised that just sucks
Ew.
Gears of War in 2026 with Microsoft as a BDS target? I’d consider dropping those stones instead of throwing any more.
Fair enough. I do think it’s funny that the writing in the campaign plays with anti-war, anti-militarism, anti-capitalism, pro-worker and pro-union themes but at the end of the day, it’s a game published by fucking Microsoft
The entire game industry gets away with this shit because the gerontocracy will never stop circling the wagons on video games > violence.
To show off their disposable income. That’s all it is. A base instinct in a capitalist world.
but its a bunch of fortnite skins
I’ve never paid money for cosmetic content
Like, what’s the fucking point?
If you were a cosmetic id buy you
oh…
I bought a rare hat with an effect on it tf2 for 2 dollars like 15 years ago. I thought it made my engineer look snazzy.
I’m not gonna defend microtransactions locking skins and cosmetic changes, but idk, sometimes I want my character to have a certain look, even if it’s completely irrelevant to the gameplay or even detrimental (I love playing fashion souls). If everything in games was purely utilitarian we would only have like text games and pong.
At least TF2 had an extremely long life.
The real sad thing to do back then was to buy Portal 2 cosmetics.
Customising your character/weapons/gear/base/vehicle is great which is why it’s sad it’s so often nickle and dimed to hell and back
Yea I miss when skins were unlockable through gameplay rather than a storefront
which gears is this? my new housemate just came with a 360 and my friend has Go3, im stoked.
The new one. Gears of War 3 is the best of the original Xbox 360 games though, have fun
I’d rather games have cosmetic microtransactions instead of paying for DLC or in game currencies. Game developers have to make money somehow. If a bunch of other people buy cosmetics, maybe the developers release DLC for free.
There is a concept called a ‘loss leader’. Grocery stores will sell certain products at a loss because it brings more customers in and then those customers buy other things. Game console companies used to sell consoles at a loss or low margin because they would make it back on licensing fees for game sales.
If the developers offer expansion content and/or free online-multiplayer gameplay, there is a loss of income. However, when people are playing the game more, they’re more likely to purchase cosmetics. Then the developers make more money than lost.
Eh I mean I’m sort of fine with the status quo as long as its not p2w. People making questionable financial decisions buying purely cosmetic items mean other players might not have to pay as much
20 bucks though

20 bucks is 20 bucks
