Brianna would probably go apeshit if you made the same format but with good jew, bad jew.

Also a very deliberate use of transsexual because she’s not actually ok with either of these women existing.

She’s also implying that “normal” trans women are straight, and adults. One of these is a child in school uniform. Lots of layers here.

This is something I’ve struggled with for a while so I’m just going to ask and hope that no one gets mad at me for it - what is meant when you guys say someone is against their own existence?

Like in this example, I wouldn’t argue against her having internalized bigotry but it seems like a leap to say that an openly trans woman is against the existence of trans women as a whole. Something about assigning this viewpoint to her doesn’t sit well with me, like my gut feeling is that there’s something less honest about that than just calling it transphobia, but I’m 100% speaking out of ignorance here.

For starters, Brianna Wu is part of a pseudoscientific cult known as transmedicalists. Transmedicalism was originally a method of medical gatekeeping that had the purpose of keeping as many trans people as possible from transitioning, drive most of us right back into the closet forever and to make sure that the tiny minority of trans people that was allowed to access hormones, surgeries etc. would remain largely invisible and completely isolated from each other.

These systems of gatekeeping have very gradually losened up in a lot of places during the last 30 years, and the academic justifications for them have been debunked in their entirity. However, remnants of these gatekeeping systems are still in place almost everywhere, there are still a lot of psychiatrists and psychotherapists that cling to these outdated believes and force them on their patients, they still permeate the public perception of trans people - and some trans people fully buy into them and wield these believes against the rest of the community.

Brianna Wu is one of these so-called transmeds or truscums. These people believe that they are the only true trans people and that most other trans people are faking it for attention, for fetishistic reasons or due to a mental illness. They also tend to believe that transness in itself constitutes a serious mental illness. As you can imagine, these views are extremely inflammatory, bigotted and harmful to the community at large. It is not surprising that many transmeds routinely collaborate with outspokenly transphobic cis people in an extremely sycophantic way.

In the case of Brianna Wu, a core part of her transmedicalism is a seething hatred of lesbian trans women, which she views as some kind of fetishistic straight men. On a surface level, this mostly expresses as the annoying habit of never shutting up about her very mediocre husband, but it goes way beyond that. You see, most trans women are lesbian, so back in the mid 20th century a handy way to keep a lot of us from transitioning was to just pretend that you have to be straight to actully be trans. That instantly rules out more than half of us, which is a big win if you want all trans women to either kill themselves or live as unhappy alcoholics. There was obviously never any reliable evidence for the absurd idea that only cis women can be lesbians, but it somehow became the consensus thanks to a charlatan and fraud named Ray Blanchard. Now, Blanchard and the other psychiatrists who pushed that bs did not believe any of us are actually women and refused to gender us correctly as long as we were still transitioning, so they coined the terms Autogynephile (AGP) for trans lesbian and Homosexual Transsexual (HSTS) for straight trans women. Now, when you look at OP, you might notice one of the terms being turned into a pun there, and that it’s the term for the bad trans woman, whereas the other one is described as a “normal transsexual gal”.

If this makes you wonder how bisexuals fit into that, they don’t, the people who coined these terms were also deeply biphobic and just assumed bisexuals were either particularly sicko AGPs or HSTSs in denial. They also denied that nonbinary people exist and the idea that asexuals exist probably never crossed their mind. If you wonder how trans men fit into all of this, they don’t, a core reason why the number of trans men transitioning has tripled in recent years is that most of them were just written off as fakes in the past, and that doctors didn’t even bother to make up excuses because under patriarchy it’s easy to pretend that obviously a lot of women would want to be a man.

I could go on, but explaining to a cis person how transmedicalists view issues like passing, medical transitioning, pathologizing transness, gender roles etc. is something i’m not gonna do. You would not be able to tell that apart from struggles that trans people in general have to deal with. That’s a conversation we need to have among ourselves because it is too complex, nuanced and painful for cis people to take part in. Let’s just leave it at the following:

        • transmedicalists support strict medical gatekeeping of gender affirming care because they think there’s real and fake trans people
        • transmedicalists usually deny the existence of nonbinary people
        • transmedicalists often oppose any gender affirming care for minors, in some cases they even agree with transphobes to keep them from socially transitioning
        • the most extreme transmedicalists also hate lesbian trans women and use the terms AGP and HSTS
        • all of this has for decades been in total defiance of the scientific consensus among leading experts, but regardless still informs the treatment of trans people in large parts of society and the medical establishment
        • You see, most trans women are lesbian,

Really? Thats fascinating. I was lead to believe we “mostly” followed the averages of our genders on this. Do you remember what poll or something you saw to support this or is this more something you gathered from experience? My previous assumption would’ve been to say that most trans women are “at least” into women.

          • It’s mostly anecdotal, reliable numbers on this are impossible to find specifically because transmedicalism forced so many trans women to lie when questioned about their sexuality. I feel that bi trans people are common, or at the very least out much more often than bi cis people, but I still have a strong hunch that at least a plurality of trans women is lesbian. My experience with trans men is even more circumstantial, but a lot of them are gay. With nonbinary people it gets more muddy, as that group is even further from being a monolith. But the overall impression is very clear.

Ofc that kind of anecdotal evidence has a serious problem of ingroup bias, as both trans sapphics and trans straight girls tend to form their own groups that interact very little with each other. Yes, there’s larger communities, but even when they have a much broader draw than my circle, they strongly lean one way or the other.

But even when I’m at events that have a larger audience than my corner of the queer community or when I’m talking to therapists who specialize in gender affirming care, it at least leaves the same impression: trans women who mostly date men are very far from making up a majority of trans women.

Internalized bigotry to the point of believing people like yourself shouldn’t exist, but like all bigots, giving an exception to themselves for their standards and just ignoring the cognitive dissonance

See Peter Theil and the German AFD lesbian leader

Can you give me some reading on these two? Obviously I’ve heard about Theil a decent amount but nothing about his personal life.

I had believed that the cognitive dissonance would be wholly insurmountable for sexuality in a way that it isn’t for things you can handwave away by believing hard enough in eugenics (just repeat “I shouldn’t have been born like this” enough times that you can maintain your bigotry), but I really haven’t thought deeply about it. It’s just so hard for me to imagine someone being openly lgbt while saying it shouldn’t be a thing and not being crushed to death under the cognitive dissonance. What is the out so they can live with that?

I’m capable of picturing someone openly lgbt advocating that they should be second-class citizens, that’s unfortunately something that happens as a way to try to find acceptance in a deeply bigoted crowd. I can’t figure out how someone would say they shouldn’t exist entirely and just…live with that contradiction.

What is the out so they can live with that?

            Class.

You’re looking at identity by itself. You need to intersect it with class. A poor prole gay does not behave the same way a member of the bourgeoisie who is gay behaves. Class insulates them from the side effects of what they sow against others in their identity. Class supersedes identity in almost all circumstances where it intersects, a member of the bourgeoisie will choose their class interests before their identity interests if the two interests are not aligned with one another.

Identity politics alone do not provide a good analysis of outcomes within groups without looking at the intersection with class.

To be absolutely clear here - I am not saying identity politics are bad, I am saying they are incomplete without the inclusion of class in the analysis.

I think I was just taking it too literally. What you’re saying is obviously correct, I was getting stuck because they don’t literally believe in anti-lgbt ideology, they’re just willing to adopt it without hesitation when it’s convenient for them. It makes sense to talk as though they believe in that when functionally it is their ideology, but it isn’t literally given that they’d become pro-lgbt overnight if that ever benefited them more. There’s no cognitive dissonance when you don’t care enough to form real beliefs.

Thiel famously funded Hulk Hogan’s lawsuit against Gawker after they revealed that he’s gay.

Alice Weidel is more baffling. She is very on top of how her living with her wife in Switzerland is talked about by the media. Like the first article you can find about her being homosexual is with the Bild basically the worst tabloid in Germany and she just mentioned as a sidenote that she is living with a female partner.

Her exact wording was “i’m not queer, i live with a woman i have known for 20 years”. It’s not a side note, every word there is extremely intentional. It’s a declaration of “look how stable and monogamous and highly respectable my relationship is” while publicly disavowing literally anybody else in the community. Also note how she does not use the term lesbian, either, and that her partner of more than 20 years is not her wife because she thinks actual marriage should be reserved for straight people and that a civil union is enough for her. No, seriously, that’s her actual, official position on gay marriage.

We are communist, who’s thinking and worldview is driven by dialectical materialism, which naturally destroys contradiction, dissonance, and seeks logical outcome. This does not mean we are free of bigotry or contradiction (let he who is without sin cast the first stone), but our worldview pushes us away from those things and towards analysis

Reactionaries do not operate off coherent worldview, their thinking is driven by gut instinct fueled by propaganda and whatever other horseshit is fed to the average westerner. They live with contradiction easy i-love-not-thinking

An Uncle Tom will happily enslave and murder his own race until he’s the only one left.

Brianna is doing the trans version. She doesn’t give a fuck about trans people, she will happily work against all of us until we’re all dead as long as she’s ok. All the elements above are transphobic elements she’s worked in there intentionally. JK Rowling dogwhistles her transphobia more quietly than this image does.

            • It’s tonedeaf to use a term that was coined in a different historic context for a group that has its own experience with oppression. We have several words for assimilationist trans people attacking members of their own community, like transmed and truscum. One can point out that such a thing exists in a lot of groups, but I agree that porting such terms is tonedeaf. I would not call Candace Owens or Milo Yiannopoulos truscum, either, it would make zero sense as that word exists in a very specific historical context that just does not apply to cis people even though transmedicalism is originally a discourse wholly invented by cis people.

            • no i never considered this possibility because the only trans women who exist are white of course you see which is exactly why the comparison is definitely not a consequence of white trans discourse stealing everything it can from black people just like the rest of white settler culture in the settler colony called the united states of america

I don’t see why it’s stealing to compare reactionary behaviour across similar occurrences in different identity groups. Nobody is trying to steal from you or undermine anything historical, we’re trying to better understand current behaviour and that happens to be easiest to do when comparing to what people already know.

I’m open to taking this criticism from you but I need to understand specifically what’s negative about it because I really do not understand. Nobody would be mad at your struggle if it found a way to use “egg” or other trans terminology comparatively in another struggle. In fact I think I’ve used egg for things outside of trans struggle before.

Also I’m not american, which may be why I’m not understanding it very well.

Corpo trans people (as in those who are HR) or really any trans person who displays reactionary behavior (ie racism etc) really infuriate me.

Not to suggest I feel entitled to what trans people do with their own lives but it’s akin to just recoiling at pathetic behavior.

My previous employer, who shitcanned me, had an hr person who was ftm and I swear this motherfucker existed in some alternate Nazi dimension, talking about how great his SAT scores were, bragging about being employed because he studied art while others who studied some other humanities major were homeless.

It’s cause I work in kitchens and everyone is associate with is poor. But I have never once met a trans person with bad politics. While I know this is just cause of the company I keep and the job I have, it still shocks me to see it. I f i had to work in an office environment my obvious and open contempt for everyone around me would have me fired within a week. I wouldn’t last a half hour around such loathsome, tedious, self centered, BORING motherfuckers. My job is hard and doesnt pay much, but there’s no bullshit like that, you can speak openly within the realm of how much you would chatting on the sidewalk, being direct is crucial to getting the job done and therefore being a straight shooter in non work conversation doesn’t surprise people. Plus I get to swear constantly and make culturally insensitive jokes about Italians, its an italian restaurant so ive got lots of ammo. Today I said Little Italy isnt a catchy name and they should have went with The Spaghetto, and that the head of Italian Parliament was known as the Prime Minestrone
