The same way Canada compares itself to America favourably, New Zealand compares themselves to Australia. Of course, this means that they are absolute dogshit when it comes to actually caring about indigenous rights, but they aren’t as bad as [literally the worst examples of settler colonialism] which means they are above reproach and immune to criticism.

Same thing with Edmund Hillary and Everest. People don’t know this, but Nepal is actually one of the flattest countries in the world, they just tilt it sideways for the tourists.

It’s interesting watching media reference to Korea from the 60s to the 80s, they very, very rarely do, but when they do, the north isn’t even mentioned and the south is full of depictions like how the west portrays the north today.

It’s kind of like how Saudi Arabia is seen by the west today, a “ally” that constantly commits human rights violations, but those are just “unfortunately how things are” rather than how they react when that stuff happens in Bad Guy Country.

It has been interesting watching the narrative around the DPRK shift from “They use outdated technology from the 80s because they are so backwards and in need of Freedom” to “They have advanced technology, sometimes even beyond what the west has, but they only ever use it exclusively for pointlessly evil things.”

It’s less about making it so it can’t be voted in, and more so they have excuse to wiretap suspected communist’s phones and break up suspected communist meanings and arrest people for vague claims of “being communist”

You know, all the stuff they accuse the communist countries of doing all the time, but it’s ok when they do it!
