I heard 15 sucks
Final fantasy 6 is the best one because I played it as a child. Final fantasy 1 is the worst one because I never played it and it seems really basic.
7 is also the worst because it sucks up all the oxygen in the room and prevents square from ever doing anything else. Can’t wait for the remakes remake in ten years when final fantasy 17 doesn’t sell like the remake trilogy did.
they could make a new game about a different bisexual ecoterrorist polycule but they won’t
Why do they deny us our ecoterrorist polycules?
Best: 6. It was the peak of the 2D sprite era RPGs. Interesting characters, interesting plot, great game mechanics, plenty of fun side quests, satisfying ending.
Worst: 8. Baffling confusing nonsensical plot, an irritating time-sink magic-power grinding mechanism, and I didn’t care if any of the characters (playable or NPC) lived or died.
I have no idea about post-8 games, never played them.
The best is always the latest and the worst are all the previous ones because obviously they’re not very Final.
Will 16 be the Final Final???
They wouldn’t just go on the Internet and tell lies, right?
The best one is the one you played during your formative years and have the most nostalgia for. The worst one depends on if you want to form your own opinion or just listen to youtube essayists. If it’s the essayists, then two is the worst because it different and different bad, or possibly eight because again, different therefore bad.
The real answer? The terrible gatcha mobile game auto battler that was one the most heavily pay to win mobile games ever made.
You’re right, I really love FF6 : formative years, didnt quite read perfectly english then, too - so kind of “exotic”.
The soundtrack hits different, I fantasized being that loner hero in the schoolyard, with the track of the open world playing in my mind.
Also I really love the artwork in the booklet (or was it?) from Yoshitaka Amano, it has a light and flowy touch to it. Ive recently learned that he worked on Vampire Hunter D, which was a show I shared watching with my older sister!
But like you said, nostalgia.
My favorite is 7 though and I didn’t get to play that until I was in my late 20s
Final Fantasy II defense force, on the scene!!

FF 2 is OK, but it is what ended up giving us the Saga series so I can never hate on it.
Oh yeah, All The Bravest, I forgot all about that.
There was also that FFVII mobile battle royale that shut down pretty quickly.
If you open this up to mobile games it’s practically cheating tho…
Time to annoy the final fantasy fans.
I like 13, and lightning returns. 13-2 is extremely boring filler content where the story takes place in a 5 minute window in the ending cutscene of 13. 13 is how imagined my favourite movie, spirits within, as a video game because its still the best looking corridor ever put to the ps360 generation and i legit like the story and characters. Lightning returns continues to be a fever dream, it had a vibe i cant describe at all.
15 is my favourite gay coded boyband romp and I just love their outfits and car.
16 i love me some CLOIV REDFEEELD. Its what an E3 trailer from 15 years ago would be if it was a video game.
11 and 14 are great but thats cos i love MMOs.
Why do i love these ones? Because deep down i really dont like final fantasy. I bounced off 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 i think 10 was the first one I played and i almost died of boredom. I’ve played them all to completion so nobody can convince me that it gets good at hour 750. But I also say this is evidence that square also seems to hate final fantasy by shifting the games to something else entirely

At a certain point, you’re just hurting yourself lol. Life is too short to force yourself to play so many games you don’t like. It’s why I still haven’t played all the Dark Souls games despite them being super popular, either. Maybe one day I will try again, but it won’t be forcing myself through so many if I know I don’t like them. I’ll try one and give it a try and see if it clicks more, and if it doesn’t, meh.
But I give you bonus points for liking the ones nobody else does. I’m sure the devs who worked hard on them appreciate it.
You would be right but im a real sicko and play/watch things I don’t like because I don’t like them. I have banks of essays I keep to myself on games, movies and shows that hurt my brain I get a weird kick out of it. My real hobby is complaining about everything and liking the things nobody else likes, for example Two Worlds which is definitively the best RPG ever made and witcher 3 is the worst. I will not elaborate.

Two Worlds and it’s sequel are fun games. I completed both lol. Also played Sacred 2 with the best music tie in.
its still the best looking corridor ever put to the ps360 generation
I think it was just a case of bad timing, everything was going open world or semi open world, and FF12 was very open, so people didn’t like that this one was extremely linear, had it come out a few years earlier or a few years later once people started getting fatigued by big empty open worlds, it probably would’ve been much more well received.
IIRC the reason it got panned was because it was like running a long corridor, lack of towns and shops and overworld map. You had to play for over half the game before it opened up.
13 is the “dress-up game” right? always wanted to play that one. Killer soundtrack too!
X-2 is great. Don’t remember too much about the story except the ending, but the combat system was so fun.
Lightning returns is the dress up lightning game. 13 is the one where everyone was confused because the story was needlessly opaque using silly words for things but actually the story was quite simple. Also the game was one single straight line with no exaggeration at all.
Soundtrack is superb my favourite in the whole franchise

13 was the 22-hour narrow corridor simulator with occasional combat breaks where you had to shift your paradigms to synergize with the thought leaders
have you tried Dissidia? might swing too far in the “not really final fantasy” direction but that’s the whole reason i liked it so

I think Lightning could be good tbh.
5 followed by 3/2 then 7, 1, 8/9, 12, 6,10,12,13 and the rest (I stopped at 15)
I prefer the classics. I also play the original release no re-release as they change the calculations every re-release.
Actually the goated answer because 5 has the BEST job system out of all of the games, except maybe 12 (i don’t like non-Zodiac versions of 12 locking you into a job)
Tactics Advance has the best job system. Other aspects are lacking but the job system is great
(Dare I wade into this) So are the skills you buy for units in FFTA categorised into react/support/etc or are there just a set amount of slots for them or what? Skills attached to equipment could be neat. I am curious bc I just finished FFT.
Here is a 45 minute video going into really deep detail on how it works, but the basics are explained within the first 10.
I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:
You dont buy skills, you buy equipment like weapons and armor etc and that equipment comes attached with different abilities, sometimes the same ability can be learned by different jobs (like there is a cerain robe that grants/teaches auto regen to any magic class) from the same item and sometimes it has different abilities for different jobs, like the flame rod as i recall teaches fire to a black mage and haste to a time mage.
So say youre a white mage and also lesrned some time magic and black magic. Those are active skills, so you would have white magic by default as a white mage and then could pick to either have access to the time magic or black magic that you’ve mastered. Then there are reactive skills like reflex which makes standard attacks miss but offensive abilities still work, auto regen where when you get hit for the first time and spell activates that restores a little health each turn, stuff like that and you can pick one skill out of the ones you know regardless of what class your in, same goes for your passive skills (called support abulites in game) slot which is stuff like the classic doublesword grom ninja allowing you to hold a weapon in both hands and hit twice, doublehand is another where you can hold a two handed wespon with one and equip a shield or whatever in the other hand, or cut mp where my cost is cut in half, stuff like that.
For your active skills which are things like spells etc you get the full list of whatever you’ve mastered for the class you’re in and the class you’ve chosen for your second slot.
Okay so maybe reductive but this sounds like it’s mostly just the FFT job system but skills are taught by grinding with items instead of grinding for JP?
Sorta kinda. I linked this video to someone else who has been asking. Its a good game and made to be picked up and put down easily cause this gba, its a fun little bit each day kinds game.
Very detailed video about the job system but the first bit explains the basics and then goes into how you can do absolutely wack shit
I’m watching it rn, the ellery one. No Training mode or Autobattle commands in this game, is there?
Some of this sounds important to keep in mind but a lot of it sounds like sweatlord minmaxing. I do think having different species of critters with access to different classes is a better system than gender segregated classes.

Tactics games aren’t mainline final fantasy tho (๑>•̀๑)
Plus Tactics Ogre or X-COM are better tactics games, the only thing FF tactics (PSX) has is pretty graphics. The maps and teams are too small. It has it’s fans, I’m not one of them. (づ ̄ ³ ̄)づ
click
I’m only half serious ⌓‿⌓
All I said was ffta has a the best job system
Oh yeah I know I read what you said, I haven’t played the handheld games yet. I will give them a go at some stage to see if they click with me. I would hope they are an improvement over the PlayStation game but I am hesitant. I’ve yet to play Knight of Lodis too tbf. I do have hot takes but like I know the games are liked which is valid. I have particular tastes and I enjoy difficult games (been described as a masochist) but I do like hearing why people like games I don’t particularly gel well with.
What do you like about the job system and have you anything else to “sell” me on the games? ૮ • ﻌ - ა
It’s the only gba game I still have my original cartridge of from when I was a kid and bought it a few weeks after launch. My original file has 500 hours played on it according to the in game counter. I’ve played it from a new file 4 other times. The story isnt great, it’s enough but dont expect anything close to fft, its more Saturday morning cartoon vibes. This is fine cause there is like…SOOOOOO many side missions. The main game is maybe a quarter of the full game, possibly less. The party building/leveling system is my favorite out of any rpg ive played. Experience is split into exp for your stats and AP for learning abilities, the abilities are attached to equipment which you need to be using to have the ability and then when you reach enough AP it’s yours. There are dispatch missions you can send party members on where they wont be there for a set number of days or battles and those grant AP but not EXP, this is how you can get silly with it. You have two main ability slots. One for the class youre using and one from any other class you have gained abilities in. So for example, if you want a fighter with white magic but dont wanna sacrifice hitting hard by leveling as a white mage, you can send em on dispatch to learn the spells, maybe get a couple levels in the class to get your mp up to snuff and then switch back to fighter for most of your stat leveling. Your party can be up to 30 people although you only use 8 or so in battle at a time, so the customization potential is off the charts. In my last playthrough I made the main character a fighter with white magic who had doublesword from the ninja class and a standard physical attacks miss me every time ability from the archer class (there also passive and reactive abilities and you can pick just one but once again, from any class you’ve mastered the ability from. I had a split summoner/assassin who took a brief stint in red magic to learn doublecast. Once you get the hang of how the system works it’s just really fun to work on your team. It’s a super easy game and I kinda wish there was some tougher challenges for when your party is nearly maxed out, but there are 300 quests, a system of battling other parties for control of the world map, capturing and raising monsters if you’ve got a beast master and it used to have cool link cable co-op missions as well. The battle system is also WAY better than FFT, you can cast a spell on the turn you select it for example
My original file has 500 hours
That’s a lot of hours, I usually back mine up from emulators or my handhelds at this point. I think I have close to 200-250 hours between recent Pokemon gen 1 and 2 romhacks.
The abilities from equipment sounds interesting. I found the classes in FFT kind of lacking in so far as a lot of the classes were watered down from previous games so a few of them felt redundant, so the customisation and tweaking of building the class sounds like an improvement. A lot of the defaults are enough to beat FFT which wasn’t really a challenge.
It’s a super easy game and I kinda wish there was some tougher challenges
I know there’s a big community for these games which have put out a load of hacks for rebalancing and such. Depends on if you feel you want to play romhacks.
I still have yet to play TA or Ogre. I do like Tactics’ job system though and that’s actually what I’ve been replaying recently on the Switch (I should post some screenshots I forgot how good the early class-war plot was with the Corpse Brigade, Wiegraf my beloved), but don’t consider them mainline!
TA has a bit of a different job system than tactics. Skills have their own exp and are attached to equipment, do enough stuff and you can use the ability. So you can gain skills in a class without leveling stats in it
7 and 9 are my favourites. 7 remains the most relevant today because the story is marxist. People will claim it’s because it was just the first 3d one but they’re wrong.
I enjoyed 10-2 as well. 10 is my least favourite. I didn’t touch 12. We don’t talk about 13. I don’t like the new ones either but mainly because the main character’s feel so masculine it alienates me from the characters.
I have a soft spot for 4.
Aside from the MMOs, which I never played, 15 was the only one I didn’t finish, so that tracks.
4 is underrated
4 is Overated honestly lol it and 6 are usually cited over 7
Really? I didn’t know 4 was that popular
Yeah it’s usually between 4,6 and 7. Sometines 9 but from the dozens of videos I’ve watched and read reviews/takes online. The 13 games have their fans and the odd 15 enjoyer too. It varies a little with the newer games (˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶)
In my opinion?
10 is the best because it was the first one I remember buying for myself at Gamestop circa like 2004 & it really solidified my love for JRPGs (although it was not the first I ever played) because it was arguably the first 3D jrpg I played - I’m not counting Kingdom Hearts. Cast is great in both versions (even if the english dub is memed), story is great & doesn’t ever really drag, gameplay is great and has all the hallmarks of a good FF game (lots of side-quests/interesting enemies/good minigames/etc)
14 is the worst because, while parts of it are literal diamonds in the rough (Base Heavensward is genuinely the best expansion imo, way before the WoL gets so overpowered they’re basically a god, the Scions aren’t completely annoying, and it is the introduction of the two best characters in the series - a serious story about how holding onto anger and violence over the past can ultimately lead to destruction unless you channel that rage into making it so no one has to experience what you did. Ysayle and Estenien spend the entire base expansion struggling with this & reach the conclusion that “maybe I’m doing this wrong” in separate but important ways. I’m still mad about Ysayle’s ending but I’ve given up on FFXIV ever having like, a really well written female primary character. Alisaie & Krile lovers don’t comment on this, I don’t hate either but…Y’shtola fans please do some soul searching…) the rest is just
Yes I probably will re-sub for Evercold & weep and moan the entire time because I dropped it in 7.1 and have to get through the rest of whatever Dawntrail is about.I guess my real gripe with 14 really is that it is more of a MMO than FF11 was in a way. People love to say “14 respects your time!” and sure, it does in the sense that you won’t ever really ‘miss’ anything if you choose to take a significant break, but this design perspective caters to the super casual who are less interested in actually playing the game itself & more interested in roleplaying/treating the game like a FF version of Second Life. I’ve played (on and off) since Stormblood and have never been an ultimate raider or anything, but I got really frustrated in Dawntrail (after coming back specifically for Endwalker after taking a break post-Shadowbringers) because it seems like they’ve spent the last 2 expansions just ‘streamlining’ things for the sake of making sure the base game/fights have no actual challenge to them & so people don’t actually have to learn how to play a class. Healers still using Cure 1 40 levels after they unlocked Cure 2, Ninjas using their AOE on single mobs, tanks pulling 2 enemies at one time in a dungeon instead of the entire group because they don’t know they’re supposed to be using their damage mitigation skills. All fine in like, the base difficulties but god forbid you try to tell a healer “hey you should use Cure 2” in an Level 90 Extreme Trial because they’ll hit you with the ‘you don’t pay my sub’. I hate that bald streamer fuck but he really did hit the nail on the head when he made that clip talking about how FFXIV’s combat/difficulty is really just “can you avoid the bright orange circles that appear on the screen??”
Also the gooners of FFXIV really put me off because I could not escape them. I like playing dwarves/gnomes/etc in MMOs. Small characters are funny to me. So my sole FFXIV character for over a decade has been a lalafell. I knew going into the game that they were seen as children by the playerbase at large, so I tried my hardest to make him look like an old man and even gave him an old man name. My mistake because it resulted in constant PMs from weirdos like “so adorable!! you should come to this house plot and join our stripclub!!” - no, I’m not interested in roleplaying as a stripper in a child-sized body I know what you’re looking for!!!
All in all, makes me sad because I did meet a ton of nice people on FFXIV who were just casuals; I don’t mind that! 95% of the FC I was in were players who would be online for 8 hours daily just sitting in a public area with their in-game boyfriend/girlfriend whispering to eachother - whatever floats your boat I guess! But inevitably this always leads to drama. I remember getting so frustrated because I really wanted to do The Epic of Alexander ultimate and the FC had enough people who’d done it successfully that I spent like 2 weeks trying to plan a group around it; I remember logging in day of and having the FC leader tell me “Can we reschedule?? There’s a club party going on that I really want to go to & I already told everyone else that we’d reschedule” – mind you a ‘club party’ is a bunch of people just doing /beesknees in a housing instance and maybe roleplaying or, more likely, ERPing. I got so mad because when I said “can’t you do that after? It shouldn’t take us more than like an hour or two to clear the raid since there’s only 2 people who haven’t done it” they just hit me with a “um…no; you can use party finder though if you want :D”

runner up for worst game is 16 if we’re talking purely single-player. Story was alright (if you ignore the whole Ultima plot…would have been a 10/10 story if it’d just stuck to the whole war of Valisthea with the eikons and mothercrystals & the way bearers were treated), gameplay was shit and felt like all the worst parts of 14 melded into a single player experience. SOMEONE FIRE NAOKI YOSHIDA FROM CBU3 PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.
I love how you hate some of my favorite Final Fantasies
Me saying " people are allowed to dislike the things I love" like a mantra while I cry.

But in seriousness I don’t like being called out lol. Me and my wife have a blog where we put up our character stories that we write and she is very good at the modding pictures. Honestly surprised she hasn’t forced herself to learn blender yet.
As far as the house parties stuff. Yeah I avoid that stuff though to my understanding most venues are very strickly no Lala for that shit or they kick you. So its always pretty big red flag if they do that shit. Run to the fucking hills.
On the positive side, there is some awesome RP venues. Like Someone made their house a restaurant where they basically do RP cooking stuff for themselves while you engage with whatever scene you are doing. Then there are the Museums. Like holy shit. We went to a FC who’s entire thing was being a Muesem. Every room in the house was a region dedicated to fishing and I think they were working on something for plants?
I can’t speak to the raiding cause I haven’t tried to be any type of serious since SB. Mostly because I raided in WoW from like Wrath, to first bit of Legion. And you want to talk about dude bro gamer culture. I’ve been burned out for years.
I did farm for the birds before SB came out and holy shit got to 95 totems for Equilibrium asshole. Voice lines are in my head as much as any wow fucker.
“Prepare yourself the bells have tolled. Shelter your weak, your young and your old. Each of you shall pay the final sum. CRY for mercy! The reckoning has come! MUHHAHAHA!” if I forget this, probably time to take me to a home.
As far as 16. I actually enjoyed the campness of the ff14 stuff. (Shocking I know). But I found myself enjoying the combat. Though it did get repetitive at times. My biggest issue is the lack of world map. Like give me a fucking world to EXPLORE dammit! And I still would prefer it to be turn based. I miss my then base final fantasy. Now I got to go elsewhere for people to do neat stuff with it like expedition 33.
I also enjoyed the story despite some of it’s weak points because I was glad to see it return to form with a focus on hope in the face of adversary and “no gods, no master” which was pointed out to me is the actual thing that ties Final Fantasy together.
However big caveot is that I pirated it. So that probably helps me a LOT for my opinion. I try to give big corporations as little of my money anymore. And a interesting side effect means I enjoy the games more.
Still not touching 15 though. I live in a age where I don’t have to walk through cis man mid life crisis stories anymore. And I am going to relish in that. (Someone out there, 15 is very important to them and they are also going to give me the

(Disclaimer I legitimately think its fine you like something different and mostly joking on my autistic first gut reactions everything else is me just shooting the shit)
Still not touching 15 though. I live in a age where I don’t have to walk through cis man mid life crisis stories anymore
15 is NOT A MALE MID-LIFE CRISIS STORY IT’S A STORY ABOUT 4 YOUNG MEN IN A CLOSED POLYCULE, WHO ARE DEEPLY IN LOVE WITH EACHOTHER, GOING ON ONE LAST ROAD TRIP TO GET THEIR GAY OUT BEFORE THEIR ONLY TOP GETS MARRIED.And yeah, I didn’t mean to denigrate the roleplay scene of 14 in general; I know there are cool housing instances and people - my lala is actually named after a politician so historically whenever someone ran up to me trying to roleplay in a non weird way I’d play along for a bit!
Me and my wife have a blog where we put up our character stories that we write and she is very good at the modding pictures.
This is like the ideal kind of roleplay in FF14 to me. Or even people who theme their FC around some sort of joke or style. All great. I was mainly shitting on the players who just mod the everliving fuck out of their characters so they are even more sexualized than they are in the base game (because let’s be honest, 4/5 of the playable races are extremely sexualized). At the end of the day, thankfully I don’t have to see any of it outside of social media with the nuking of Mare and whatnot - but it just rubs me the wrong way that a large portion of the playerbase is treating the game like it is interactive porn!!!
I miss mount farming old content tbh. I still need to finish the dragons & do the wings but wings are all the Dawntrail trials

Oh yeah I figured you didn’t mean all RP. Just figured I’d mentioned some of the cooler ones if you hadn’t been lucky to find stuff. It can be Russian Roulette sometimes and some FC peeps I knew had some weird horror stories to the point where I have no idea how they find themselves in those situations sometimes.
It can be hard to find ground RPers at times because of mods and stuff but I run into this problem when I DM too. So figure its more issue of western style protagonist syndrome then anything. Not to mention the ironic pilled individuals.
But you make the most at what you can find.
But yeah I truly didn’t take any offense or anything like that. It just struck me as hilarious how your worst is some of my favs like back to back. Its amazing how that works sometimes.
I nearly died in my chair playing 16 when I went to go turn in a fetch quest and the button prompts to hand over items were the EXACT SAME as they are in 14. YoshiP why are you like this
Hating the egg man is problematic ngl
the super casual who are less interested in actually playing the game itself & more interested in roleplaying/treating the game like a FF version of Second Life
mind you a ‘club party’ is a bunch of people just doing /beesknees in a housing instance and maybe roleplaying or, more likely, ERPing.
I actually didn’t know people played XIV for any other reason than this, incredibly funny to me. Your struggle, abc.
I really want to like 14 but agree 100% with all your complaints. Really telling that one of the things they’ve worked super hard to add recently is bots to almost all the main dungeons and trials so you don’t have to engage with the player base that will scream the instant you suggest they learn basic mechanics. You’re right, I’m sorry, let’s spend another 20 minutes dying to a single trash mob because reading a tool tip is asking too much.
Also, I don’t play Lalafell but I feel for you, way too many gooners running around making people feel uncomfortable. Could really use a Limsa Volcel Vanguard or something.
Fuck you FFXIV and I’ll be back for Evercold
Really telling that one of the things they’ve worked super hard to add recently is bots to almost all the main dungeons and trials so you don’t have to engage with the player base that will scream the instant you suggest they learn basic mechanics.
Don’t worry the 1 button combos and perpetual job identity/playstyle simplification will solve everything
Sorry to anyone who liked Viper on release, or 5.0 Astrologian, or pre-7.0 BLM.I’ve never been a 2-minute meta lover; I have always thought it hampers class design/playability. But the fact that the team seemed to say “we need to move away from the 2 minute meta, we can do this by making every job have a 1 button combo and getting rid of any unique-to-a-class playstyle” has frustrated me since they started implementing them. PVP has a 1 button combo? Fine; it’s pvp and a large chunk of the playerbase cheats in matches anyways so it doesn’t matter beyond doing your dailies and maybe the season rewards for CC if you care about them. Regular content/trials are given very telegraphed AoEs and no longer have penalties for fucking up? Fine - that’s been FFXIV’s bag since basically Shadowbringers because so many players revile content like Mhach and Orbonne.
But when the last 3 expansions have basically gutted every ‘complex’ job because the majority of the playerbase can’t read skill tooltips & just ignore the job quests that teach you how to use specific skills/play the job in general? Enough. It’s crazy to me that like, BLU is a way more rewarding job to play than PLD or AST, if only because BLU requires you to seek out content to learn spells and you can fill your hotbar with a bunch of unique skills that have their own drawbacks/benefits (even if once you unlock Moon Flute/Tingle/JKick you’ll probably just use those for most things). And you can’t even use BLU in regular content so it’s a moot point besides having fun.
Could really use a Limsa Volcel Vanguard or something.
What’s crazy is I’ve always been stationed in Gridania (even if they are the racist elves) specifically because I hate Limsa’s idle population, and I still constantly got people running up to me while I was doing GC turn-ins asking me to join their strip club or come erp with them. I don’t even hate them though. The “you need to download Mare so my character appears as a big breasted bunny-girl that has an excessive amount of cosmetic surgery on your screen too!!!” gooners were actually my most hated. There was one in my FC for like 3 months, who I finally was like “either he gets kicked or I leave” to the leader after he put a picture of 8 of us, who were doing one of the newest extremes at the time & just hanging out, naked in the discord. He had one of the Dalamud/Mare mods that would just make everyone nude. It was so egregious to me because 3/8 of the people in the party were lalafells and he was always up our asses (metaphorically) even though none of us really were buddies with him & when he posted that image I was like “oh my god he’s been fucking gooning to us the entire time because we look like naked children”. FC Leader did not understand it at first and I raised so much hell about it that they did finally boot him but that caused him to start stalking us, which is very funny to do in a MMO but made me realize “a lot of FFXIV players are just unhinged/gross and the game itself kinda encourages it with ‘fashion’ being the end-game and their lax stance on mods/plugins”
I’ll be back for Evercold ofc but it’s just one of those things that makes me cringe whenever I’m playing for awhile and long-time players who do participate in the general ERP scene (although all of them are fairly normal when it comes to that stuff and don’t prey on lalafells) in my FC/Linkshells are like “where have you been!?!” because at the end of the day, I’m playing FFXIV because I like the final fantasy setting - I’m not playing FFXIV because I think the Miqo’te or Roegadyn are hot.Makes me miss FFXI because it was never really like that, although I was way younger during its heyday when I played & might have just overlooked that side of the playerbase in favor of wasting my life on Kirin and Tiamat fights.
tanks pulling 2 enemies at one time in a dungeon instead of the entire group because they don’t know they’re supposed to be using their damage mitigation skills.
ahhhh, that takes me back to early heavensward :D
everyone wanted to play the new edgy boi tank class without having the first idea about tanking
the hills were alive with the sound of “WHY AREN’T YOU IN GRIT?!?”
fun times

I both love and hate Final Fantasy 8.
On the one hand: the Dollet attack sequence, the Garden Battle sequence, the soundtrack, Triple Triad, breaking the game with Triple Triad, Laguna being a lovable dork, the combined aesthetic of early 20th century Europe and high-tech, GFs erasing memories as a metaphor for war robbing children of their childhood, the way Edea’s magic feels like a violation of reality and establishes why sorceresses are feared, trains, Selphie, and Selphie getting excited at the prospect of blowing up a train with a rocket launcher.
On the other hand: Triple Triad’s Random rule, obnoxious scavenger hunts to upgrade your weapons, the orphanage plot twist, running in circles around Balamb to find Raijin, the momentum-killing sewer section in Deling, the sheer tedium of drawing 100 of each spell for each party member for the things you can’t card mod, the Adel fight stonewalling me as a kid because I relied entirely on GF spam.
7 is the best because of ecoterrorism and also the worst because of the fanbase
i will also accept that the MMOs are the worst because MMOs are bad.
Best? Depends on who you ask. 10,9,16, story of 14 are some of my favs though.
Worst? Boy trip FF midlife crisis edition trying to do a worst style Neir story telling. Aka 15. (The real answer is it probably just depends. But fucking hell I hate that game.)
Edit: lol I didn’t see the body text before I posted.
The best is Final Fantasy X-2.5 ~Eien no Daishō~, because one of the main plot points is a protagonist tragically dying by mistaking a bomb for a football.
The worst is every Final Fantasy where this does not happen, which I think is all of the others (except maybe Kingdom Hearts??)
A falling rock kills goofy in Kingdom Hearts, does that count?
Depends on whether he went “A-hyuck, watch me score this sweet header! GAWRSH” as it happened
I will only comment on what I played, imo Tactics is the best (with VII being a close second) while I is pretty weak and barebones. Not really that much of a hot take, seeing as I is the first and the winning formula hadn’t been established yet. But it’s wild how the best game in the franchise (again imo) is a spin off title.
Mainline? Best is 7 (but god I love 9), it’s the most popular for a reason. Sorry 6 fans. Worst is 15. Important parts of the story take place in media beyond the game itself like movies and books. Huge respect for the mobile port though.
Outside of that? Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as King is so fun, but was WiiWare exclusive so maybe 5 people played it. Tied with that in my kid brain is FFCC The Crystal Bearers, but it’s almost certainly worse than I remember. Dissidia Duodeciem also slaps. Can’t pick my fav.
The most recent Chocobo Racers that was packed with microtransactions was fucking awful, and of course all the mobile spinoffs suck. Happy to see them remade as single player games.
My Life As a King is GOATed, absolutely awesome game. Played through it like 7 times since its release.
Hell yeah! There really isn’t another game like it. Kinda surprised an indie dev hasn’t stepped in and made a spiritual successor of some kind.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as King

That game was such an excellent balance of city builder and management sim, and I played the hell out of it. No Man’s Sky’s freighter/frigate system is kind of similar, I guess, but it’s just not the saaaaaaaame
I’m so sad that nothing has ever scratched the same itch, but at least it’s fairly easy to get running these days! Even if it isn’t the same I’ll have to check out No Man’s Sky, been meaning to try it for a while anyway
NMS is such a kitchen sink mess of mechanics. I love that game, but it gets overwhelming at times. My advice is to try an expedition the next time that they have one going, especially if it’s a redux version of an earlier one. You get free stuff (ships, cosmetics, sometimes multi-tools) for doing basic objectives, and you can always flip over to the regular campaign afterwards.
