@Pontifex: In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.
@Spectromachina: Pope, would you please shut the fuck up about matters you do not understand? You’re not an Ai influencer, no one elected you, and you have absolutely no weight in this debate and you’re being used as a mouthpiece to sway public opinion. how many local models do you run?
Community Note: The Pope is elected by cardinals in a Conclave which gathers in the Sistine Chapel.

Like, i also have no respect for the Catholic church but this is just funny
Shut the fuck up, how many local models do you run Mr. Pope!?‽could be a tagline“The Pope. How many datacenters has he?”

If i were Pope, there would be so many people getting hit with halberds for mouthing off to me
By the end of the week, Protestants are going to be running their own image generation model. They will call it Manger Diffusion, and it will be trained on the Veggie Tales DVD box set.
Why would you put that kind of evil on me?
I’m just a little Pope, just a funny little guy who wears a funny little hat and drives around in a funny little car
The phony pope can be identified by their high top sneakers and incredibly foul mouth
Yeah, that’s fuckin’ true
the fake pope has a low enough armor rating that his health bar is red when clicked
they use mp7s now
Yeah, but I would make them use the halberds
I feel like it would hurt worse than just riddling them with bullets
Make them use baseball bats, and call them your minions, henchmen, or goons
Come on, we need a pope who feels like as much of a villain as he is
Damn, I never had any beyond the MP3, glad to see music playback devices are still evolving
it plays more than 800 songs per minute
Flying dangerously close to a classic Terry Davis quote
Let him who has a datacenter among you be the first to cast a stone at her
I have a memory of getting in an argument with some woman on FB 15 years ago who asserted that because she had several hundred people on her friends list that made her opinion carry more weight that has this exact same energy.
I think this might be a universal experience for people of a certain age
That happened to me too! :pain:
Think she was firmly in my parents age bracket, I asked how many of those people would pick her up from the airport and she never replied.
no one elected you
Bigger men with literal armies have contested this over the centuries. Try crossing the alps with ten thousand men before trying to tell the pope what to do.
For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.
Releasing my experimental industrial death metal album on the Catholic Church’s record label to own the AI slop techbros
death and resurrection metal
This album walked so that Ministry could shamble
This album came out in 2003. You’re thinking of their other self titled album
Post-2003 Ministry is a shambling mess, so that still tracks
This is true. It was neat when Killing Joke reformed that they took influence from the bands they influenced.
I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:
Apparently AI execs have been literally lobbying the pope’s advisors to make them consider that AIs might be conscious.
They truly expected the pope to come out and say “Yeah, you know all that shit about God, and how there is only one of them, and how He alone created the universe, and created mankind in His image? We’re calling a mulligan on that one. It turns out every dork in a cubicle is actually a God, and you will be reunited with your dearly departed AI agents when you arrive in Heaven.”
In all their arrogance they thought that the Catholic Church - a thing which mints theological doctors - has insufficiently considered the ethical ramifications.
This is like the equivalent of me going to NASA to lecture them about paper airplanes.
This is like the equivalent of me going to NASA to lecture them about paper airplanes.
Except the people at nasa would probably really enjoy a day where that happens
Tbf I can see why they would expect that. A lot of pastors seem to fucking love AI, we just happen to have the Woke Pope 2.0 in power right now.
I think if they were smarter, they could have manipulated the Vatican the same way they have manipulated secular institutions throughout civil society. Corporations, governments, non-profit organizations, and volunteer projects have largely folded with few exceptions. They assumed the Catholic Church would be equally mesmerized and shortsighted. It is not hard to imagine a world where that is the case either, but it is really funny how poorly this attempt at lobbying has gone.
I think it is an interesting sociological phenomenon. The Catholic Church is obviously by no means a historically progressive institution, but at this moment it appears to have more sovereignty than relatively progressive institutions like constellation of liberal republics which were founded more or less specifically for the purpose of establishing “popular” sovereignty.
we just happen to have the Woke Pope 2.0 in power right now.
It’s going to suck when they elect anti woke pope who wants to be the new Charlemagne and revive the Holy roman empire

You’re not an Ai influencer
that’s too fucking funny. plus isn’t the pope one of the OG “influencers” in general? Probably.
critical support for the pope pissing off AI techbros.
You’re not an Ai influencer, no one elected you
I guess I missed the election where we made Sam Altman and Dario Amodei the presidents of AI.
being elected by a court of pedophiles is not a healthy basis for democratic legitimacy, not to give a negatively-hinged AI bro a grain of credit
being elected by a court of pedophiles is not a healthy basis for democratic legitimacy
Is this somehow different from how American presidents are selected?
And that’s why we should abolish the electoral college

Correct.
Oh yeah, you hate AI? How many local models do you run?
eleven, and they’re all in the torment nexus
Oh yeah, you hate slavery? How many slavelets do you own?
Oh you hate cake? How many carrot cakes have you eaten?
While I disagree with the Pope’s argument, it is hilarious that one of the shut up lines here is saying his stance doesn’t matter because he isn’t an “influencer”.
What about the pope’s argument do you disagree with? Is it that the machine is just a tool instead of the creator?
I agree with the conclusion that these LLMs are not conscious and do not have the potential to be conscious, but he’s reaching that conclusion from effectively the standpoint that they don’t have souls.
Ah, gotcha
in a way the pope was history’s biggest influencer for about 2000 years
I’d argue he is more of an influencer now, where before he had some measure of actual authority with some other governments for a few centuries.
Where is the Pope’s argument? Is there more in this chain of tweets?
I’m just talking about that first tweet, which cites “ontology” and makes generalizations about “machines” and so on.
Ah, ok. I’m curious if he has any non-theological arguments. Since he studied math, he’s in a better position than most to understand how LLMs work, eg stats machines.
He probably does, but I think it’s to be expected that the Pope mainly gives religious arguments.
Pope’s woke. Woke pope.
Techbro AI pedophile of today argues online with head priest of world’s oldest pedophile cult
The only reason AI maximalists aren’t Catholic already is that God is a little too old for their tastes.
But they’re hoping to resurrect God as an LLM!
Was hoping this would be a post where I get to dunk on the pope. Instead I’m giving him critical support against the tech bro enemies of life. Wtf
-Martin Luther
it amuses me to think there’s something out there with the belief that it’s more influential with its little tweet than the pope. this is all the script of a classic early to mid '10s social media flame war vying for subs retweets and virulence, and sure it’s exactly the right place for that but he’s the pope the revered head of a 2000 year old blood soaked juggernaut of a thing that is the catholic church. who does this twit think is going to be turned around from that by a pissant’s “trvth nvke”?
