I’ve been repeating this ever since the first 2026 Iran war when prices started to go up.
In Australia, the average commute in a petrol car costs $125 per week in petrol. To get an EV on a loan costs $85 in repayments per week and $10 of energy per week.
It is literally cheaper to give an ICE car away and take a loan to buy an EV than to continue to drive the ICE car.
This must be why we only have $45,000+ (60k AUD) EVs available here. Especially since they canceled the tax rebates because they were too woke.

As a EV driver, all the money you save on gas, save it for tires.
EVs are slightly heavier than visually similarly sized ICE vehicles. They also tend to have significantly higher torque from a stopped position, so those who like to mash the throttle with a heavier foot might experience much faster wear than they’re used to.
But drive it like normal and they should basically still last 90% as long as tires on a similarly specced ICE vehicle.
I went from a V8 mustang to the model 3 so they’re fairly close to the same weight class, model 3 still weights a bit more, and similar type of acceleration and course my driving is going to be the same in both. I went from 40 -45K miles between tire changes to 25K -30K between changes with similar Pirelli tires and a early “EV rated” tires, which were more expensive than even the Pirelli’s.
That’s been my experience with my EV so far but even with the tires, it’s still better than ICE for the most part.

I went with the “EV rated” tires because at that point I was willing to try something different after having two sets of tires that lasted less than 25K out of a 50K rated tire that lasted 15K longer on a similar car and surprisingly that “EV rated” tire did last a bit longer than the stock or Perilli’s even though the ride was not great.

Drive responsibly and don’t get fooled by marketing. Your EV is not more expensive on tires than a gas car or SUV.
Well good for you that your experience with replacing a gas car with a EV car doesn’t cost you more in tires. That’s not my experience and not the experience of others and yes I spend a more on tires than the ICE car, not SUV, car that I replaced with the same driving habits.
The experience of others is the same as mine. Tires are worn down by high acceleration and weight, not electricity. That means your driving habits and the weight of your vehicle. Now go drive safely.
No one was saying it’s about electricity causing tires to wear down faster there sherlock.

The V8 Mustang weighs between 3500lbs-4000lbs and the Tesla Model 3 weighs between 3500lbs-4000lbs.
You either got a heavier model, or you use that electric acceleration more, or you bought gimmicky tires that wear out faster based on some marketing that clearly fooled you into thinking that magically the driving force behind the wheels turning somehow changes the physics between a car, it’s tyres and the road.
You should be ashamed that you’re repeating this marketing crap on the internet, and you should go to a different tyre stop and take your wife with you out someone else who won’t fall for the marketing bullshit.
You were duped. Buy less gimmicky tires. It’s a car, and electricity isn’t magic even if it feels like it is.
The only thing that is still way too expensive is the insurance, which can get up to 1000€ for some vehicles.
Teslas, because they are unfixable.
Including gas vehicles and you know it. Premiums are based on statistics for car model, driver, location, and never on powertrain.
Here’s something looked up for one of the cars i was considering, Hyundai Ioniq 5 insurance cost is around 2000€ a year in Germany.
For a Hyundai Ioniq 1st gen in Canada, insurance is less than $2000 CAD. I don’t have to look it up. I’ve been paying between $1000 and $2000 CAD forever no matter what car I’ve had. I buy an EV i can afford, not the year’s model with more bells and whistles than i care to know about. And I don’t buy gasoline, which save me another $1000 or more.
No one steals EVs. Try insuring a Lexus SUV -2X everything else.
And did you factor in the cost of electricity?
depreciation? did you know that EV’s have a high depreciation, so if budget is a concern, you should be looking at second hand cars instead of of new ones? look it up!
Ioniq 5 in Canada: $68K. 3 years later, $28K. EVs are cheap used.

Hyundai Kona 2021 136 ps, 18900€ and insurance costs around a thousand euros, don’t even know what my electricity bill would look like, if you don’t think that’s a bit expensive then i envy your income.
My main point will always be that the insurance is too expensive.
And that’s 2025. I’m sure 2026 will be an even bigger difference.
The increase in petrol prices has a lot to do with war, and I think we should recognise the cost of this to people just like us in Ukraine and Iran.
More reason to do it. After all the second and third largest oil exporters have started wars, which then raise the oil price. That is a horrible incentive. However going to EVs weakens their global position.
They also provide a better user experience. Combined with a home charger, even the low end EVs are a better overall drive than a class up ICE vehicle. After owning EVs for a couple of years, I realized I can feel the engine when I ride in an ICE vehicle.
Love my EV. Most fun to drive car I’ve ever been in, bar none.
