I’m not sure if there’s a better title for this series, but basically I’ll be sharing unlicensed games that have political messaging relevant to the time the game was made. I was originally going to focus on console games but there’s exactly one old Windows game I wanted to include so whatever.
Terrifying 9.11 is a bootleg Game Boy Color game developed by Ruanxin (based out of Fuzhou, China) and released sometime 2002 (or possibly end of 2001). The game opens with a video montage of the planes hitting the twin towers while a chiptune rendition of Shir LaShalom plays. Pressing start brings up a little story crawl about 9/11 and the plan to send super soldiers into Afghanistan. Pressing start again opens a map screen and again into an exchange between Bush and Bin Laden. And then finally… Metal Slug. It’s a Metal Slug port. A surprisingly decent one!

A friend of mine made very good experiences with bamboo lab. Her smurfs look very decent, although they do have a bit of the “dusty” look that you get from borders between the printing layers.
If you’re going for a printer for infantry usually the better bet is resin printing instead of FDM ones like the bambu, it gets better detail by far, like straight up just can’t see the print lines unless you look incredible close. Usually people recommend Elegoo printers, especially since the last gen versions (Elegoo 4 currently) are basically on a permanent sale and the level of quality between a 4 and 5 is pretty close. FDM printers are however way better for vehicle printing, it’s both faster and cheaper, as well as simply easier.
(Obviously though if you just want minis on the table and don’t mind some muddiness to the detail FDM printers are perfectly fine, I’m just a bit neurotic about detail as someone who’s first and foremost a painter lol)
Yeah, they originally thought about getting a resin printer, but decided against it due to pricing and the fume issue that they could not have really resolved in their tiny appartment.
Based eldar enjoyer. Trans eldar schemes tend to look pretty good, if you haven’t already check out CerberusXT’s pride flag corsairs for a rough idea of how it could work out (although having said that his take on trans flag corsairs has nowhere near enough white for my taste)

Yeah those ones! I tend to find Cerberus’ stuff a little gaudy in its colour ratios, but he’s undeniably a great painter and his corsairs are imo his best pride themed minis by far.

They are becoming a standard piece of furniture in my circle, usually set up with fairy lights, plushies and with blankets both inside the cage and on top of the bars to make them cozier. By now i know three transfem communes that have one, and i think the main reason it isn’t four already is that the other commune is finishing the crawlspace / fox den in one of their bedrooms first.

Wednesday's post: Peru: Operación Chavín de Huántar
I don’t have any info about developers or origin or anything and it’s not really a playable game since it’s a 10 second cutscene that depicts MRTA guerillas running out of an ambulance and that’s it.
As for what the game title is referencing, there’s a natopedia page specifically for the operation but this one gives a little more context
In short, Operation Chavín de Huántar was a military operation carried out by the Peruvian Armed Forces in response to a hostage situation at the Japanese embassy’s residence. The hostages were being held by the Túpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA), a Marxist-Leninist group who demanded a reversal on neoliberal market reforms, the release of political prisons, and improvement in prison conditions in general. To retrieve the hostages, the military dug a tunnel under the building and attacked from underneath. The aftermath of the operation left 2 soldiers dead, 1 hostage dead (none were harmed until the military attacked), and all 14 MRTA members dead, of which 3 members were tortured before death and as many as 8 were summarily executed after surrendering.
Tuesday's post: Hong Kong 97
Hong Kong 97 is a bootleg Super Famicom “game” released in 1995. Designed by journalist Yoshihisa Kurosawa and developed by an anonymous Enix employee, this aggressively anti-communist and anti-Chinese shock project was made over the course of two days.
The game starts with a language select screen and a low bitrate 5 second clip of I Love Beijing Tiananmen that endlessly loops until you turn the game off. After language select, Mr. Business offers to sell your own original games and you get to keep a third of the profits. How generous! And then a message to dealers about stocking their game. Which yeah. The one thing this game doesn’t lack in is audacity.
Above are the cutscenes that play every time before the game begins. I blurred the third image as it contains a pile of corpses that I’m assuming are real.
There’s not much game to talk about; you move around and shoot PLA. You die on contact damage, if you’re shot, or, if you somehow live long enough, chomped on by the disembodied head of Deng Xiaoping. Oh and when you die, you get hit with a digitized photo of an actual corpse. So yeah, either try not to lose, or, better yet, don’t play the game at all and just look at the images I posted so you can think to yourself “what a terrible game I’m not playing”

Note: Deng Xiaoping was still alive in 1995 when this game was made, but he did end up dying in 1997. He was 90 in 1995 so that’s not like a really out-of-nowhere prediction but still a little weird.

Have to find enough money for gas to make it to therapy appointment (or they might charge me the $100 no show/cancelled within 24 hrs fee and cut off my meds lmao), stupid insurance stuff preventing me from getting the CPAP machine I’ve been waiting 7 months for, eating horrible food or not eating at all, stuck in my horrible horrible room with 30 year old carpet cuz it’s better than being around transphobic boomer family I’m stuck living with while they talk about fantastical invading immigrant hordes or stare at me “because they’re trying to think of ways to help me” or start yelling at me about finding a job (IM FUCKIGN TRYING)

On the bright side I am now pretty good at fixing things even without tools. I kindaaaa rebuilt my old CPAP’s motor and made it run again off of fucking Chapstick as lube and a ball bearing I salvaged out of a computer fan. I’d be using it now if I wasn’t concerned it would catch fire, probably while I was asleep and it was blowing air up my nose, if I ran it for more than 15 minutes cuz it got veryyyy veryy warm lol (not exactly factory spec). You should see the horrific solder job I did with a rusty GPU I found and a heat gun that let my boyfriend play The Finals at a good framerate until it broke again hehehe (some power filtering capacitors corroded to nothing but I bridged a previous stage to the output or smth that made the chip stable enough to run)
About to say fuck it and just get up and start grinding on the horrific online “job” (gig work) that pays less and less with each passing year

CW: Potentially dysphoria triggering discussion about voice(?)
My wife is trans. So are a couple of my close friends. One common thing they have amongst all of them is that they feel dysphoria surrounding their voice and how masculine it is. Only one of them has voice trained and sounds pretty damn fem, another isn’t training due to a severe speech impediment and self doubt surrounding that but wants to, the other desires to but has problems starting due to severe dysphoria.
Now, all three show some desire to, but to my understanding there is a fairly sizable subset of the transfem community that has no desire to attempt voice training at all. That always struck me as odd, but since it’s not part of an experience I can have, I can’t really judge in any way. So when it boils down to it, why not voice train? It seems like one of the foremost necessities to pass in a public setting. So why not go for it?

Voice training takes a lot of effort. I have a background in music and it’s about as much effort as learning how to play in a decent amateur band on a new instrument. That’s achievable for almost everybody, but it takes a bit of time and daily practice and a lot of people will find themselves not willing to out in that practice, especially when it involves regularly recording yourself and confronting your voice dysphoria, which just hurts many people severely. I get that some never get over that hurdle just because of that particular aspect.
The end results can be really impressive, but when i did voice training (with an actual speech therapist, it’s fortunately covered by healthcare in my country), i came to a point where i just had a major breakdown because i realized that the voice that was most achievable and most cis-passing for me was one that did not fit the kind of woman i am at all, that the trick for me was to just take all the pressure out of my voice and lower the volume and become totally hushed and meek and docile and i just broke down right there in my therapist’s office because … that’s not me. I’ve spent so much time thinking about where my place in this world is, i’ve found so much comfort in being this strong, butch, maternal woman that always stands up for her sisters and dares to make a fuss. Really took effort to arrive there when it’s so much harder for a trans girl to pull this off because so many of these traits lead to people calling my femininity into doubt. And that contradiction just was too much for me.
I do have fairly decent results, i absolutely sound different than before, but when my friends and me play some VN or RPG together in voice chat and voice act different characters together, i’m the one who can still switch back into a stereotypically male register without hurting her voice whereas several of my friends just can’t do that anymore without being in pain after a few minutes. I’m not a fan of doing the sudden voice drop party trick among cis people, but with my trans friends i’m really comfortable with playing around with that kind of androgyny. It’s part of the whole butch thing for me.

Oh yeah this is a really good point. But I’m like a high powered professional/subject matter expert in my day job and I already get less noticeably respect since transitioning, so having a commanding voice is useful (I’m so much more louder too than prior to transition when I would mumble dyphorically).

I have done some voice training and I did get some voice dysphoria…but also I kind of don’t care too much anymore.
I’m a 6’1 lesbian with undercut, piercings and tattoos etc. Like even if I passed as Cis (which weirdly is happening a bunch lately anyway) I’d code as a queer woman.
I also having listened to myself don’t think I sound as masc as I always felt, I used to get bullied for a vaguely effeminate voice (I have the fancier Australian accent due to wealthier/more educated parents).
I also don’t want to lose my Australian accent that foreign Dolls might find sexy if I ever do travel.

There are a decent amount of trans women who are fine with having a more masc voice. I know several cis women that could be mistaken for men with their voices and the idea that a voice must be of a certain quality to pass is giving in to cishet patriarchal ideas of feminity. Some trans women understand this and actively reject the idea of voice training. It can also be a useful tool to have a clocky voice as it can be effective at outing transphobes when you’re trying to date, thus saving time and keeping you safer.
For me, personally, I have no voice dysphoria but neither do I have voice euphoria. I am currently doing voice training because I want to attempt to get a voice that brings me joy to hear when it’s played back to me. However, that doesn’t mean I’m going for a “passing voice”. I’m just trying to alter some of the minor annoyances I have with my voice like how mumbly and nasal I can be.
Thank you for your response. This was genuinely helpful to understanding. I suppose finding one’s own joy in transitioning is undoubtedly the correct method to achieving one’s own goals, not one created by outside entities or expectations. Honestly, that’s a lesson we could all learn in life.

primarily, i more or less don’t care about passing. I’m generally fine with being read as a fuck ass gender gremlin because that’s what i am. my voice doesn’t give me dysphoria at all in a direct sense. it gets me misgendered sometimes but not consistently. so i just don’t care to change it that much. i do think it has already changed sort of subconsciously a fair bit but i haven’t done any regimented training. there is a part of it that’s out of spite because i hate the idea that i would have to change my voice to get consistently gendered correctly, when i don’t even dislike my voice. so it’s not a high priority for me at all. i don’t like getting misgendered but it just seems like too much work (and changing a part of myself i already personally am fine with) just to have that happen slightly less
