My dad’s hand me down pellet smoker grill is pretty cool but I’m kinda wishing i also had a propane grill or something, because every time i open the damn thing it drops 100F, so while it’s great keeping all the smoke outside my house, it still feels sub optimal for burgers. But i know it’s primarily a smoker, it just is what it is. Still, it got me wondering, what flavor of grillin does hexbear like most? Where’s our grillheads at

    • Let me just say, you’re probably vegan, but if you fuck with beef at all Ive found it really nice not having my smoke alarm go off every time i cook hamburgers. But that’s pretty much like the greasiest smokiest meat, most other stuff doesn’t fuck up the air too bad. Either way it’s still nice knowing all that shit stays outside

  • Weber 22" Kettle. I’ve smoked briskets and ribs and grilled any kind of meat and veg you’d want to grill for a lot of people. You need to manage where you’re putting things if you’re cooking a lot, but I have an aftermarket raised upper platform that adds more space. You just need to learn how to manage charcoal, just read up on proper grilling.

Their smaller charcoal grills are also very good and more affordable. I have a portable Weber propane grill for camping and aux cooking capacity that is really handy too.

If I had the money to get a second charcoal grill I’d get the Pit Barrel Cooker, look it up.

Whatever you get, just keep in mind the difference between direct and indirect heat, you need both at different times. Also, never use a wire brush to clean the grate. Get a brass scraper or something that doesn’t potentially wedge steel wire in your throat.

I usually prefer propane just for ease of use, but some actual charcoal or wood fire is a nice treat sometimes. I’m also curious about an induction setup with some grill plates, since that would be even more simple and easy potentially. I think some kind of induction system that you can use with a simple extension cord could be pretty ideal for grilling and frying outdoors.

    • Im thinking what might be ideal for me would be propane for fast, easy reliable heat, but then throw in one of those smokw tubes filled with wood pellets for added flavor? I thought about charcoal especially with the King of the Hill bit where they get addicted to it but it feels like it’d be worse than the pellet smoker in terms of keeping it at the right temp I want it

Lump charcoal all the way for me. So tasty so fun to light. Smells nice. Definitely difficult to keep it at an exact temperature in a classic wever style if you’re trying to be super precise. But I grill everything on it including simple baked goods sometimes. So you can do anything.

Pretty much stays real hot for some time. Lump especially. The biggest issue I had was learning curve to light it well.

It’ll cool down a bit if you restrict airflow but not quickly. But if you wanna grill a bunch it lasts a long time or you can put it out by closing of air all the way. Then use it later.

I got a Weber 18" charcoal grill last year and I like it. Thankfully I’m only cooking for 3-4 people usually so it’s perfect for that. Using a charcoal chimney and an electric air duster I can start it up pretty quickly too.

    • I mean that sounds good but i feel like it’d have to have all kinds of grease filters and whatnot that get gross. But that’s my dad’s preferred grill and the reason i have his pellet smoker now, actually. The man LOVES his ninja brand shit

        • Ah so it sounds like more a George foreman type, i think my dad’s thing is basically a grill convection oven, hence my assuming it has filters and shit needing cleaning

The pellet grill kinda sucks to clean but it could be worse. There’s the grills, and a big plate below that for stuff to drip onto, with grease running down a slot to a bucket with replaceable inserts

I just kinda scrape all that into the sink, throw the grills into the dishwasher, and so far ive totally ignored the drip channel. But it hasn’t gotten tooooo gross after maybe 7 uses, only like 1/4 inch of grease in the bucket

I like a flatiron for burgers. Propane grill for steaks, chops, pizzas, and veggies. Smokers for ribs and roasts. Currently only have a propane grill so I do burgers on a cast iron on the stove top.

i’m partial to the top element in a stove. bake your frozen pizza for a little less than it says and then hit it with the broiler for 90 seconds and get some maillard going on the toppings without over-cooking the crust

NGL, I’ve dug out a pit and used downed tree limbs with a refrigerator shelf grill on rocks. It’s fine if you’re able.
