He also supported Palestine on and before October 8 2023 at great personal cost, he has supported Iran through the entire conflict as well. He has been very supportive of China as a socialist project.

His takes on Russia Ukraine are mediocre or sometimes bad.

He offered preference to platner, although his support was pretty tepid and not really at the level of “endorsement” in the way this meme characterizes it. He called it “critical support” and now he needs to own that.

As usual I would like to offer a fair assessment of people and institutions rather than trying to dunk on a caricature of someone (or support a caricature either), but I guess that’s not as fun.

He still is misrepresenting the troop thing, so that aspect of the OP is totally deserved.

The aspect of the OP that I would contest is the implication that Hasan ever suggested Platner to be an “ideal leftist candidate”.

I think it would be beneficial to the conversation if you substantiate what youre saying because your comment is very nonspecific.

On the stream when this news first broke, there were tangents were chat was challenging him around if he’d have the same level of tolerance for an ex-IDF candidate, and he went on and on about how troop exploders are bad and it’s actually very important that we allow for repentant vets to be accepted as allies, tacitly ignoring that Platner is by no means “repentant” and wears his “service” as a badge of honor. This is how Hasan has been talking about Platner basically the whole time and it’s deeply annoying and disingenuous, and using his whining about “ultras” as a smokescreen for tailism.

The meme also depicts Bernie Sanders saying “heil Hitler”, which honestly is WAY more out of pocket than Hasan calling Platner an “ideal candidate”. You are way too invested in defending Hasan over something that is extremely obviously intended to be caricature rather than an accurate depiction.

I’m not exactly invested I’m interested in the discussion. Discussing Bernie on hexbear.net in 2026 is not interesting to me. Hasan is far more influential over left politics than Bernie right now so in order to keep the discussion interesting it needs to be accurate.

It’s a deliberately and obviously exaggerated meme that is rightfully criticising Hasan for being far too charitable to a neonazi who boasts about committing war crimes, not a “discussion”. Even leaving that aside, whether or not Hasan literally called him an “ideal” candidate is not the issue - promoting Platner at all was always both morally bankrupt and terrible tactics because it has always been clear that he is pure evil and something was bound to come out. Handwringing over Hasan actually maybe not really liking him all that much is pathetic apologia for a man who was pushing a literal Nazi as a candidate.

The context is that Hasan’s view is that “as long as he is Anti-israel, then it’s worth people to vote for, the priority is ending support for the genocide and the Israeli state on a political level, regardless of the personal background of the politician”. To my knowledge the rest of his commentary on Platner was analysis rather than outright support from a “harm reduction” perspective.

The “I dont care” is not exactly a literal “I dont care about the bad things he did, and im perfectly fine with him as a candidate” it is more “I have discussed this at length on stream in my political commentary, and some of you keep coming at me from my left about it but ‘I dont care [about the commentary from my left flank on this topic] anymore because I’ve had this discussion every day’”. He is addressing the chatter more than the topic in those clips, by my reading.

It doesn’t radically change the clip(s), but I don’t think it is an accurate representation of his position. I am not saying that I personally agree with his position either. Totally fine if you want to flame him with context. I also want to point out that this clip is not evidence of him requesting donations or campaigning with him as implied by the QT, but that isn’t directly relevant to our discussion.

It is very easy to clip hasan like this from the right or the left, so I would not weight it too heavily when you see it unless it is an unedited 30+ seconds.

Oh so if Hasan was repeatedly warned and was annoyed by those who were correct, that actually makes it better? Maybe Hasan needs to stop downplaying and ignoring and mocking the concerns from his left flank, and instead just listen to them and change his position. Then he would no longer have to keep addressing it all the time.

It’s like the Israel-Cool thing, it kept coming up for years until it was resolved because left-flank criticism kept coming and springing up. Then once they fixed the issue, it went away and never came up again. Hasan could have made Platner go away and never come up again on his stream as a tense subject by just condemning Democratic Party electoralism and wipe his hands of it entirely, but he cannot do that because he is fundamentally a clinger-on to the Democrats and Bernie-Stay-Behind-Apparatus which is a multi-million dollar political machine.

I’m just pointing out the context actually makes it worse. That this didn’t just come out of nowhere to surprise Hasan who wasn’t really paying attention to it. It was a hill he already planted his flag on and wanted to die on. He had already heard the correct positions, and rejected them as ultra.

Most of the people who made being for/against that emoji their entire personality ended up getting banned during that struggle session, I think most of us don’t really care too much about it now.

I’m just glad I was wrong about it potentially inviting anti-Semites in, that doesn’t seem to have happened. Though that could also be because being anti-Israel is much more acceptable now, so they don’t need to infiltrate a niche leftist forum to spread their bullshit.

kinda dressing them up, he regularly jerks it to ukrainian stochastic terror on people that used to be ukrainian in the donbas
