I just wish I could find more stylish ones. Or more biodegradable ones. Or both.

Yeah yeah, I’ll keep wearing them of course.

The thing that drives me crazy, and something I see way more often, is people riding at night with no lights. Terrible idea. Surround your shit with lights. Be a wheeling christmas tree if you have to, or it is only a matter of time before you will be hit.

Also rear-view mirrors are underrated, though I wish companies would manufacture ones that are more sturdy, less floppy.

How do you have them positioned? I have mirrors on my bike but they kinda useless, the slight movements I make on the handlebars+bumps in the road make them too hard to see. If I put them more at the center of my handlebars so they move less then I can’t see anything but my own bike.

I only have one on the left side and it’s mounted close to the outer end of the handlebar. Mine looks like this:

And it’s pretty sturdy. I’ve had flimsier mirrors before that had the same problems you describe.

And of course, get a new one and destroy that thing so no one else wears it thinking they’re safe. In a perfect world you wouldn’t have to say it but this is far from a perfect world.

Yeah, this is one thing that troubles me about biking. Even if the helmet never gets damaged, they are still effectively disposable and have something of a shelf life. Over time the little bubbles in the styrofoam pop, and the structural integrity degrades. So it’s a good idea to get a new one at least every few years.

They’re effectively an externality of motornormativity, if you think of them that way their sustainability cost pales in comparison to what they’re actually accommodating.

True, if I didn’t have to worry about motor vehicles, I’d probably be a lot more lax about wearing helmets, and their design would probably differ too.

Out of curiosity, how fast were you and was it a casual ride?

At my average (or even maximum speed), it’s hard to imagine that I would get to that level or damage on a helmet unless I’m run over by car.

I broke my wrist and fractured 2 ribs doing 15kph. Also wore a helmet, can’t remember how bad it looked, but had to be replaced.

It doesn’t need much to be unlucky.

Cycling without a helmet is truly one of those things that have literally no point. Like legit why would anyone do that. Its a 2 kilo thing you strap to your head that just instantly reduces the chance for you to die(i dont know the statistics for this but its like actually a huge reduction)

While I wear a helmet almost every time I bike, I will never push someone to wear one if they’re not convinced. Not cycling is almost always worse than not having a helmet. Cars are more dangerous, so is being sedentary.

The Netherlands, kingdom of cycling has almost no helmet use because the streets are safe and well designed.

By that same metric it would make sense to wear a helmet while walking, in case you slip and fall. Or While driving.

People in Netherlands commonly ride heavy, non aerodynamic bikes that would make the long, fast, hilly commutes we do in my city a fucking nightmare and at that slow speed you could see why someone would think not wearing a helmet was a chill move. I’ve, of course seen someone get their foot stuck in a pedal strap at a full stop, fall over and crack their head on a sidewalk, so there is no situation I would consider safe without a helmet on a bike.

As a member of Gen X, we didn’t wear helmets as kids (because the helmet usually cost more than the bike) and the habit stuck for a lot of people.

For me it’s a habit, 80s kid, I just don’t even think about it. I don’t ride very often either, only a couple times a year and usually on paths. But that doesn’t excuse it :(

I just hook it onto my bike lock in a way that someone would have to cut the strap to get it off. Bike thieves are generally not the type to wear or care about helmets and someone who wants a helmet that bad either wouldn’t cut it or they can fucking have it.

Two kilos? That’s heavier than a motorbike helmet.

A cheap default bike helmet has maybe 250g. That’s a 40 euro helmet.

I know enough about bike helmets to realize that, in that situation, your brain would be scattered all over the ground if you weren’t wearing one.

    Glad you’re OK

Over the last two years I fell twice. One was the only time I didn’t wear a helmet, thankfully my head didn’t hit but it could have and my neck muscles saved me (I know because they were sore the next day). The other fall my helmet hit the ground pretty strong but I didn’t have a thing thanks to it.

    helmets FTW.

i still remember when i was walking around my countryside in november on some very slippery ice. expectedly, i slipped and fell straight on my head. the only thing that saved me was that i was still in my airsoft uniform from a match earlier that day, and the helmet absorbed the impact.
