I have a friend who proudly claims to be a Christian Republican and that being gay is a sin and wrong. Then he will say in the same breath that he is gay and mean it. I have never seen something of the sort and it nearly shorts my wires. Idk what’s going on there but its the same vibe.

Christians are really, really good at seeing themselves at the good guys no matter the circumstances. They just kind of ignore that the only reason they’re the dominant religion in the world is that they murdered most of their enemies over two millennia.

I mean…according to the bible it IS a sin and wrong. But have you ever really read that thing? Technically were not allowed to go to the bathroom.

It’s not even originally in the Bible’s earliest translations to prohibit gay sex, originally it just condemned pedophilic sex and attraction and it was changed to target gay people instead of the church’s own clergy.

Turns out when you’re the only one reading the book, you can take “divine inspiration” and make a few tweaks to update the book to what magical sky daddy really meant. Same goes for those translating the books…

What do you mean “originally”? Did it get translated and the translation changed the meaning? Or is this the original language of the Bible had multiple versions?

If it’s the latter, I find that interesting as that is never discussed.

It’s a translation thing. If you look at the Greek and Hebrew texts, the verses in Leviticus are likely talking about pederasty and not homosexuality, given the phrasing and historical context.

That’s what I was thinking. Makes you wonder if there was intentionality in changing the words, or if it was something else. Or maybe it was god working though the translator.

100% intentional. The original kony Greek makes it clear it’s about men fucking little boys. If they wanted to write don’t have sex with other men they would have written that.

The Bible is rarely translated accurately afaik, and one of the big translations (the kjv) is basically entirely bullshit agenda pushing from a single specific king in Europe.

In the text about Sodom and Gomorra the way I understand it God is punishing them for wanting to rape the angel or whoever it was who’s sleeping there. Not for it being a gay act when men rape a man.

You also can’t mix fabrics, or do anything strenuous on Saturday. And you’re allowed to both own and beat your slaves so long as when you do so, they don’t die.

It’s insanely fucked up if you read the entire thing. Like, religious people are typically fine with me, I don’t tell them this stuff even if they do want to discuss it… But I read the Bible through a few times as a kid, and every since then I’ve had a healthy fear of Christians that both believe, and regularly read their Bible.

If they just go to church, that’s fine. Most churches cherry pick only the good verses (although let’s be real, very few Christians follow the good stuff anyway.)

The outright lie of “hate the sin, not the sinner,” has poisoned the minds of so many people.

I bet your friend lies to himself every day in an attempt to “live a straight lifestyle.” Literally trying to be someone he is not.

Growing up in an Evangelical church, and looking back, it was everywhere. Some of the nicest folks (usually even parents of friends) were SO OBVIOUSLY GAY. I think the one or two I’m thinking of even came out years after I left the church and I remember feeling so happy for them.

So one of my teachers for 5th and 6th grade had a wife and two daughters. Very Christian. It was only when we got a little older in junior high school that we realized holy shit Mr S is so gay. It was obvious in retrospect. He was a real powertripping asshole, and thinking back on it I wonder if that behavior came from not letting himself be his true self.

It’s such a shame what religion does to people. Yeah, it sucked to find out that there’s (probably) nothing else after this life. But on the other hand, I can’t even describe how much of a relief it was to no longer have to think about “sin” as a concept.
