This year has been the most grim TWOW years in living memory. GRRM is a year older, his blog has slowed down, he wrote about nothing except mourning his dead friends, no news, no update, not even anything worth shitposting, just slow acceptance that TWOW will never come out and ASOAIF will never be finished.

I assumed he wasn’t ever going to finish them a decade ago, and I’d only have a vague recollection of what was going on because there’s no way I’d ever reread the series. Even when I was a voracious reader 5 pages describing the food and everyone’s tables designs made my eyes roll up into my head

A new Tolkien letter was discovered a few months ago. Which means the LoTR universe was updated before ASoIAF. The Professor dunking on Martin from the grave!

As long as he never actually releases it everyone can live forever thinking that the show ending only sucked because the show fucked it up. Any ending he actually writes will make people mad because any single ending that exists is less perfect than the million perfect endings that exist in a million fan heads.

Wait, he has two novels planned for the series? I thought he only had one more book. Yeah, he 100% doesn’t have it in him to finish them both. At best, he has it in him to finish one more and since it’s not even the last book, there’s no real point to push for it to be finished since everything would be a cliffhanger anyway.

Like, I thought it was cope that he would finish one more book, but two? This is like Star Citizen level of copium.

He was supposed to finish the first by the time season 6 of the show aired. Then the show went on for a few more seasons and ended. Then years have gone by. Martin alleges he has both books written except for a few POV chapters from a few characters, but that’s probably a lie since he’s been saying that for the last decade.

Lmao it was 2016 for all of us. I’m pretty sure there was a big deadline in end of 2015 that he swore he would finish by, then when we got the new years post we gave up.

I distinctly remember this huge announcment, GRRM made a big big deal of it, he hyped it up for weeks, everybody was over the moon, it was finally happening, and then it was just a fundraiser for some wolf sanctuary in Arizona or something, which while cool was not exactly what people expected. And then this happened like three more times lol.

The liquidation of the Westerosi nobles in dragonfire is a necessary and historically progressive step towards centralised state power and the rise of the bourgeoisie, that’s why we have to support Aryan Dragon Genocider #3 in his divine quest towards ultimate rule over the continent.

I started rewatching GoT and I’m not bothering to watch past season 4 or 5. I’ve given up on any proper conclusion to the story, GRRM is never going to finish Winds of Winter let alone Dream of Spring. I honestly think the show and wider success of GoT killed any chance of it being finished, between the payday that came with it and the backlash to how the show finished I think GRRM is backed into a corner with no (satisfactory) way out

Yeah, I was finishing up the last released book when they announced the TV series and knew it wasn’t ever gonna be finished. Still haven’t seen the show.

I read all 4 books as a kid and decided to wait til the series was finished before consuming any more. I broke that embargo to watch exactly one episode of the show: the series finale.

I didn’t like it. This costuming sucked and the resolution seemed unsatisfying.

I look back at those books and I gotta wonder. Did Rothfuss pull the wool over our eyes? They’re not even that good! The second book is just Kvothe rambling about how he’s spent 500 years in the Hyperbaric Sex Chamber and got really popular with all the ladies. How did that get everyone psyched up for book 3 for a decade?

I have no idea! I guess I should’ve realized something was up when he evidently decided that the Rick & Morty D&D manual was more compelling than his epic fantasy series.

The first one was compelling, I think he did have strong prose and narration. The world building and magic was unique enough, and the bulk of book one is about surviving through poverty at magic school. There was also the expectation that we could get to the actual kingkiller plotline.

The second one he was clearly writing with one hand and the story meandered. Kvothe’s lovesickness became less bearable and he was living off passive income.

I think there is something to be said about the magic systems he came up with: it was crunchy enough for it to be believable as a teachable science while still maintaining a decent amount of enigma and mystique. Admittedly it kinda is divided into the two schools of Naming and Sympathy, with Naming being a lot more high fantasy in nature with Sympathy being more like a hard science, I still think about Sympathy a lot more than Naming though.

Also the frame story of Kvothe telling his own POV on his own legendary antics is pretty compelling, and it was genuinely impressive how he managed to juggle the two narratives and make them more or less equally interesting. I suppose the most frustrating thing about Rothfuss is the fact he was a pretty skilled author, at least back when I read his books.

Brother I gave up hope for it by 2016.

Best we have to look forward to are two good seasons of the Dunk and Egg show, then whatever fan fiction they put out afterwards.
