The Vampire, by Philip Burne-Jones, 1897

A vampire is a creature from folklore that subsists by feeding on the vital essence (generally in the form of blood) of the living. In European folklore, vampires are undead creatures that often visited loved ones and caused mischief or deaths in the neighborhoods they inhabited while they were alive. They wore shrouds and were often described as bloated and of ruddy or dark countenance, markedly different from today’s gaunt, pale vampire which dates from the early 19th century.

Vampiric entities have been recorded in most cultures; the term vampire was popularized in Western Europe after reports of an 18th-century mass hysteria of a pre-existing folk belief in the Balkans and Eastern Europe that in some cases resulted in corpses being staked and people being accused of vampirism.[1] Local variants in Eastern Europe were also known by different names, such as shtriga in Albania, vrykolakas in Greece and strigoi in Romania.

In modern times, the vampire is generally held to be a fictitious entity, although belief in similar vampiric creatures such as the chupacabra still persists in some cultures. Early folk belief in vampires has sometimes been ascribed to the ignorance of the body’s process of decomposition after death and how people in pre-industrial societies tried to rationalize this, creating the figure of the vampire to explain the mysteries of death. Porphyria was linked with legends of vampirism in 1985 and received much media exposure, but has since been largely discredited.

The charismatic and sophisticated vampire of modern fiction was born in 1819 with the publication of “The Vampyre” by the English writer John Polidori; the story was highly successful and arguably the most influential vampire work of the early 19th century. Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula is remembered as the quintessential vampire novel and provided the basis of the modern vampire legend, even though it was published after Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu’s 1872 novel Carmilla. The success of this book spawned a distinctive vampire genre, still popular in the 21st century, with books, films, television shows, and video games. The vampire has since become a dominant figure in the horror genre.

In b4 the close, life has been a touch more asskicking than usual, at one of my main job sites they’ve started to roll out the pre-cooked bourgeoisie decadent delusion LLM replacement of workers and as one of the excuses-entrapments they’ve started putting cameras and bait type items I recall from my retail hell days all over the place. This has gone on some weeks, more recently they started putting this obvious bait in recycling, the trash etc, ffs I’m a contractor and why you coming at me for? Sexbot 5000 isn’t replacing me for a good min yet.

For a funny story they threw some obvious bait gizmo in the trash, well asshat guess where its going? The dumpster-fire. Idc what it is or why. As I turn tf around to the safe warmth of the building I hear panicked voices nearby. Well, don’t fucking throw shit in recycling/the trash you don’t want thrown away.

But maybe you shouldn’t throw away blah blah, last time I didn’t throw away blah blah I got told. You never win at a min wage job.

it’s crazy, in 2008, i could tell shit-hit-the-fan when a middle aged man got hired to do registers at my job then.

In 2026 it’s worse because i cant get past resume screening as that guy now.

  • cat is now admitted into pet hospital because her bladder is blocked which is apparently so rare for female cats that none of the vets in the hospital have heard of it happening. hopefully they can clear her bladder with sedation before catheterising which is ofc invasive and long.

I just want to have her curled up next to me in bed while I fight the urge to wriggle into a comfy position that she’ll decide ““ruins the whole vibe”” and retreats to her little carboard box and blankie under the headboard of our bed.

It’s always a little funny seeing age-gap discourse show up and you’ve got performative comments saying, “I’m 40 and would never date anyone under 36!” Because apparently dating a 34 year old would be grooming lol

My dad is a forever maga and i cant get over how i used to think he was smart. The guy is a fucking idiot and thatd be fine if all his beliefs werent acidic and horrible.

Theres that stand up video where the comedian is telling people to grow up, its just how old people are.

Which is understandable but i just cant do it, i dont really want anything to do with him. Its not his fault but the way i grew up, the bad area, being poor, his shitty attitude and beliefs, those all affected me for the worse. I am a worse person for it who is significantly behind my peers because of it. I cant feel good about it.

    spoiler

I just saw tokyo story and its a movie about kids being shitty and distancing themselves from their parents and i feel guilty about it. But the dad in that movie before reforming was a drunk who terrorized them, they portray the daughter as cruel, captious and ungrateful but imagine how she feels about the whole thing.

The younger daughter and the widow have the ideal amount of remorse and sentiment but they never knew the mom and dad at their worse. The daughter was born and he stopped drinking. Same with the widow but knew them less.

The worst part about shitting your pants is that there’s really nothing you can do once it happens. You can’t wash your ass because you’ll just get it dirty again when you put the pants back on. Washing your pants doesn’t help because your butt is still all poopy. You just have to sit there and stink.

Seinfeld episode where Banya starts acting like a bloodthirsty zionist on stage and Jerry is upset that he’s stealing his bits.

“Just 2 weeks ago the guy was wearing a Keffiyah and now he’s up there doing Hasbara? He’s a phony!”

“Listen Jerry, Banya told me that his ancestors did that bit 5000 years ago, so he made it up first.”
