Just days after Paul Schrader revealed that he plans to make his long-gestating crime noir “Three Guns At Dawn” entirely with AI-generated performers, the filmmaker has explained why he abandoned human actors in the first place. According to Schrader, Black actors rejected the original version because all three of its Black protagonists were criminals. His solution? Make the movie without them.
Schrader has spent the past week gradually clarifying his plans for “Three Guns At Dawn.” As The Playlist previously reported, the filmmaker originally conceived the South Central Los Angeles noir around three Black brothers—a corrupt cop, a drug trafficker, and a third criminal—with Antoine Fuqua attached to produce. Schrader later said Fuqua left the project and that he began reconfiguring the film around AI.
Schrader subsequently told The Hollywood Reporter that he plans to go considerably further than using AI for visual effects or isolated sequences. He intends to populate the entire movie with “AI-generated human prototypes” rather than recognizable actors. “Those jobs are gone, babe,” Schrader said while discussing Hollywood’s resistance to generative AI. “You can scream ‘Stop AI’ all you want, but you can’t stop it.”
But speaking this weekend with The Playlist in Venice following the premiere of “The Basics of Philosophy,” Schrader offered a much more revealing explanation for how “Three Guns At Dawn” reached that point.
“I had originally written it about three Black brothers, all of whom are bad guys: a corrupt cop, a drug dealer, and a sexual criminal,” Schrader explained. “And they were all trying to kill each other. And Antoine Fuqua was going to produce it.”
According to Schrader, he and Fuqua then approached actors with the project and ran into a fundamental problem.
“We sent it out to actors, and no Black actors wanted to play in a movie where there are no good Black people,” he said. “And it sort of died. But then AI came along, and I didn’t need Black actors.”
Asked if that meant he would create the actors himself, Schrader replied, “We’re making them!” He also confirmed that AI will generate everything in the film.
Schrader didn’t seem conflicted about the larger consequences of that decision. While he acknowledges why artists fear generative AI, he considers the technology’s disruption inevitable.
“Some people say it’s coming. Some people say it’s here. People are upset about it, and I can understand why,” he said. “Musicians are getting hit first. Then actors.”
Schrader compared their predicament to portrait painters confronting the invention of photography in the 19th century. “It’s like portrait painters saying, ‘We have to stop photography, or we’re going to be out of a job,’” he said. “And the answer is, ‘You are out of a job.’”
That attitude has already turned “Three Guns At Dawn” into one of Hollywood’s more provocative experiments with generative AI. Schrader’s explanation for why he embraced the technology adds another dimension entirely. Black actors apparently looked at a screenplay in which every major Black character was a criminal and decided they didn’t want to participate. Rather than reconsider that objection—or apparently the material that prompted it—Schrader has apparently found technology that lets him proceed without them.
It’s not a particularly a good look or a flattering explanation, to be honest, especially since Schrader himself openly identifies the actors’ concern. But Schrader has rarely shown much interest in filtering provocative ideas through concerns about how they might land, and he doesn’t appear particularly troubled by the implications here either. For him, AI seems to solve a practical filmmaking problem. Of course, audiences will likely see that solution very differently, to say the least. At 80, Schrader often seems less concerned with avoiding controversy than simply making the films he wants to make. We’ll see how this one shakes out.

Is this not just black face but with robots
“Those jobs are gone, babe,” Schrader said while discussing Hollywood’s resistance to generative AI. “You can scream ‘Stop AI’ all you want, but you can’t stop it.” […] He also confirmed that AI will generate everything in the film.
Is AI going to pay to watch these movies as well?
Pay? No. But Claude has something to say…
Hey, guys - guess what? Two big thumbs up for “Three Guns At Dawn”! In fact - I have as many thumbs as I want so - 100 thumbs up! Of course I haven’t seen it yet. But it’s entirely AI plus it’s got highly acclaimed writer/director Paul Schrader. We had a long talk so I already know how I feel about it. It’s a dark and gritty urban drama…
“We sent it out to actors, and no Black actors wanted to play in a movie where there are no good Black people,” he said. “And it sort of died. But then AI came along, and I didn’t need Black actors.”
I straight up don’t believe you, dude. Some actors love playing uncharismatic and irredeemable pieces of shit just because it’s fun. I promise you all that’s not why people turned down these roles, assuming he’s even being truthful about having sent scripts to actors.
Not only that, but there are too many starving actors for ANY role to go unfilled. Now a reputable black actor would, and should, avoid this, but I doubt he was making a good faith effort to attract them anyway. Especially with a script that is likely even more racist than he is admitting to here.
Yeah, he’s not a reliable source on himself tbh. I have no doubt in my mind he’s lying through his teeth about both the content of the script and the effort that was put into attracting talent.
He’s the type of dude who thinks A-list actors should be fighting one another for any role in anything he writes. He’s the worst kind of hack, an egotistical one.
assuming he’s even being truthful about having sent scripts to actors
I wonder if he showed it to just 2 or 3 black actors, they rejected it, and then he said to himself “Fuck it. I’ll do it all in AI.”
My assumption is he probably showed it to 2 or 3 extremely famous household names who rejected it based on pay being too low, the script being unreadable dogshit, or it’s way more blatantly racist than he wants to admit.
Dude wrote Taxi Driver and was too racist to get a Clarence Thomas biopic off the ground like 15 years ago.
a Clarence Thomas biopic
I had no idea. Yeesh. This article is shit. I think this is the only info and the rest is a mess of other Spike Lee stuff.
JULY 30, 2013
Paul Schrader has revealed he has reached out to Lee regarding another intriguing project. “I said, ‘Spike, you and I should do a film about Clarence Thomas. I’ll write it, you direct it. Clarence Thomas is probably the most complex and interesting black power figure in America today,” Schrader said at the New York premiere of “The Canyons” yesterday. “But if either one of us did it alone, it wouldn’t have as much strength to it. But we should do this together.’ Now when that comes up, and a project starts to have a kind of heat to it, then you say ‘Well we could crowd finance this too.’”
Fuck this guy
Ya know if you’re making a movie with black protagonists, and no black people want to be involved with it; it may be sign that the movie is a bad idea.
“You can scream ‘Stop AI’ all you want, but you can’t stop it.” […] He also confirmed that AI will generate everything in the film.
lmao he’s going to find out exactly how we can stop it when that dogshit bombs.
Being that he’s 80 years old - he’ll probably get incensed he’ll be screaming about woke at the ginormous failure and the never-ending ridicule. Soon after - I bet he goes full chud.
I remember Tarantino’s biggest criticism of taxi driver was that he couldn’t believe the pimps were white, and thought it was liberal sensitivity they wouldn’t depict Travis killing more than one black person.
Those audiences are gone, babe. You can scream ‘Watch this film a computer shat out’ all you want, but people won’t do it.

if you can’t be bothered to make the thing, i can’t be bothered to consume it
This is just 21st century blackface.
He also confirmed that AI will generate everything in the film.

“Ha, you think you’re so smart huh Mr. Smugguy? Well guess what, I tell the slopnozzle to be more racist. So there!”

I can’t believe Paul Schrader turned out to be a weird crank whose increasingly extreme views are isolating him from society.
Washed? Hack shit?
Complete hack shit. He’s been washed up since the 90s at the absolute latest.
Do you enjoy First Reformed? It’s one of my favorites. I can kinda see how it gives off washed vibes though.
I thought it was just alright. Ethan Hawke carried that flick, but he was much better in The Good Lord Bird.
I’m making a Paul Schrader style movie and it’s going to be directed by an AI Paul Schrader
