The United States is on track to produce 1.53 billion bushels of wheat this year, down 23% from 2025, according to the latest crop production forecast from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service released its August crop production report Tuesday, showing farmers expect to harvest an average of 47.8 bushels per acre. That’s down 5.5 bushels from last year’s yield.
Winter wheat, which accounts for the largest share of U.S. production, faces the steepest decline. The USDA forecasts 990 million bushels, a 29% drop from 2025. Average yields are expected to reach 47.0 bushels per acre, down 7.9 bushels from the previous year. The report shows mixed trends for other wheat varieties. Durum wheat production is projected at 66.4 million bushels, down 23% from last year. Farmers expect to harvest 38.4 bushels per acre, a decrease of 2.2 bushels from 2025.
Other spring wheat shows more resilience, with production forecast at 474 million bushels. That’s down just 5% from last year, with yields expected to reach 51.1 bushels per acre, only 0.6 bushel below 2025 levels. The August forecast represents a slight downward revision from USDA’s July projections. Overall wheat production dropped less than 1% from last month’s estimate, while durum wheat production fell 6% from the previous forecast.
The USDA collects data from farmers nationwide to produce monthly crop production estimates. The service released the August report on Tuesday, providing updated projections as harvest continues across major wheat-producing states.
The invisible hand of the free market has decided it’s more important to build data centers than grow food. Fortunately humans recently evolved to eat data instead of food so this is fine

Picking up my subsidized Ozempic/Kratom infused Soylent-bug Psycho-flavor Monster MRE from the nearest gas station. Got most of what I need from pawning some blood but the rest I had to finance with Klarna. Haven’t eaten since yesterday because I accidentally hit the double or nothing at the ration dispenser and lost.

Nearly 50% of the wheat produced in the US is exported, although the share of the world market has declined due to competition from Argentina, Australia, Canada, European Union (France and Germany), Turkey, United Kingdom and also recently from Ukraine and Russia. The exported wheat varieties are hard red winter, white wheat (about 66%), hard red spring (about 50%), soft red winter, and durum wheat. However, producers continue to increase exports, as wheat products have not been competitive in the domestic market in recent years.[14]
One of the widely criticized export policies of the US was the PL 480 (Public Law 480), instituted in 1954, which lasted until 1969. India had a major share of about 50% in receiving this aid under it. This policy was criticized because it had damaged the export potential of many countries, in particular Australia and Canada. It was also said that this policy discouraged countries from developing their own agriculture.[28] In India, this aid “bankrupted large numbers of Indian farmers”.[29]
just one of the levers of control the US exerts on other nations. that power is starting to dwindle now. inshallah it ends.
I’m sure I don’t have to remind you all but wheat exports from Ukraine are fucked too. Lots of people are going to be very hungry
Good thing there are no interruptions in the supply of fertilizer happening concurrently.
