I’m sorry but is this what counts as an ADHD test in the US? A flash game and answering a few questions online and then you’re diagnosed?
Edit: Just want to clarify that I’m diagnosed with ADHD and had to do alot more than this in Sweden.
I think these are for screening (before going through diagnosis process)? Correct me I’m wrong tho
It depends on how much money you have. The less money you have the more rigorous (costly also) the testing is going to be.
Private healthcare in EU also can get you an adhd diagnosis though playing a flash game and answering a quiz. I’m certain that a lot of people who don’t have adhd (or other conditions) use this to get legal recreational drugs, but

Can we please stop to defend medical garekeeping like that? It’s not as if buying much more recreational stimulants than methylphenidate on the black market is particularly hard or expensive, it’s not as if there are more recreational stimulant users than people with ADHD either. And paying a psychiatrist every time you fill a script on top of paying full pharmacy prices for your medication isn’t cheap either. IDK how much you pay for speed nowadays, but back when i used to be a little rave kid a gram set you back about 5€. The idea that it’s a meaningful problem that people go to a doctor to tweak is laughable.
The reality in the European public healthcare system is that it is incredibly draining and time consuming to get medicated for ADHD, i’ve been trying for almost a year now, i’m completely at my wit’s end because i just can’t afford to pay out of pocket every time i run out of meds and i seriously do not know how to handle this shit any longer. I’Ve wasted half a year at some shithouse of a clinic that kept making up new requirements to get a script until i asked my asshole of a doctor what she would come up with next instead of actually treating me and then she referred me to case management so they could dump me. Yes, in spite of having a confirmed diagnosis that i had to see two therapists for to make extra extra sure i am not faking it.
Fuck this boomer ass “uh sweaty aDHD is achually overdiagnosed and we should be really really careful to give out all these dangerous drugs” nonsense, it’s pure ableism.
Apologies if I lacked clarity, however I must restate that I specifically began with the notion that the system is explicitly designed to be cumbersome for the masses. The speculation that wealthy elites abuse the system they’ve created, for the heck of it, through corruption/bribery, while discarding people who are in desperate need of assistance doesn’t strike me as ableist either. Since I’m critiquing able bodied, wealthy, elites, abusing the world for the fun of it.
Bourgeoisie abusing the system cannot possibly cause a crisis of over-diagnosis, because they’re numerically insignificant. If anything it’s under diagnosed. But are we having a discussion here or is this a zero sum game of heroes and villains?
I would vager any reasonable person would be okay with a sufficient, but not over-complicated diagnosis for treatment purposes of a patient, not to gatekeep them, but to make sure they stay healthy. If medical procedures are used as a form of apartheid or deliberate harm then naturally those who caused this should be punished for their crimes against humanity. I’m just afraid that anything short of perfection labels me as a villain and then what choice do I have left? Just eliminate me at that point, it seems like trust between us impossible.
Sorry, I’m confused. You say they prescribe you ADHD meds, but you’re also “trying to get medicated for it” and then you “pay out of pocket” for something (black market? no judgment).
Do you have “a history of substance use” or whatever they call it because in that case they get all weird. I had problems with alcohol 10 years ago and they’re going to screen me regularly just for telling them that. I still get medicated tho.
No, they do not prescribe me anything and I can’t afford to visit a psychiatrist without going through my insurance.
Okej, so you’re diagnosed but you’re self-medicating?
Just a heads up that they will probably drug screen you if you get a prescription and if you’re asking for the medication that’s like a giant red flag to them, even if you’re diagnosed.
It’s ironic because “use-disorder” (not saying you have it) is very common for ADHD and from what I’ve read giving us the actual working medication lowers the risk of self-medicating with other stuff. Recurring theme with drugs really. Punishing and “withholding” is just pushing people ways from treatment/rehabilitation instead of giving them way to safely transition from the self-medication stuff into “normal” with an already established safety net but I digress…
Okej, so you’re diagnosed but you’re self-medicating?
I said at no point that i am on medication, i just clarified i’m unmedicated, why do you keep putting words in my mouth? Seriously, what the fuck?
Okej. You wrote:

That’s what got me confused.

I’m really sorry for your horrible experience and I hope you can stumble into proper care sooner rather than later. My regular NP left my covered psych office a couple of years ago and I had crippling anxiety until I got to meet the new one because they can just decide to cut you off from incredibly helpful medication on a whim.
Testing in the UK is a questionnaire called ASRS: https://add.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/adhd-questionnaire-ASRS111.pdf
If you score over a certain threshold congrats, you’re diagnosed. Then you’ll talk with the doc about it a bunch and your individual issues and general doctor judgement from that will be used to determine medication etc.
