Pardons haven’t only been issued by Trump. They exist because context and extenuating circumstances are important.

Just because they can be abused doesn’t mean every pardon is corrupt.

It only takes one person intent on nullification to hang a jury. The prosecution can retry the case, but they have to decide if it’s worth it.

If juries were fairly selected he’d 100% get jury nullification…

Which is why it wasn’t going to happen organically in the current selection.

It’s like how to beat “straw purchase” gun laws: you just have to lie.

If you’ve heard of it as a concept, that’s enough to take you off. To the point it’s been a strategy for a long time of people who want to avoid jury duty. It doesn’t always work, because most of the time they don’t really care

Something like this, the government isn’t letting anyone on who knows what it is, and especially today would investigate anyone who suddenly “learned about it” after being selected.

      So to be clear:

      1. It should have worked.

      2. It wouldn’t have.

Like, we’d have need Mario to get on the jury while wearing an obvious disguise, and they’d be taking almost as much of a risk as player 2. It just wasn’t likely.

I’m super interested in his reasoning for this, but I’d be really surprised if they let him do interviews anytime soon, and what matters more than us knowing is his legal strategies working. We just gotta wait and see.

Well, the charges he’s pleading to are stalking. Not the murder charges, and pleading in the federal case can get the state case for murder thrown out on double jeopardy under NY law if the federal case is settled first.

This isn’t that bad of a move for him.

Well yeah. There’s no federal murder charge. Stalking can still carry a life sentence but he’d likely get less than that.

But, settling the federal case can kill the state case if the federal case is done first.

If the state case gets underway before the federal case is resolved, there’s no federal double jeopardy law to kill the federal case so he could still be convicted in both.

It’s always going to be better to only have one case at the federal level than convictions at the state and federal level.

He was facing that regardless. With virtually zero chance of being acquitted, no matter what the internet wants to think.

By getting rid of the state case though, he stands a chance of getting the federal one overturned on appeal and being free, vs getting it overturned on appeal and then just going straight to state prison.

It’s still completely insane to me that this pretty little Italian man is being punished for a crime that CCTV footage showed was a tall angry Anglo-Saxon man in his late 40s.

The original CCTV footage showed a much older very white very dangerous man.

The only way Mangione could be dangerous is if I put pineapple on my pizza or I mispronounced “Rigatoni”. That’s just a joke, I’d never put pineapple on pizza… Pineapple is only good when it’s fresh.

One of the delicious things in life is you fry a piece of pork in some garlic and butter, then fry a slice of bread along it on both sides so it gets crisp, then you quick fry a slice of pineapple and put on top, lettuce on the bottom is optional but recommended, et voila. Salt, pepper, heavenly.

Now imagine if you did that but instead of toast you use a flat round dough of some sort…

What? Luigi literally just said he did it.

He told a judge that he followed Thompson to a UnitedHealth Group investor conference and shot him on the morning of Dec 4 2024. He also explained that leading up to the murder he emailed UnitedHealthcare while pretending to be an investor at a firm managing more than $50 million in assets so he could get information about the conference. He also acknowledged building a 3D-printed gun with a silencer and that this was the weapon he used for the shooting.

        And I quote

“On the morning of Dec 4 2024 I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan and he died”

This isn’t new information to anyone who actually knows about the case… we all know he did it, we’re all just pretending like he’s innocent because we support him

yet these comments read like people don’t understand that we’re joking when we say he’s innocent.

That’s concerning that you guys are so thick you literally don’t recognize jokes when you see them anymore.

There’s nothing to argue about it. He did it. He admitted it. He’s pleading guilty.

Gee, could it be that murder is bad?

Always? In every case? I don’t think most people believe this. I think we have different opinions on what constitutes justified murder, but I think most of us have a line.

Which is fine, but flippantly brushing it off with this rings very hollow to me. Especially since you go on to make it sound like if it did somehow fix everything, it would be justifiable.

but surely you can’t believe this act contributes in any positive way to reform of the health care system?

Why not? We can argue about the morality of terrorism, but it has definitely effected change internationally in many different political situations and cultures. Almost never is it any one act as being effective though.

I’m actually not so sure here. Is this going to be the thing that instigates reform? Probably not. Did it galvanize more people and help many realize that even many of their political opponents agree that care is in an intolerable state? I don’t know, I kind of think it did, and I think that pretty likely does positively impact the movement.

Not sure what the last non sequitur is about. We all know insurance exists internationally, but the situations aren’t at all comparable to the US.

Depends on the definition used. It can be used to mean both the legal terminology, or can simply be the concept of premeditated killing of a person. I would still say a slave plotting to kill his master is definitely committing murder, even if it’s justifiable.

Regardless, in that case the comment I’m responding to is just a straight up tautology (the killing of the CEO was bad because it was a murder [unjustified killing]; this doesn’t actually argue whether there’s no justification, just defines it that way in the premise), and I’m giving the more generous reading here with room to disagree.

I don’t celebrate the murder of a United Healthcare CEO, whom by the way denied more Healthcare claims than any other insurance company in the world (by a decent margin). But I sure as hell don’t feel sorry for the guy.

His policies can be directly tied to thousands of cases where people who needed life saving treatment, died so they could save a few bucks.

But yeah, sit up on your high horse and feel superior to everybody else. You’re lucky you haven’t had to experience a health crisis that could potentially determine whether you live or die, or have a job.

Yeah, it’s hateful and barbaric, but not stupid, and it’s what anyone who is barbaric and hateful deserves; I believe in radical proportionality, thus what you give is what you deserve to receive back, exactly, no more and no less (if you give someone five punches in the face with a given force, you deserve exactly five punches in the face with an amount of force proportional to your resistance). You can’t expect a damn serial killer protected by millions of dollars in total assets and the title of CEO to receive flowers. And proportionally to his crime, a simple stay in jail is equivalent to giving him a bed of roses.

So, if you hate others with no reason and kill others with no reason, you deserve to be hated and killed because you’re giving reasons for that.

Saying “insurance should be illegal” is very near the top of the list of stupidest things that one can say.

You also need to work more on your radical proportionality idea.

I believe in radical proportionality, thus what you give is what you deserve to receive back, exactly, no more and no less (if you give someone five punches in the face with a given force, you deserve exactly five punches in the face with an amount of force proportional to your resistance).

I don’t know what you even mean by “proportional to your resistance” and how you quantify punch force and resistance, but if it’s exactly no more and no less than what you got, how is it also proportional to something else? Like I can’t eat exactly 2 pounds of ice cream, proportional to my belly circumference. It’s either one or the other.

Killing somebody is a pretty intense act, I imagine. A sane person doesn’t take another’s life in cold blood. What LM did is not a sane thing to do, regardless of what one thinks about the victim and the victims’ personal responsibility in other people’s suffering. Because it is not a sane thing to do, it’s futile debating its rationale.

I also don’t think that this murder should get special treatment on some utilitarian grounds, such as because it’s a heroic act that saved the lives of millions. I don’t think there is any concrete benefit of the murder on any specific healthcare, welfare, or health equity issue. Where are the masses who got their health back thanks to LM?

So what are you exactly celebrating? What would the statues commemorate? A poor insane man, killing a company executive, replaceable as a professional in the organization, and irreplaceable as a person in his family. Pure insanity and suffering, with no benefit, no winners. It’s a fucking sad and tragic story. It’s a powerful story undeniably, that’s why people follow it, but there is nothing to celebrate about it.

Hey you know how sometimes in society, a lunatic runs around the town square with a gun shooting all kinds of people? Dead bodies everywhere, like they’re filming Heat 2?

Then one cop steps up and fires the perfect shot, taking the bad guy down. No more victims.

The health care CEO was the lunatic shooter and Luigi was (allegedly) the cop.

You’d cheer that cop. That’s what these people are doing, like it or not, agree or not. That is what they are doing.

The lack of universal health care in the US accounts for an estimated annual death increase well north of one hundred thousand people. It’s the oligarchs who are behind that push against it.

Wake me up when you get angry at the people corrupting our democracy and maybe i’ll listen to your complaints. Until then, pardon me for supporting action against the people fucking our country.

What action are you taking about? Shooting a guy in the head? What problem does that exactly solve? He didn’t even shoot an oligarch, he shot an executive.

[Norman Rockwell Painting] We don’t want to award public assassination of company leaders.

By all accounts Luigi extra-judicially assassinated a person that broke no laws and people here think he is a hero.

    Freaks.

laws are not what make something ok or moral. just legal. the ceo he killed? that guy killed thousands through legal corp policy putting profit over people. why are you ok with that?

That’s a valid but also very superficial take. The reason many people sympathise with him is that he killed only a single person, whereas Brian Thompson killed thousands by denying them the healthcare they already paid for. The fact that that’s legal is the real problem here.

And rejection rated dropped after the murder, so it’s entirely possible that Luigi saved more lives than he took.

Yes, this is a sick take, but it’s also a sick system, and denying that is unhelpful and dishonest. The system needs to be fixed. Something good needs to come out of this, not merely the punishment of this one guy.
