My screen has been doing this intermittently every few seconds the past few weeks. It started as a few lines of pixels at the top of the screen, and just keeps getting worse.
This is called solarization, and it means the display or display adapter (GPU) is COOKED. The timing controller might be on a separate board which you could try replacing, but this typically has a really low success rate as it’s often an issue that also fucks the main board.
Unclear if the tcon kills the main board or if whatever kills it typically kills both, but she’s dead.
This happened to be, but on a single screen over DP and not HDMI to my second monitor, and it is rarer, like once every 2 to 3 weeks rarer, is this also related to GPU failure? I assumed otherwise since my other monitor worked fine.
Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh hm. Longer windows on intermittent stuff are always weird and hard to troubleshoot.
Have you tried unplugging everything and plugging it back in? How about different cables? Is there a specific scenario where it happens? A game or program? Only when watching video?
I might as well give up since the only seemingly common cause I found was it overheating, it occurred when I was doing stuff on my phone so it had no animations, at worst the cable is at fault but I can’t really change it, even if I did I can’t really test it.
Wait, the GPU is overheating? Or the display?
Display
so even reflowing the solder in the oven wouldn’t work for OP?
You could try, but it’s probably dead chips.
I must be blessed because when something that looked an awful lot like this happened to my laptop, I opened it up and reseated both ends of the ribbon cable for the display and - touch wood - it’s been fine since, over two years.
Reseating all the ribbon cables works when the reason for timing issues is just the cable being partially detached.
If you’ve tried reseating cables and that doesn’t work, it’s cooked.
Yeah, all joking aside I was riding around with the thing in my backpack for years so I was sure it was something jostling loose. The cable seemed a fair guess and it was out of warranty so I felt like the worst case was probably just a slightly more expensive repair unless I fucked up really bad.
