I expect these characters to appear in a thousand Youtube thumbnails photoshopped AI’d to be 600 pounds overweight, with blue hair and face piercings with the transgender flag also pasted somewhere with a title like CUCKS OF WAR
With regards to the actual game it feels like they basically wiped the slate clean and started from scratch. The movement mechanics have been completely overhauled and you can freely jump and climb on stuff now and it doesn’t feel like a cover shooter from 2008 anymore with the exact same reused animations and sound effects

Gears 3 let you play as a Baneling and explode people in acid, that’s always gonna have a special place in my heart.
Wasn’t gears always this flavor of woke? Like, I distinctly remember Anya being just as badass as the rest of the main cast. And wasn’t she literally giving orders a lot of the time?
Gears is about how fascists brought themselves to near extinction then barely managed to “resolve” it and then did the same thing again.
In the first two games she’s just a voice on the radio and she’s not Marcus’ commanding officer, she just hangs back at base to relay intelligence and orders from higher ups to the squad. Her uniform and hairstyle make her look like a WWII-era radio operator or similar non-combat supporting staff member
In the first two games you also never see female soldiers on the battlefield but you do hear several female helicopter pilots on the radio. I think this was mostly Epic being lazy and not wanting to deal with creating different hitboxes and animations for a smaller female frame in their dudebro series where every other playable character has ridiculous 90s action figure proportions.
Gears of War 3 finally added playable female characters and made Anya a frequent squad member in campaign. They also added a new female character named Sam. While their character designs weren’t overtly horny, their armour and uniform was much more sleek and form-fitting than the male equivalents and both had thin, slender builds and long-ish feminine haircuts. Gears of War 3 also had a badass grandma officer but the Youtube right-wing grifting industrial complex didn’t exist back then so no one gave a shit. I’m pretty sure I remember some griping at the time about how female COG soldiers ruined immersion because they clearly wouldn’t be big and strong enough to kill Locusts or whatever though
Gears of War 4 introduced a new cast of characters including a new young female character who The Coalition then promoted to the new series protagonist in Gears 5, sidelining Marcus Fenix’s son. Because she was a woman, hispanic, had a sort of androgynous haircut (and dyed hair!!!) and replaced the most generic white guy protagonist in existence* Gears 5 also got a lot of hate back in 2019

Kind of woke-lite. But it’s been getting more woke over time. I like it.
First game had a white, black, mexican, and a korean. Person giving you orders is a lady. Your a dude who got thrown in prison for disobaying orders. Your best pal joined the army to look for his wife. The women bad girls are the strongest enemy’s in the game are are mini bosses. You get comments for blowing up propane tanks becuase the people out there use that shit man. Pretty okay stuff for the time.
2 had a maori guy and a texan guy added for a bit. They even had a shy timid femboy has your companion for a while. You know if you wore your helmet; you’d have a filter for all this dust. But then I couldn’t see snipers as well… oh and and bad guys have a queen. oooOOOooo
3… oh they had more than one black guy in the cast. Woah! And they were completely different personalities and dialects. To save the day you have to team up with essentually the USSR. And yeah finally you got to play as a lady. Blond white girl and tan Australian woman. I had a crush on her.

5… you are the lady as main character now. Theres a soilder with a prosthetic leg added as your squad mate. Russia dude added. You find out your best friend ordered the clankers to shoot the protestors that one day. More lady soilders.
I’ve embellished a lot to hide spoilers. But its been pretty woke. 1-3 is an incredible brother in arms nerrative experience. If that’s not your thing… don’t bother.
Oh and I think the first game had lots of different translations.
Yea G*mers are apparently pissed off that Mags, your squadmate, has a single scene were she picks up a photograph from her apartment that shows her with another woman and some hearts on it. I guess that is pushing the gay woke agenda. Funny part is she is probably the most interesting character so far, not that that is saying much for a gears game
I like the helmeted Kiwi twins and their banter. Also it seems like they recast Tai Kaliso with a Maori (?) voice actor instead of it being just Baird’s voice actor doing a vaguely ethnic voice. I’m sure someone’s mad about that somewhere

If I know my Hoo-rah Fuck yeah Big Military Boys killing them aliens kind of video games, then she’s going to be a tough and harsh commander at first and insist upon things like “basic military discipline” and it will make things go poorly and she’ll learn the important lesson of letting the boys be boys and that her place is just to point them at the enemy and let them do their thing and not getting in the way of their fun and not forcing them to go to bed on time MOM!
Despite being heavily associated with Xbox’s 360 era dudebro brand, Gears of War has never actually been that bad. It’s not even toxic on the level of your average 80s action movie, it’s too inoffensive for that
Oh ok, I think I’ve only played the first one, and the only thing I can really remember is it being that kind of tough guy thing, I think there was a #notlikeothergirls tough girl character as well who could “keep up with the boys” which has been the archetype for every single Strong Female Character in big bits of media for the past 20 years, so I guess it might be more of a “guilt by association” kind of thing.
