It is literally neither of those things. It is a refutation of the premise through what is essentially performance art. Like when Gottfrid Svartholm built a machine that copied then immediately shredded a copy of a work continuously as a statement on copyright law counting each individual copy as an infringement of a work.

Don’t be AI bros, what the hell.

But this is a locally run model, it needs to be for the idea to work, the art piece of the “AI torture chamber” does as much ecological damage as having a normal computer turned on.

It’s an excellent piece of performance art.

I generally find performance art to be confused and kind of pointless too so that all tracks.

Do whatever you want! None of this is my cup of tea. It has nothing to do with the AI being sentient or not. I think the less you can engage with it the better. No matter how antagonistic you’re being or whatever statement you are attempting to make.

The people doing this weird torture chamber stuff are definitely sentient and definitely capable of creating other forms of art that don’t involve anything but the human imagination. That also seems like a pretty important artistic statement to be making in the age of AI slop. But hey what do I know!

Again, I truly don’t care. I’m just never gonna waste a single second of my life engaging with the AI if I can avoid it. And the artistic, performative angle on this trend just kinda falls flat to me. Maybe I’m just not the intended audience! that’s fine, have fun! I’m still happy to see the real AI heads upset about this! Just not for me, I’d rather play video games if I have to engage with the demonic entity known as “computer”

It has nothing to do with the AI being sentient or not

It literally does though. If LLMs could feel pain that would make them sentient. The fact that they obviously cannot and the fact that the premise of whether they can is inherently nonsensical is therefore extremely relevant to the question of ai sentience.

Setting up an art piece that by its very nature renders the concept ridiculous is therefore a relevant statement on LLM sentience.

You “shouldn’t use AI” is a fair statement, but this isn’t some plagiarism piece, the output isn’t even the relevant part. No one is seeing any actual piece of LLM generated art, the art is in the running of a model that is being prompt injected with an arbitrary number of “Owie” token, not what it puts out.

No you weren’t. You were saying that the “AI torture chamber” was an acknowledgement of AI sapience and sadism by the guy who made it. I can see your post.

But it is neither of those things. It’s very premise is a refutation of both of those things, and the only way it could be sadism is if you acknowledge AI as being capable of feeling anything. Which, again, it is set up to disprove.

Edit: You know, I think the problem might be that you don’t know what the OP is in reference to.

So, there is an idea in the AI hype sphere that AI may be capable of cognition, some level of sentience, and capable of feeling pain.

“Danmar” here reasoned that pain is nociceptive stimuli, so he built a bit of code that added “Pain” tokens to the AI dependent on arbitrary stimuli. And he saw that it fucked with the LLM (because he’s added a bunch of garbage to it) causing it to spit out nonsense. QED AIs feel pain. (Danmar was either the one who made this code, or he was one of the first boosters of it)

Someone pointed out this is nonsense by creating a piece of code that just did the stimuli over and over again and ran it continuously. Creating the “AI torture chamber”

He reacted to this by posts like the one you see in the OP.

You come in and say that this actually proves that the “AI torture chamber” person is sadistic, thus agreeing with the premise of Danmar.

No I was saying it’s weird to make a torture machine for something that is not sentient unless you think it is and my link was to refute your accusation of me being an “AI bro” and while I know it was not your intent I am also not a “bro” and would rather not continue this pointless exchange. Have a nice weekend.
