Ignoring the mtg element but it’s so fucking frustrating that obvious kayfabe like this works so well. The ruling class is so good at making up/using this kind of bs to just fill the entire news cycle and get people scared and riled up so they don’t think about the real source of their problems. The fascists get to hold the flashlight under their chin & fearmonger (so they don’t have to talk about making positive material improvements to their supporters lives) and the lite fascists get to hand wring and whine about the fascists being obvious with their racism (so they don’t have to talk about making positive material improvements in their supporters lives) while both hound and suppress anyone one degree to the left of centre

They’re only good at this because most Americans are out there looking for news that reaffirm their racist beliefs. Appealing to a libidinal impulse through racism wouldn’t be a problem if people didn’t find pleasure in hating foreigners and black people.

The only people still getting mad at the caravan are maga holdouts who just want something to be mad at, and don’t want to talk about the war or Israel or fuel prices or inflation

Libs probably don’t even notice the attempted media spectical because they have a huge buffet of things to get mad at, so why bother with this gruel

She’s your dumbest aunt who genuinely believed everything Fox News said about Oz but somehow managed to get to the curtain, looked behind it and went “Wait it’s just a guy back there!”

It mystifies me. She’s not somebody like Liz Cheney who can make millions off of libs by marketing herself as a “reasonable” republican and some libs even think of her as an ally. For example - I think Cheney could easily get a weekly show on MS NOW if she wanted to. But libs really hate MTG. Rebranding to be lib-friendly is impossible. I don’t get it.

She could be going through genuine disillusionment or something. That or trying to pivot to the Tucker politics of condemning both parties in order to sell a new movement of future renewal now that MAGA is turning into a clear train-wreck that won’t help them down the road.

You underestimate the spinelessness of libs. If their talking heads say she’s one of the “good republicans” they’ll all immediately agree.

I mean, many of them think Bush Jr was a swell guy now. Granted, it’s been longer since he was in pop culture (“the discourse”), but from what I’ve seen, rebranding to be lib-friendly is eventually possible for literally any conservative, so long as that conservative is framed as being oppositional to the current agreed-upon villain.

I agree that Cheney was always in a better position for it, but I don’t think that rules out worse offenders of liberal sensibilities from getting the rehabilitation treatment. You could be right, but I’m curious why you think MGT in particular could never be rehabilitated in the eyes of libs - libs who are always hungry for an excuse to extend an olive branch to fascists who make the right noises.

why you think MGT in particular

Liberals love to judge a book by its cover even though they’d never admit it.

Dubya was as dumb as a bag of hammers but he was smart enough to as often as possible use the words speechwriters wrote for him. Libs would never, ever call him an intellectual. But his idiotic Bushisms are long forgotten. Plus libs always fall into the trap of thinking somebody like Dubya is decent and reasonable because he sounded that way. Libs remember the carefully constructed façade of words and the presentation. It make a very bad analogy - they forget to read the “book” itself.

I love to call him Dubya. And it amuses me how very rare it is for older liberals to call him that. Even on social media where people count every character they might use a nickname like “Bush the Younger”. Why not use “Dubya”? It’s shorter, simpler, and funnier.

The online lib comments about MTG I saw - seemed to show a seriously hostile level of parasocial relationship. I can think of four reasons off the top of my head. In no particular order… One, She’s a southerner so she’s sub-standard in my many of their minds. Two, I think libs would say she’s trashy if not white trash. Three to put it mildly - she didn’t bother to put up an intellectual façade. Four - she was a rabid Trump supporter.

I think they see her as dumb, rule, hostile, and irredeemable. At one (or was it two?) of Biden’s State of the Union speeches she stood up and yelled. I can’t remember because who gives a shit. But libs really think that stuff like “lack of civility” matters. How dare she!

Tbh I just don’t think your average American remembers any given person or event long enough for any of that to matter. American politicians literally put on a new costume and make up a new life story and everyone’s just like “yep, this is who he’s always been now”
