I’ve always wanted to play everquest but the barrier for entry always seemed way too high but it looks like this version of the game turns it into a more beginner sandbox which actually looks like a nice way to play casually.

I kind of like how games are now targetting more casual players who don’t have thousands of hours to grind away. Yeah I know the original has friction which is part of its charm but I really cba I just wanna experience the game without a headache.

I didn’t know this was a thing, outside of private servers.

I have a complicated history with EQ. I played it hardcore for 3 or 4 years with an online friend, who cut me off very suddenly after an argument, and my interest waned over the next few months and I moved on to World of Warcraft.

I have a lot of fond memories, but I think most of them are more around the people I played with than the actual content. Part of me wants to chase that nostalgia, or to try and meet a new batch of fellow weirdos, but I’m growing wary of just about any nostalgia-focused marketing endeavour these days.

Nah, can’t afford the subscription, don’t have time to game neither. My last experience with EQ was negative enough I’m still swearing off online gaming entirely, unless its on a server I spun up to play on myself.

This reminds me a lot of the The Heroes Journey 's ruleset, it was an eqemu server that was shut down a while back for being pay to win and had a lawsuit brought up by Daybreak that set back the whole EQ emu scene a whole lot.
