So i looked this up and apparently Freeway 401 has up to twenty lanes at the widest sections, how tf do you even drive on something like that, this must cause a traffic jam every time somebody wants to get to an off-ramp.
On average there’s 6-8 lanes in each direction, so 12-16 in total. Those 6-8 lanes are split into two roadways, one for local traffic and one for express traffic. At some interchanges you can switch between the local and express roadways and at those points a few extra lanes for the ramps are where the 20-lane figure comes from.
