Chappell Roan previously released a 2023 single ‘Red Wine Supernova’, which had been inspired by Brigitte Bardott. Chappell Roan was surprisingly unaware of the actress’s political views.

Have you skimmed Brigitte Bardot’s Wikipedia page? There’s no tab for controversies or allegations or anything like that. Its a hagiography.

I did think it was very convenient that all the bad stuff was tucked under the subheading “Politics and legal issues” while “Animal rights activism” gets its own top-level heading.

There’s also stuff about calling out misogynists and sexual predators in the same tab. Like painting her as a land of contrasts not an old racist lady.

            • Which is also extremely misleading given that Bardot vocally opposed the Me Too movement and outright demanded that

              SA apologia

men are “conquering” in their flirting behavior and do not accept a simple no. She also self-described as antifeminist. The amount of internalized misogyny she put on full display in recent years was absolutely revolting.

Sounds as if the article was doctored by a PR agent.

I think the fact that Chappell deleted her posts after learning that politics of the actress is somewhat redeeming. She could have doubled down or tried to save face. It seems like a lot of people didn’t know the politics of the actress.

Also Chappell is a lesbian and her music is meant to like celebrate LGBT themes.

She also refused to play the whitehouse under Biden over Palestine and previously attacked democrats on not defending trans rights.

Like her heart is in the right place honestly l.

I’m a trans lesbian communist and all I knew about Brigitte Bardot was she was…an actress? Like Chappell Roan’s record has been pretty good in my books, it’s a mistake and she fixed it.

      • She didn’t just endorse Le Pen, she married one of her personal advisors, and was in turn endorsed by Le Pen as well. She was basically a card carrying neofash in her last years. Absolutely awful.

I agree on giving Chappel Roan the benefit of the doubt here, tho. She’s a twentysomething from Tennesee, it’s entirely plausible her knowledge of Bardot had a ton of blind spots. It’s already surprising that she knew about her movies in the first place, this is some ancient mid 20th century stuff. And when we’re talking about a queer woman who was targeted by a harassment campaign over her support for Palestine, i do cut her some slack as long as she handles criticism in a good way. Would be different if she’d double down on things ofc, but there’s a difference between having a milkshake duck moment and defending a reactionary piece of shit when you should know better.

Brigitte bardot is considered a classic sex symbol, at least that’s how I know of her. I’ve never seen her movies but I knew she was a sex symbol from some old movies. I knew nothing of her terrible politics until she died.

She was convicted 6 times for inciting racial hatred. She denied being racist, but she criticized race mixing, immigration, and Islam (“savages”, “invaders”, “destroying us”), so I think it’s pretty clear.

Sort of interestingly she got awards from PETA for her animal rights stance, and from UNESCO for her efforts to combat climate change. I guess racial hatred was more important than those issues though, since she supported people who definitely didn’t help those issues.
