Is there a website or a list that showcases ‘dumb’ electronics that don’t need Wi-Fi to operate? It appears that there aren’t many new dumb TVs on the market, so having such a resource would be really beneficial.
For a dumb TV you can either not connect a smart one to WiFi directly, or you can buy a commercial display panel, which are usually pretty high quality and about the same price as a regular retail TV.
I’ve heard that the commercial display panels are more expensive, because they’re geared towards enterprise use.
It’s likely because they aren’t subsidized by personal data sales.
The other option is a large format computer monitor. They aren’t putting smart nonsense into those just yet
They are, unfortunately. Look at some of samsungs models, i think HP has a few as well
Jfc, this is why we can’t have nice things
Or a projector, or a gaming console display.
Additionally, if your smart TV requires an internet connection in order to be set up in the first place, use the hotspot on your phone with a new SSID, and set it up, and then change the SSID on your phone.
After that, it should work without an internet connection, and it’ll spend all of its time attempting to connect to an internet connection that is no longer there.
Until it needs a factory reset to fix something and the manufacturer no longer maintains the activation server. I would never recommend buy a TV that requires internet for initial setup. The last thing you want is for it to turn into a Spotify car thing, humane AI pin, etc.
It’s kind of wild to think that you could make so much money by making an open-source TV ecosystem.
Or if making money is not your thing, you could acquire so much internet clout by developing it and then publishing it online.
Forget trying to get a dumb TV at least if you care about quality. Just don’t connect it to the Internet - if you really are paranoid crack it open and disconnect the WiFi antenna.
Bullshit; NEC makes great dumb TVs that are packed with every feature a certain type of* geek could want.
Do they make anything in the 80+ inch range you would recommend?
Given that they manufacture TVs for commercial use, they make stadium-sized screens; I’m sure you can find something you’ll like.
Okay find me one with Dolby Vision
Fair. Edited my comment.
(But to be even more fair, in my experience Lemmy users tend to not give a single flying fuck about Dolby Vision/HDR. 'Cause almost every time I bring up the fact that poor HDR support is the reason why I haven’t fully switched to Linux yet, I get downvotes and people saying things like “wHaT dO yOu NeEd HDR fOr, BrUh? s.RGB Is GoOd EnOuGh!”)
I value it more on cinematic, designed and directed experiences like my movies on 4K Blu-ray than in anything I do on my PC so I guess I never really missed it on Linux. In my limited experience with Windows HDR it can be wonky too
It’s great for gaming and YouTube videos, especially gaming. That’s the main reason why I still use Windows 11 for games. (Well that, and the poor driver support from nVidia.) HDR in every game, even in those without HDR support. No other OS has this capability.
for posterity; you were at least correct in that assumption with me lol. My dream TV at a bare minimum would be 120hz, oled || many local dimming zones, supports cec, low latency.
HDR, motion smoothing, upscaling, etc… I don’t really care about any of that. My shield from 2017 still does a better job at upscaling local content than my brand new LG tv does.
My smart TV flashes a light until it has been connected to the Internet 🙃
A little bit of tape or blutack over the light.
I’m back to report my findings. I covered over the light with electrical tape, but I hit a problem. Now my remote control doesn’t work.
They’ve combined the IR sensor with the LED that flashes when there is no internet connection present. The clever bastards clearly thought of this ahead of time.
This is malicious design.
Also, if you run anything reasonably hobbiest+ for your home network, you could create an iot vlan that blocks any outgoing traffic and connect it to that. That’s what I do for all my things so I can still control them with home assistant but they can’t call outside my network.
Which brand is this? so I know to never get one lol
TCL Roku
You’re right. Might as well do it. Stop letting them harvest my data. I just hope there isn’t some sort of persistent pop up or anything annoying.
Malakas. E: I’m pretty cynical, but it’s probably less malicious and more design convenience to have a led in the ir module.
