I find these headlines all misleading.
Germany discusses for weeks now the next year’s federal budget and the ruling parties are at odds about spending and accumulation of new debts. And they agreed now, that future Ukraine aid will not come out of the federal budget.
All already approved aid to Ukraine will still be delivered. Nothing is “halted”.
All new aid, to be approved for the next fiscal year will not come from the federal budget but will be financed with seized Russian assets.
So, Germany doesn’t stop Ukraine aid at all. They just have to finance it differently in the next year.
There are only $4Bn worth of Russian assets in Germany. To date, Germany had been sending more than $10Bn per year.
Further, once those Russian assets are gone, they’re gone. Without federal budget allocations, that’s it. That’s the end of Germany aid.
They are misleading and intentionally so. Either ‘just’ as rage bait or as a genuine attempt at spreading misinformation.
There is a 4 billion budget for aid next year - which is of course excluding EU aid and aid financed via dividends of frozen russian assets.
Good, send them actual aid and not weapons to their government.
Im reluctant to ask, but i feel obligated to do so. what in your mind is the difference in this scenario?
I feel your reasoning will tell alot. Lets go.
You don’t know the difference between weapons used for terrorist attacks on civilians and food and medical aid for civilians?
What about weapons not used for terrorist attacks?
Also, sonething tells me a hoard of russian soldiers will not turn aroud by throwing bread at them.
In general I’m against giving weapons to a fascist dictatorship with an ultranationalism that’s rooted in fascist, Nazi ideology, for any purposes.
Oh those Asiatic hordes! You’re so right. We have to do something about the hordes!
Asiatic hordes? Aren’t the majority of Russians european?
Ukraine government is just as much corrupted as the government of germany, france, italy or russia. Have you seen climate activists and protesters getting beaten over there? Sending billions on military aid to an authoritarian government that is trying to conscript everyone isn’t a good thing.

“As of 26 April 2024, the Polish government has offered, and the Lithuania governments is considering, repatriating Ukrainian men living in their countries to Ukraine. So that they can be drafted into the Ukrainian military. It is a “rough estimate” that some 300-400,000 men alone are living in Poland”
This is part of how the polish government is aiding ukraine. Don’t you think it would be better to give these escaping the war aid and hospitality instead of handling them back to their government?
As part of the Axel Springer SE politico is not a credible source.
Where is the media bias fact check bot when you actually need it 😔
This is related to the Nord pipeline, right? I remember an analyst telling that Ukraine’s win is dependant on Germany, and now that is most likely not going to happen. What’s funny is that Olaf does not have the guts to call out Norway and the USA, who were also very strongly involved in this, and instead has a warrant for the Ukrainians.
Honestly I’m amazed it took this long for some blowback for blowing up infrastructure the very allies we’re begging to support our war depend on for heating.
Well, it coincides. There’s a possibility that this announcement is sending a message.
On the surface, the decision was about national debt and budget, and has nothing to do with Ukraine except that there’s no infinite money glitch.
No. Read the article instead just spewing opinions and conspiracy theories.
It’s about national debt and changing the financing of aid to Ukraine.
Nothing is halted. Future aid will not be financed by the federal budget, but from proceeds of seized russian assets.
Which is a FRACTION of what German aid was. Germany has spending around $10Bn in aid to Ukraine annually and there is only $4Bn worth of Russian assets in Germany. And not all assets have been seized. It’s also only generating, at most $1Bn in interest annually. So they can send the interest to Ukraine, or they can seize 100% of the principal and send that to Ukraine and then it’s over, because the assets will be gone. Either way, it’s tantamount to the end of Germany aid.
It’s just messed up messaging. Germany will continue to deliver all the aid that was promised and they might add new aid, but the financing will be different.
At this point it is necessary to mention Germany provides a lot.
Also to mention, maybe Germany gov should change their Pr department. These kinds of things have now became a pattern.
Have we reached the phase we are giving Ukraine weapons as loans to put them into massive debt and then the IMF swoops in to colonize their country?
What do you think the euromaidan demonstrations were (in part) about? A massive IMF loan.
You can frame it like that or you could frame it that life saving weapons are provided while wrapping financing into something the countries can digest.
Not a PR issue, a coordinated media bias issue. A great number of german media is owned in one way or another by the Springer company, and as such a small group of very rich kingmakers. The current government isnt conservative so they get the most hostile coverage imaginable, on purpose.
I didn’t know that. Can you recommend an article or something about that?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axel_Springer_SE
This is the publishing house in question. It has a decidedly conservative bias and has often been considered a sort of shadow power behind the throne with its immense reach and influence; able to significantly affect the political discourse and public opinion. You could probably compare them to the Murdoch / fox news empire in many ways.
Also to mention, maybe Germany gov should change their Pr department. These kinds of things have now became a pattern.
as a german, I totally agree. Also adding more scrutiny, and perhaps fining for lies or half-lies, regarding reporting on these topics by public media couldn’t hurt.
I am an immigrant in Germany and I have C2 German, but reading the news makes me doubt that. I swear there were articles saying legalization of marijuana was certain, then off the table, then up for vote, then failed, and then it happened but there wasn’t much news about that.
There was a piece of law that passed on weed. Here’s the wiki:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_cannabis_control_bill?wprov=sfla1
The German cannabis control bill (German: Cannabisgesetz) is a bill passed by the German Bundestag in February 2024, and the Bundesrat in March, that legalised the adult (18-years-old and over) use of cannabis in Germany, as well as the personal possession and cultivation of limited amounts of cannabis by adults in Germany, beginning on 1 April 2024. Adults in Germany are allowed to possess up to 25 grams of cannabis in public and up to 50 grams of dried cannabis at home. Each individual adult in Germany may also have up to three of their own cannabis plants at home. As part of the bill, adult-only non-profit cannabis social clubs with a maximum of 500 members will become legal in Germany from 1 July 2024.
