My grandma is good natured but not the best at critical thinking. She still uses Yahoo news, and is falling for more dumb shit they post there.
What’s a good website that I could set as her home page, one with news and stuff that’s not ideologically terrible? Doesn’t have to be all serious stuff.
She will share her recipes with the proletariat

The Onion
CGTN maybe
Unironically true.
It is the most relaxing thing to put on, especially the documentary iptv channel. Even their main news is nuanced and has real multi perspectives.
Associated Press News? When it comes to foreign affairs - they are going to have a pro-America stance but off the top of my head that site is the best I can do.
That could work. It doesn’t have a paywall either, which helps. Thanks!
AP and Reuters are both relatively fact based and no paywall
Mainline her with Breakthrough News, Fightback News, Liberation News, Means TV.
I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:
Local news station website - local news and weather
Local Newspaper website - local news
City government website - Maybe has info for senior activities
Rolling Stone magazine has pop culture and politics and is slightly left.
China’s English news websites are Xinhua, Global Times, China Daily, CGTN
Some state funded western news sites PBS, NPR, CBC, BBC, etc
Democracy Now is a decent choice for news thats paletable to a liberal but isn’t ideologically terrible. They miss sometimes but would probably fulfill the role you’re looking for.

Despite its many faults, you might consider setting up a piefed account with news, cats, and cooking. When I’ve tried it, it has been less fascist and less capitalist but more lib than various other aggregators. It is far from perfect, but reasonably grandma safe. Oh: Beehaw.org is super safe, but misses a lot of stories.
huh, interesting idea. I’ll look into it some.
I’m having a hard time answering this one, because I genuinely think that simply not watching or reading any news is probably a better choice. But I’m assuming that’s not an option, and she thinks it’s her civic duty to stay up-to-date on the news.
The least harmful option may be the homepage of her local newspaper. You’ll have to actually read it though, a lot of these will be just as brain-rotting as a national news site.
Reuters. AP. Maybe even BBC.
They’re all a bit westernised but mainly lie through omission rather than straight up dogshit.
Nah these are just as bad and very pernicious. They all do the passive voice shit and push Zionism and western chauvinism in their tone and choice of emphasis. They are extremely biased and repeat US talking points as facts. Both AP and Reuters have been caught multiple times with their top editors being literal CIA agents.
Literally any mainstream corporate news website from China or India is going to have much more grounded and realistic international news. I would recommend Al Jazeera, The Cradle, Telesur, Times of India, CGTN, etc. above any western rags
If she wants domestic and local news she is pretty out of luck if there isn’t a legacy newspaper in town. Everything else is Murdoch brain rot
True, Al Jazeera is very reliable.
As for BBC I think their domestic reporting is good but foreign policy they’re a vessel of the state. AP and Reuters definitely do repeat CIA shit too. Pernicious is definitely the word for all three and their seeming lack of ideology is the most dangerous part.
That said, I think for an older person I’d rather they read something that at least reports actual news and world affairs rather than Murdoch culture war shite. If they can make the news as boring as possible but still palatable it’s a good thing. At the end of the day they stick to news as journalism rather than a full on source of 24/7 entertainment.
I can’t speak on the rest of the ones you mentioned other than Telesur. I think you’re giving them far too much credit. I say this as someone who’s watched AP/Reuters/BBC lie about Venezuela, and then gone to Telesur for a more reliable source. I thought Telesurs journalistic standards were shoddy in terms of verifiable information - as in I couldn’t really use them in the dissertation I was writing at the time. I also felt their articles were written with a blatant ideological slant on the topics I was researchng. Do I agree with a lot of said ideology? Yes! Does it make for helpful reading in actually trying to source information? I didn’t think so.
Aljazeera.com, apnews.com, counterpunch.org, nypost.com/tag/animal-attacks/ (the only good page in ny post, it is brainrot elsewhere)
TeleSUR, PressTV, Salaamedia, CII Radio
All of these have live broadcasts in English
I’d say The Chive but I just heard on Guys they’ve stopped doing the Chivettes.
Maybe Stuff.co.nz so she can get some tech reviews and news about a place she has nothing to do with
