On paper, the recent EU-China auto deal looks like a compromise Europe needed. In reality, it is a big mistake: short-term relief for European automakers versus long-term market dominance for China.

The EU protects the hybride car market in Europe in essence protecting the ‘old’ combustible engine technology at the same not incentivizing EU car makers to go all in on Electrical Vehicles.

The future however is 100% electric, and this is where the EU car makers will lose out as they remain stuck in their old ways.

This deal shows the pressure the EU is under to get short-term relief, while at the same time not thinking about the long-term consequences.

In essence they EU has no China strategy

Very sincere question. Do human rights include poverty eradication (saving an unknowable number of lives), aggressive attempts to control the spread of covid (saving an unknowable number of lives), and removing the political power of Tibet’s reactionary clergy (saving an unknowable number of lives)? Or is this all negated because China has to have a surveillance state to prevent all of this from being undone? In your very informed opinion, what was the plausible alternative course of action that the workers of China should have taken?

Until 1959, when China cracked down on Tibetan rebels and the Dalai Lama fled to northern India, around 98% of the population was enslaved in serfdom. Drepung monastery, on the outskirts of Lhasa, was one of the world’s largest landowners with 185 manors, 25,000 serfs, 300 pastures, and 16,000 herdsmen. High-ranking lamas and secular landowners imposed crippling taxes, forced boys into monastic slavery and pilfered most of the country’s wealth – torturing disobedient serfs by gouging out their eyes or severing their hamstrings.
