I think because being really really good at chess is more about rote memorisation of various specific scenarios and moves, it doesn’t actually involve much creative or intellectual thinking at the top level, it’s just about having more stuff memorised than your opponent. So a chess grandmaster doesn’t need to know a single thing about actual strategy or systems to be great at chess.

Chess has been around for so long, it’s fallen ill to the disease of over-optimization.

There are still beautiful games that have been played in the modern day, but it feels like these professional players would rather play the safest, most advantageous moves instead of experimenting with less advantageous but more elegant / creative moves.

Mikhail Tal had the most creative games (in my opinion), he’d probably have people screaming in the arena if the matches happened today.

I wouldn’t go so far to say “a chess grandmaster doesn’t need to know a single thing about actual strategy or systems to be great at chess.” I think they just got it beaten out of them, to always play the known safest move. There have been so many times I would throw a game because I would think I played an elegant move but 5 turns later I’m regretting it.

We’re not the first ones who had this realization though…

You see this decay of optimization in most sports now. This world cup was pretty boring, there were so many 0-0 games starting out, some LOSERS probably calculated that the delta of winning increased by 0.052829% if you play like a coward and now everyone follows along.

Same happened to basketball, it’s disgustingly boring now, every team follows the same protocols it feels like.

Women’s sports though? That stuff has been peak recently, WNBA games are pretty exciting to watch, I feel similar excitement for NWSL games, and the teams all feel like they have that 80s experimentation going on, cool font designs, sick jerseys, their PR is amazing, like Washington Spirit vs Gotham FC is being called “District vs Empire” and the flyers / in-stadium events seem dope as heck.

I know the rot of over-optimization will eventually affect the NWSL though, so I’m enjoying it while it lasts.

Even video games get affected by it. I used to play a disgusting amount of Teamfight Tactics, until websites and helper overlays destroyed all the fun you could have.

It went from playing the best comp you could have with the cards dealt to you, where the better player wins, to every player following the same team comps that their overlay tells them to play, meaning that really the only differentiating factor is luck.
