I think because being really really good at chess is more about rote memorisation of various specific scenarios and moves, it doesn’t actually involve much creative or intellectual thinking at the top level, it’s just about having more stuff memorised than your opponent. So a chess grandmaster doesn’t need to know a single thing about actual strategy or systems to be great at chess.
Kasparov got personally boned by USSR politicians early in his career (and pro chess players don’t care about anything that’s not the game), so I think he holds a grudge against all Russian leadership
