I was just listening to a podcast today that was pointing out that the need to talk about things like ranch dressing and insist that the US has good food is another sign of American decline and trying to fight the loss of any cultural influence/soft power.

the need to talk about things like ranch dressing and insist that the US has good food

Anyone who can only come up with ranch as the only/main example of American cuisine is a racist. Chicano and tex-mex food are American, Louisiana food is American, all black American cuisine is American, indigenous nations food is American. In their mind America = white, so non-white foods couldn’t possibly be American. They’re telling on themselves so hard.

This gives of the same vibes as “falafel and hommus is israeli food”

Falafels and hummus were created far before israel existed, and theres nothing culturally “israeli” abt either. Chicano and tex-mex food developed in the US, and are recognizably different than just mexican food, tho theres ofc a lot of influence going in both directions. That is why its ridiculous to call the former “israeli” food while the latter is american food

I knew the food existed before israel, but i dont know much about chicano and tex mex, seems like mexican food made more palatable for white americans, like the dim sims made for white australians by Chinese immigrants

That can still be it’s own cuisine/dish though. For example, Japanese curry is based on Indian cuisine but is quite different. Or in India there is Indo-Chinese food which is not actually Chinese food.

Admittedly idk much abt chicano cuisine either, but reducing a whole culinary tradition to just “another tradition but made palatable to white ppl” seems stupid

americans go 🥺 when they try real raw tomato in europe, so i have severe doubts

*i assume normal tomatoes must exist in usa, but seems like average vegetable is a bit on watery side, to grow faster or store better

Agreed, the U.S. does not sell decent tomatoes in any of its regular stores, but good tomatoes can be found in speciality places, farm stands, and back yards. Same goes for strawberries, raspberries, and lots of other produce.

Most of the Spanish glasshouse tomatoes that are grown to supply supermarkets across Europe suck too.

Some stores carry heirloom varieties, but for the most part, you’re limited to mealy tomato-flavored water balloons, questionable romas, and an unspecified on-the-vine species that probably spent two weeks on the back of a truck.

It’s worse the further you get from logistics hubs or actual growing areas, and even worse when they’re out of season. Italian Hell is being force-fed “beefsteak” tomatoes in rural North Dakota in November.

Thinking that ranch dressing and French fries is the height of culinary excellence really shows how unadventurous one is with food. American cuisine is so fucking boring that I almost never cook it at home.

it takes a real horse’s ass to talk about texas bbq as a evidence of the US’ sophisticated food culture, when Carolina bbq is the true heir of west african foodways’ collision post-Columbian Exchange.

texas bbq is for baby mouths who won’t eat their dinner unless mommy dumps a heap of sugar on the plate.
