My favorite is on old Fender tube amps where they had a ground polarity switch from the days before 3-prong grounded plugs, and the switch was wired to a fucking death cap that went straight to chassis ground and could still kill you during repairs and service with the amp having been shut off for months.

Tube amps my beloved. Friend of mine wanted to repair one and thankfully he talked to me about it bc he had no idea their capacitors were like that

Oh yes. You learn to stand there like an orchestra conductor with one hand behind your back and either a chopstick or a multimeter probe in the other for ye olde jiggery-pokery.

Or not. It’s all “call of the void” to me at this point, lol

It really is. I’ve been (re-?)learning how to do repairs on them lately, and it’s wild poking around in a running amp and seeing some of the voltage potentials in there, but then you get to the heater filaments and it’s only like 6.3 volts. But if you have less than that (really more like 5.0-5.5 volts before it’s noticeable), your warm-up doesn’t work and the electrons don’t jump and your tubes are just paperweights.

At the risk of being attacked by the anti car mob I also like that ticking noise cars make when warming up in frosty weather or cooling down when turned off.

I don’t know what it is about warm up and cool down cycles but they give little pleasant moments of peace in most things.

More electronics need more switches and dials and cool shutdown noises. I want to flick a switch and hear a nice “Peeewwwwwwmmm” as the device turns off, and I should get to twist more dials and flick several switches to power things on, all these touch screens are too sterile, I want a more tactile experience.

I love it, I have powered speakers I use for guitar amp modeling/ to deafen myself in my room, and they on for a few seconds after turning them off and it’s so fucking satisfying
