Trump on Hasan Piker:

Hasan Piker is a terrible liability for the Democratic Party.

He is a communist — there’s no question about it.

This idea that everything that happens outside in the real world needs to be posted into the slop comm is detrimental to the website. The slop comm was intended to be a place for things that are so offensive that it harms people. Now almost everything is posted in the slop comm. It is the second largest comm and growing. The slop comm is not serving its intended purpose of protecting users from actually harmful content.

Donald Trump is the president of the United States. Hasan Piker is a friend of Chapo Trap House. This is Chapo Trap House comm. Neither of the subjects are so offensive that they need to be quarantined. The president of the united states beefing with a twitch streamer is a notable subject of discussion and related to the Chapo Trap House universe.

Hasan’s twitch stream was basically a spin-off show from the Chapo podcast. Chapo promoted Hasan in 2019. Felix Biederman is a good friend of Hasan. Felix helped launch Hasan’s twitch audience by co-streaming Fortnite in 2018.

Are you Chapo Trap House? Why are you saying that a friend of the podcast shouldn’t be discussed in a community focused on the podcast?

I guarantee you, most newcomers to the site don’t even know or care to know what the hell a “chapo trap house” even is, this comm might as well be the equivalent of a main channel in a Discord server.

Hasan is the current face of the slop comm for a reason, it’s one struggle session after another for a fucking Twitch streamer on this site.

Do you always talk about yourself in the third person? >most newcomers to the site don’t even know or care to know what the hell a “chapo trap house”

Also you contradict yourself. You say that the chapo trap house comm isn’t about chapo trap house, but that the slop comm must be about hasan because it has a picture of hasan. Those are 2 opposing statements.

The reason that Hasan is the photo of the slop comm is that it was changed recently and I think that the mods admire him. That’s why they chose a shirtless photo. Half the website is lusting after him. It’s like when a teenager puts a poster of their celebrity crush on their bedroom wall.

Also Hasan is the reason why that comm is called slop and not because it’s about him. It’s because Hasan calls refers to maga supporters as “hogs” and hasan had a segment called “hog watch”. Several posters suggested that the comm be named “hog watch” or “hog trough” and the mods chose the name “slop”, a spin on hog trough, which then the word slop became overused in mainstream culture.

I saw the slop community icon was broken so chose that picture since it had his dog in it and was shirtless which I thought captures the slop vibe.

I don’t watch him and am tangentially aware of his many antics from posts on this site, so I wouldn’t call myself a fan.

When we were closing the dunk tank there was a post that opened up the namechoice to the sitebase and slop was chosen.

You are welcome to make a post in !hexbear@hexbear.net discussing the slop community and how posts are organized into communities here so that we can have a more robust discussion rather than a buried comment chain

Thank you for replying to my comment. I have previously made a post about /c/slop being too broad in the feedback comm, 16 months ago. I think nobody saw it because the feedback comm is local to the hexbear instance and nobody seems to read the feedback comm. I try to write my post in agreement with things you wrote in previous announcement posts. https://hexbear.net/post/4820530

My general feeling now is that slop is trying to be a replacement to chapotraphouse. I’m guessing you are familiar with the format of chapo trap house podcast, being that you are the admin of the site which took the place of the chapo subreddit.

What is the spirit of the Chapo Trap House podcast? It’s a podcast which discusses cultural events, US politics and electoralism, US foreign policy, etc. There was even a recurring segment where Will Menaker would read newspaper columns written by like reactionaries and he would provide context about the author and criticize and so on.

Increasingly all of these things are being posted into the slop comm, which was intended to be a comm of screenshots of bad tweets and reddit comments. I believe thedunktank was originally created by a user who wanted a comm similar to r/shitliberalssay. Now, every day I am seeing news articles and celebrity gossip and even actions of politicians being posted into the slop comm.

Today, I saw a post in the slop comm which showed a screenshot of a video where a journalist did an investigation into the decreased in food quality of fast food restaurants. The post title criticized the journalist for expecting fast food restaurants to serve quality food. It’s clear that the poster didn’t watch the video, probably didn’t even take the screenshot themselves, probably just re-uploaded the screenshot from reddit.

Posts like that makes me wonder: Is it slop for a journalist to do an investigation into price gouging at fast food restaurants? Or is it slop for someone to repost a screenshot from reddit of a video thumbnail that they didn’t even watch? A characteristic of slop is being low effort. Which thing is low effort? Is the post meant to be pretentious? Am I expected to believe that most people on Hexbear don’t ever eat at fast food restaurants?

My non-confrontational solution has been to repost news articles into the proper comm if they are posted into slop. I don’t want confrontation. I’m not trying to be a debater, like some people have suggested. I only replied to this commenter to explain why I don’t think my post belongs in the slop comm.

One time I remember doing this was when there was the shooting at the White House Correspondence Dinner. I was watching a live feed of the event, when I heard someone mentioning the gunshots. I found a news article around 10 minutes later and posted it into the News comm. Around the same time, someone else posted another article about the shooting into the slop comm. To me, this incident was a meaningful event and was in the news cycle for at least a week afterward. However, somebody else believed that a shooting incident near the White House deserved to be posted in a comm which was intended to be screenshots of reactionaries posting on social media. That does not make sense.

Some people may point out that this post is a screenshot of a tweet. While this is technically true. I was watching the White House press conference live stream on youtube and searched the clip on a news clip twitter account, because it is easier to share than a youtube live stream.

To reference one of your previous announcements, you suggested that there be a comm called “counterpropaganda”, which was created but didn’t really take off. I don’t know if that comm was your idea or the idea of another moderator. I think that the comm was a really good concept. I like the idea of promoting a more meaningful, critical discussion. I like when people read the article and comment a meaningful analysis.

I feel like the slop comm promotes a surface level discussion. Earlier I wrote that I like the chapo podcast because they provide meaningful commentary and also that I like when when hexbear commenters make meaningful analysis. When things are posted into the slop comm that aren’t social media posts screenshots, the intention is to assert that the subject is bad and to create a tone of condescension. The posts often have sarcastic title and lack context or analysis.

Over a year ago, I requested the creation of the popularculture comm. I intended for the comm to be a semi-formal discussion of the possible material impacts of cultural trends, celebrities, and entertainment. I made many posts on the comm and I think the comm is relatively active. After I created the popularculture comm, I noticed that users were more frequently posting pop culture articles into the slop comm, a comm which is intended for screenshots of liberal opinions posted on social media. Why would people post celebrity articles into the wrong comm after I made a comm for celebrity-related articles? It feels spiteful, when some of those users had never posted such article before the popularculture comm existed.

My preference is that the slop comm should be limited to screenshots of harmful opinions posted on social media, which was the comm’s original purpose. When something is posted into the slop comm which isn’t a screenshot of an opinion posted on social media, it should be removed. I’m not sure if there’s any other way people will stop posting literally everything into the slop comm. It feels like slop is becoming /c/main.

Individual comms could be made to criticize and analyze different types of reactionary thought. A comm which focuses on criticizes/discusses trends of right-wing-media would have a different analysis than a comm which discusses democrat-electoralism. Maybe there could be a comm which focuses on being anti-NATO/anti-NAFO. I think that having more specific categories would promote a deeper level of discussion.

Sorry for the excessively long comment. I’m not intending to argue or disagree with you. I tried to write this comment in a way that agrees with your previous announcement posts.

Sorry for the delayed reply. I wanted to take some time to think about it more so that I don’t create controversy or confusion. I can make a post in /c/hexbear for a discussion of a proposal. I would like to propose that slop posts must showcase social media posts, as stated in its original purpose. The original comm request says that the comm was intended to showcase social media posts.

Most of the posts on the slop comm already meet this requirement. It is things being posted into the comm like news articles, op-eds, videos of politicians speaking, images of food, etc that do not meet that definition.

                https://hexbear.net/post/830

A SRS-style community dedicated to showcasing the worst of reactionaries across all social media, including Reddit.

EDIT: The community will be named !TheDunkTank.

          downbear

I didn’t “contradict” myself, I said it “might as well be” I don’t see people posting exclusively updates about the pod, also I never said the slop comm is exclusively for Hasan, if someone started posting about Assmold (what? He’s UNFORTUNATELY also “relevant” to American politics) or some other freak they’d be told to fuck off to the slop comm

I don’t want to see anything of that asshole anywhere nor his little army of fans, I had my fill of him, I’ve never once seen him apologise for any of his personal faults, and after the Platner worship I drew the line. I unfollowed him on every place, I do not care about the Democratic Party’s Twitch Daddy.

And people complain about this site not being able to retain new members, I wonder why.

You raise a lot of interesting questions, like: why do hexbears have shirtless photos of Hasan but not shirtless photos of Asmongold? Why isn’t the slop comm a shirtless photo of Asmongold?

Also you assert that Hexbear doesn’t receive new users because hexbears are supportive of Hasan. Why then is Hasan’s community so much larger than Hexbear? Hexbear was created at the same time that Hasan started streaming and the communities were the same size. Now Hasan millions of fans, some who say he inspired them to engage in activism, and Hexbear still seems smaller than when it was a subreddit. It must be Hasan that is holding back Hexbear’s growth? Could it be that Hasan made his community have focus on optimism while communities like /c/slop are built on pessimism?

You don’t have to like Hasan. There are even many people in Hasan’s community who criticize him. I said that it hurts the website to say that everything that you don’t like should be posted into the slop comm. I think it’s totally fine that you don’t like Hasan. My point is that comms other than /c/slop are allowed to have posts that you don’t like.

Holy debate pervertry, let’s both wrap it up I’m not interested in solo struggle sessions

You raise a lot of interesting questions, like: why do hexbears have shirtless photos of Hasan but not shirtless photos of Asmongold? Why isn’t the slop comm a shirtless photo of Asmongold?

Haha lmao, okay dude you win gg based you got me you owned me so hard man wow, keep on keeping on hope you get a giftie sub tonight

              internet-delenda-est

Why then is Hasan’s community so much larger than Hexbear?

It’s almost as if streams are a more entertaining and interactive medium than niche forums, I’ve seen it constantly be mentioned here by Hasan fans that he intentionally has more soft politics to appeal to his wide American audiance, as compared to being a hard-liner, which would not have the same appeal for Americans for obvious reasons.

He streams everyday, at a very specific time, you get a little alert when he streams if you follow him as you know, people make a habit of watching, I don’t blame them he can be funny, like you said he’s been at it for years, it’s only natural for him to be huge

some who say he inspired them to engage in activism

That’s good, he gets a point for that, I’m not a mindless hater. I genuinely hope his fans put their energy to good things instead praying to the Dems to magic out communism out of their sleeves next election, like some do.

It must be Hasan that is holding back Hexbear’s growth?

I literally never said that, please stop.

There are even many people in Hasan’s community who criticize him.

I stopped watching largely because he never bothers to correct his mistakes, he’s very open about his faults but, like he says, he has an “addictive personality” he doesn’t like to admit he’s wrong, you can’t tell me that’s not true, he belittles people who raise genuine concerns (see: Platner situation). Some deserve it, others don’t, it’s fucked up when he lumps the two groups together.

Again, just like he says when he is questioned by chatters about why pundits (like Shapiro for example) do what they do, he explains: trying to find out the precise reasoning behind their actions is a waste of energy, the output they generate is what matters.

So be it, I’ll go off that, he knows he has handled things poorly at times or he has blind spots (everyone does), but he doesn’t do much to change that, he just carries on and acknowledges he’s imperfect instead of trying to better himself only slightly, I’m not asking for miracles I just hate seeing him do that over and over again, I’m in other communities where this exact point has been brought up many times, nothing has changed.

I don’t know what is the point of 80% of the communities here. I blocked the ones on topics that harm me, and I barely look at which community something is posted in, because it provides almost no context to the post. All this to say that the organization here is terrible, partially due to overlapping and unclear communities, but also due to the Lemmy limitation of being unable to move posts.
