Scary Cubans! Never know when they might take a potshot at you.
I tried to look up if there ever were any shootings into the occupied territory, and the only thing I could find was this 1964 NYT article about US soldiers shooting Cubans

seems to me the plot only really works dramatically if communism makes you absolutely shit your pants in terror. to the extent that the climactic “YOU NEED ME ON THAT WALL!” relies on that fear
The plot doesn’t rely on any paticular view of communism and Cuba could have been substituted with any enemy border. You’re not supposed to be sympathetic to the Colonel’s diatribe, it’s about him being undone by his ego.
I guess, Cuba just doesn’t read as a realistic threat and didn’t even back in 1992
It doesn’t need to be. Again the Colonel is meant to be read as having an inflated ego bordering on having delusions of grandeur, he is exaggerating the threat to elevate his own importance. Even Sorkin knows Cuba isn’t going to invade the US.
then doesn’t the above scene undermine that by showing that other officers and underlings have the same exaggerated unrealistic sense of the threat?
These are people who are under the Colonel’s command. The central theme of the move is the impact of a cultivated culture within the military and the leadership’s responsibility for this culture.
The protagonists are dissapproving of and frequently mocking this culture through out the movie (Moore calling them fanatics, Cruise doing impressions of the colonel etc).
This movie is unrealistic in that it has a politically powerful person held materially accountable by the law for his role in killing a common marine. It’s a liberal fantasy where the system works and the wonks beat the crass strong men.
To view this movie as endorsing the Colonel’s diatribe is such a naive misread that I made a joke about Hegseth doing it a month ago.
I just don’t know how you could come to that conclusion unless you haven’t actually seen the movie and are guessing based on watching the one iconic scene on youtube or are
.
