I love waffles :3 easily my favorite breakfast food. Developing different recipes has been so much fun! Lately I’ve been having one with lots of ground flaxseed and it has been keeping me quite regular. I’ll have one or two of those in the morning with some tofu breakfast/lunch “meat” and a bit of cheapo syrup. There also was a version with pea protein powder that worked out pretty well but I neglected to write down the recipe, oops.

Vegan waffle recipe

Dry mix:

1 cup white flour (see note)

2-3 tablespoons ground flaxseed

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking powder

Optional add-in: 1-2 teaspoon powdered cinnamon or blend of “sweet” spices.

Mix until combined

Wet ingredients:

1 cup plant milk (see notes)

1 tablespoon neutral tasting cooking oil

Optional add in: 1/2 tablespoon breakfast syrup or granulated sugar[1]

Whisk wet ingredients together vigorously, if using granulated sugar whisk until it is dissolved.

Once wet ingredients are combined add the dry ingredients and mix until combined but still slightly lumpy. Allow the batter to sit for at least five minutes so the flaxseed can hydrate. Batter keeps well overnight if refridgerated in an airtight container and stirred before using.

Portions and waffle iron operation will vary by, consult the manual or wing it carefully.

Notes:

  • This recipe may take longer to cook fully compared to other mixes. Ultimately the steam produced by the cooking process is always an accurate indicator of doneness.

  • The dry mix can be made well ahead of time, a double batch fits nicely into a 32 oz deli container.

  • Adjusting the amount of plant milk will make the waffles more or less dense, experiment and adjust to preferences. Personally I use 1/2 cup plant milk with 2/3 cup dry mix because it makes two dense, filling waffles.

  1. This adds some flavor, but more importantly I have found that this helps a lot with getting the outside crispy ↩︎

    vent cw: parent, invasiveness, dysphoria

I hate that my dad knows I’m trans now. Its been eating me alive since.

It was the one thing precious to me and only shared with those who its safe to know but now its gone.

Why did he, as soon as knowing I’m trans, barrage me with questions trying to suck everything that is personal out of me. He has always done this, he doesn’t understand boundaries or that I should have privacy. Leave my sexuality alone, my genitals alone, my name alone, my IDs alone, just leave me alone FFS.

Everytime He tries to ‘help me’ he always hurts me then gets confused as to why I hate what he has done to me.

I want to change my name but how the fuck can I now? I don’t want to live as my deadname with him and whatever name I choose with everyone else. I don’t want to be scared of how I look around him, I already lived that life and never want to go back.

I don’t even live with him and I feel miserable, fucking why???

      cw relational conflict

Some people have that power, regrettably. If you’re unsafe enough for long enough the stench doesn’t come off. “Not” “understanding” boundaries is about the most noxious behavior there is.

The only thing I’ve found to help for somebody who makes me feel like I’m suffocating like that has been to cut them out of my life, but it’s not so easy to do when it’s family. It’s still possible, but it’s more complicated. I’ve been reckoning with the aftermath of severing a relationship like that for a little more than a year (married into it!) and I don’t wake up full of dread anymore. It’s nice. Still weird severing contact with someone like that but it’s night and day better now.

I don’t have good answers. Do whatever you can do to keep yourself safe. Take some time. Go for a walk or something else to clear your mind. Whatever you can do to build those walls, do it. You can expect his behavior to get significantly worse if you don’t back down but eventually either you get out or they give up. My sympathy and my solidarity.

That ends up describing what living with either of my parents was like pretty much exactly. The stench doesn’t leave.

I’m disconnected from most of my family but my dad is the only one I still have a connection to and unfortunately I’m still somewhat reliant on him. But that only works because of some boundaries set up after something really heavy I went through some time back. Not something that should ever be repeated to build boundaries again.

Your advice is probably what’s best to do, just keep myself safe and prepared for what’s next. Its not easy what to say next because family are difficult to deal with.

You could pick a real new name that everyone else uses, and a second one that you only have him use.

When I came out to my family, I was using they/them, and I never told them when I changed again. It feels more comfortable to have a separate set of pronouns for them to use that aren’t my real ones, but also aren’t dysphoric.
