Honestly butterfly-style maps should be the default, you can tell shape, size, position, cardinal direction all relatively well, there’s no major distortions, and Pacific-centered, Atlantic-centered, and north-down versions all work fine.

Waterman Butterfly is obviously the correct choice. It’s symmetrical!
