Let’s highlight Autoimmune Diseases [or Disorders] this week:
- Autoimmune diseases include a broad category of related diseases in which the person’s immune system attacks their own tissue with symptoms that can vary from mild to severely affecting daily life
- Autoimmune disorders are chronic (ongoing) illnesses; there are no cures, only treatments and symptom management
- In many cases autoimmune disorders are inherited, but it is not known why some people have them
- AD are frequently classified into organ-specific and non-organ-specific types, though some of them fall between the two
- Patients can experience multiple organ-specific diseases at the same time
- Sources vary on an exact number of autoimmune disorders, but the current numbers ranges from 80 -140+ different types and can prove difficult to diagnose
- Autoimmune diseases and their effects on mortality and morbidity are significant
- Everyone experiences their illness differently
The Global Autoimmune Institute and the Autoimmune Association have a non-comprehensive, searchable database of autoimmune diseases.

As always, we ask that in order to participate in the weekly megathread, one self-identifies as some form of disabled, which is broadly defined in the community sidebar:
“Disability” is an umbrella term which encompasses physical disabilities, emotional/psychiatric disabilities, neurodivergence, intellectual/developmental disabilities, sensory disabilities, invisible disabilities, and more. You do not have to have an official diagnosis to consider yourself disabled.
Mask up, love one another, and stay alive for one more week.

There is one point where I think medical cynicism benefits patients, but it’s not like in a huge way. Still. If you’re ever worried about saying something embarrassing or shameful to your doctor, absolutely don’t be. Don’t worry one bit. They may laugh to themselves later, or they tell your story to the other medical professionals, but they will absolutely not give a singular fuck that it was you who said it. They will not remember that, or care. If you tell your doctor that you once stuck a thing of toothpaste up your butt because you wanted it to smell minty, they’re gonna tell that story, but they will not remember your name, your face, or any other details about you, and the only detail that will get passed around is that a thing of toothpaste was up someone’s butt.
I was listening to doctors swap stories yesterday, which included two people swapping similar stories, wondering whether it was the same patient, and then realising neither one could remember literally anything else about the patient.
That is definitely reassuring to hear, and I also think it’s a very human thing to share these parts of their story. You face a lot of shit each day in the medical profession, there needs to be an outlet. As far as talking about other people in their absence goes, this is one of the things I can accept.
Do you happen to remember any funny stories you heard or experienced?
Oh I have a bunch already. Uhh. Let’s see. Hmm. I don’t want to violate anyone’s medical privacy obviously, or just privacy in general. So I’m gonna keep it as unidentifiable as possible. Let’s go with the wildest story first.
We had a person who got stabbed who was delivered to the hospital by their partner. The partner was besides themselves with worry, but had to be asked to stay outside the patient’s room and away from the patient in general once it was discovered that it was they who stabbed the patient. One of the doctors (There was debate) called the cops, who arrested the partner while they were pacing around waiting for news from surgery. Once the patient was ready to be discharged, they were mighty upset, because the partner had been their ride home.
Also, the partner did not have a driver’s license and was married to someone else. This is wild indeed, holy shit

During the he heatwave some of the hospitals in the area were handing out popsicles and ice cream to staff, but not to patients.
So imagine a child, waiting for someone to pick them up, they’ve been sitting there for a really long time and they’re obviously uncomfortable and they don’t know anyone and nobody is talking to them.
Imagine a doofus thinking this is their chance to be a good samaritan, imagine some doofus “stealing” a popsicle for that child, imagine that child being mad because it wasn’t one of the good flavours (Cola is apparently much, much better than grape), then imagine their mom shows up and gets mad at said doofus for giving their kid sugar.
I have heard someone say something once that stuck with me for situations of the kind, which is if you ever see someone doing something weird or embarassing in the street, a week later you may remember what they did but most likely not their face
If you tell your doctor that you once stuck a thing of toothpaste up your butt because you wanted it to smell minty,
I never even thought about that, woah. Minty fresh ass… and a trip to the doctor.
CW: Depression, some gross imagery (not pictures, just words) and maybe a little suicidal ideation
I feel like a rotten fruit that people are keeping in their kitchen for some reason?? Just throw me out with the trash, I’m no good no more. My skills are getting you sick and infecting the rest of your fruit. Maybe I was good at some point, but that was a while ago, and now I’m good for nothing. I’m just so tired. My symptoms keep getting worse, and the psych doctor doesn’t seem to know what to do. “I’ll try to convince Medicaid to get your injection appointments closer together.” Ma’am, I’m having symptoms clear through the injection time. At best I get a day or two of relief. I’m half tempted to just quit meds altogether so at least I feel like I have my whole brain while I’m in the shit. I’m just ready to head to the landfill and rot in peace. But for some reason that’d make people I care about sad, and I don’t want to do that…

I totally understand this. People virtue signal about being against assisted suicide, caring so much about the disabled but they’ll torture us for decades keeping us alive in this state.
So my mom’s friend has a six year old daughter that’s, well, kinda adorable!
Yeah children can be overstimulating, but I do have that parental instinct thing going on.
Mentioning her to an acquaintance and getting shot down with “I don’t do kids” is a uh… Little disappointing.
I know the feeling! A friend has a really wonderful child too and I love talking about them. I don’t want kids of my own but they are so adorable to spend time with.
It’s sad when other people don’t want to listen to something you enjoy, no matter the topic.
Taking a shift tomorrow. Don’t wanna Need money for meds
My new pharmacist is super nice. She tries to give me advice on meds and how to avoid side effects, and that is probably useful to many.
Good luck with your shift.

I really like your pharmacist. Moments when someone who’s actually knowledgeable goes out of their way to help you with a specific problem are really what makes me believe in humanity. It’s hard to see that we actually are a pretty cool species who’s capable of helping each other. Thanks for sharing this.
Finding nice pharmacists are as rare as unicorns these days, hope your shift went well
It went ok. Took one of the shifts that pay extra because they can’t get anyone to work them. Was pretty chill.
I’m fucking unemployable.
I ace every technical assessment, my work when I’m focused is great. I’m a ticketed journeyperson who can get hired on that simple fact alone.
I have been fired from so many companies. I cannot get into a routine. My ADHD is so severe when i finally saw a specialist they said it might be one of the worst cases they’ve seen and were surprised at how far i got in my career unmedicated for 30+ years.
Even medicated I struggle to follow schedules and struggle to give 2 shits about the rules. I leave early because my brain cannot handle being on the job anymore.
Does anyone care that i got more done while i was here than most other workers did in the day? (not a brag, just in relation to an employer’s expectations) no, I’m reprimanded for not giving even more of my labour power away for essentially free.
Oh someone said i took an hour for lunch? What did that person do today? No they’re more valuable because they act as your eyes and ears for disciplinary actions…
Fuck working. Fuck bills.
I got hired the same day i got fired. The only thing keeping my family above water is the decision i made to actually get my ticket. If i was unlucky enough to be in an uncertified trade or career I’d be a pariah and have to move away
I can’t even fake it. When a supervisor catches me slipping i sometimes won’t even get back to work. I have no respect for authority which might sound cool but it’s not fucking good for my quality of life.
My buddies are saying I could get an achievement for being let go from every mechanical insulation company in the province and they’re not far off
My teacher in trade school said i was the fastest at doing math of anyone he’d met before. I got perfect scores on everything.
Doesn’t matter because school isn’t 8 hours of production a day
I’m so frustrated by how difficult everything always has to be. I have wanted, for ages, to apply for a Blue Badge, it gives disabled people some benefits like priority parking, various concessions and legal protections. But it’s so difficult to apply for. I don’t have any of the allowed methods of ID, you have to provide a ton of evidence and I don’t feel I have the strength to go around begging doctors and collecting all this crap again, especially since my old GPs have all retired and all we have now are a revolving door of locums who never respond to messages, you need proof of address within 3 months which I don’t have, and all kinds of other crap. Everything in life is just firewalled by an overwhelming amount of bureaucracy now, it’s too exhausting to deal with.
This is definitely one of the things so many people underestimate when it comes to getting ‘help’ with disabilities. It ends up an endless maze of difficulties and ostracism. I’m sorry it sucks so much. Has your landlady’s awful family left yet? Sending you some peace and quiet, love. Hope you can find some time to rest and disconnect for a little while.
They’re due to leave on Friday evening. I’m very much looking forward to it!
I hadn’t intended to make another post so soon, but I saw this:
https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/40022943/mum-drags-cop-disabled-avoids-jail/
A policeman’s knee was injured while trying to arrest someone and he’s now not fit for active service. His biggest complaint about this? Not the pain he must be in, not the fact he can no longer do things he wants. No, his biggest complaint is "He was left with permanent injuries to his knee and can no longer work on frontline duties. The officer also said the burden he believes he is placing on others was the equivalent of ”living a death sentence.”
We live in such a sick capitalist society that if you’re injured at work and can no longer do everything you used to, your biggest worry is that you’re now a burden on society. And no wonder, since society does treat the disabled as a burden.
I can only agree with you, I firmly believe nobody should think of themselves as a burden because of a disability.
(This doesn't need a CW afaik but it's dark so I'm putting it in spoilers)
I will say, however, that “an Afghanistan war hero” - cop kinda sounds like he deserved being dragged along the road for multiple car lengths.
Yeah he probably did. And from his comment about being a burden I’m guessing he’s one of those people who has always thought of the disabled as a burden.
I’m so tired, lemme just lay here on the floor for a bit.
rambling update, just getting things off my chest
Been wildly busy with work and personal stuff lately.
After 2 years of waiting and being turned away four different times, I finally got another covid shot, but it’s the older one since the '25-26 vaccines are either out of stock or just completely unavailable with no production currently in the works, according to the guy I spoke to. The first pharmacy I went to wanted $224 usd for the vaccine, so it took a few days to finally find a place that took my shitty insurance, and I didn’t know it was the old version til I arrived. The pharmacist said it was looking grim for any new vaccines at this point, and I felt his despair in my soul when he shared that. He did say it’s better than nothing; this one still counts as a booster.
Haven’t talked about them much but the older couple I help out with have had a lot of in person doc visits that they’ve needed a lot of assistance with, so I’ve been running them around the last few weeks. The wife’s kidneys are struggling after the years of chemo from her cancer treatments and she has to have tests done every month. We found out recently, after some obvious decline, that the husband has substantial markers for Alzheimer’s, which explains a lot but it’s still hard to get that news and knowing what will eventually happen. Hopefully he qualifies for a new drug that can help mitigate symptoms, but we’re still waiting on some tests. They’ll be needing my help more and more, and I just hope I can keep the energy and mental capacity to help where I can.
Work is…awful lol. So many Americans are by and large terrible people, and it’s both maddening and traumatizing dealing with the public, especially older folks. 90% of the calls I take are from the 50+ crowd and shit is bleak. Masking for work drains my energy so badly I end up nearly comatose on the weekends.
Hope everyone is hanging in there okay, sending hugs for any who need one.
I am thoroughly amazed at how you manage to keep going with this big of a load on your shoulders.
I’m very sorry to hear about the elderly couple you’re looking after, it sounds like they already have it rough, but with Alzheimer’s it sounds like it’s not going to become easier. I hope you can maintain the strength and endurance you have for them, but don’t forget that you are also just human; you need breaks, especially when everything else is too much. Take care of yourself sweetie, alright? I believe in you.

And work really does sound like a nightmare, urgh.
The covid thing is terrifying, plain and simple. I’m glad you got a booster, I don’t think I can even get one here, at least not easily.
Thanks, love

Viktor Reznov: “To your last breath: FIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!”
My weird allergy problems have been getting significantly worse recently.
They’ve been getting worse for years with more and more things causing reactions but I had such an awful time with doctors not caring about or believing me when I first started having issues ive just been trying to deal with it on my own for like 7 years now.
I think it’s too much for me to handle on my own now but im afraid ill try and get help and get the same reaction as before, or get scammed by some “specialist” that preys on people needing help for complex health issues, or they’ll figure out whats wrong but treatment doesnt help or there is no treatment, or ill actually get help and itll be so expensive and fully out of pocket that my entire paycheck will be dedicated to paying for something that should be free.
I need to do another elimination diet in the meantime but there’s a few things in my adoptive parents house that I’m allergic to that could mess with the results and I hate having to eat so much meat for the early stages of it.
When things weren’t so bad I was trying to go vegan and now that feels impossible

My hummus/shredded carrots/fried onions/beansprouts/fried silken tofu/cucumber and potato crisps sandwich is built in part as a thought experiment on food texture sensitivity exposure and in part because it would be fun to eat. Thanks @Acute_Engles@hexbear.net
I am not gonna need to eat anything else today . Honestly I may be in a calorie surplus for the week
Glad i could help
If I had a nickel for every time Sarah Anderson made a comic that misunderstood the basic function of major organs and in which the punchline is her anxiety disorder, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.
I’m making a texture sandwich. I’m putting as many weird textures in it as possible. Suggestions welcome.
Fried onions, beansprouts, zucchini
Ngl sounds almost like a full dish
Oooh. Good suggestions.
I have suspected myself of having an autoimmune disorder for a while, I get tired so easily, it is hard to game past an hour now. I could never play past 2-3 hours as a teen when others could play for nearly 7, but that led to realisation that I will never be able to work like others, I will always be the outsider, the one who can’t dine past midnight, one who needs more sleep, one who needs less loud music.
I could never play past 2-3 hours as a teen when others could play for nearly 7
Ew, people actually play video games for up to seven hours?
I will honestly admit that I’ve spend entire weekends gaming through just one game non-stop. I do take food and bathroom breaks, but playing for 12+ hours stops being fun if you do it too often. The first couple of times though? Absolute fun!

oh is that an auto immune disorder thing… cos same on all counts, i love sleeping for 12 hours everyday and then wondering why i dont have enough time to do anything
From my research yea
They can be so hard to get diagnosed, as well, and it was really eye opening realizing just how many different autoimmune disorders are out there and still not well understood.
I know it sucks to be othered and/or inhibited by our disabilities but I hope you know it doesn’t make you any lesser of a human and you deserve to have accommodations and access to support when you need it. We all deserve better than what we’ve been given. Solidarity, comrade.
Thanks a lot comrade, it becomes hard to keep in sight that I am a human too when even other comrades have a eugencist understanding of disability. Thank you so much for your solidarity comrade.
Only here to mirror what un_mask_me said, you are very human, and you are beautiful the way you are.

I appreciate you so much, way more than you realise

hugs back tightly
My flavor of small talk be like:
-Ranting about people buying the store’s entire inventory and flipping through hundreds of coupons at checkout✅
-Talking about the weather ❌
I have stopped the quetiapine for two reasons:
1.) The side effects are ASS and the potential future chronic side effects from chronic exposure as also ASS.
2.) Was put on it because I had a blow up with my family, which boiled down to my mom being an asshat who never listens to me. (And she wonders why I get belligerent!) Was doing bog standard before being on it.
Well, except for the awful living conditions and being stuff living with my awful terrible mom of course! Antipsychotics won’t magic that away.
I’m not risking my own health just because my mom is all like “Qwerty will my little twit that demean, use as a metaphorical stress ball, and does whatever I tell him to do!”
Honestly her mask is slipping with my sibling too. Her true colors show more and more as she gets older. She’s doing that thing of abandoning a lot of basic self responsibility stuff like washing her own cloths and getting her own food “parentifying” both of us.
My sibling is still in denial of the true matter of the situation and (begrudgingly) obliges, although I’m pretty sure their patience is running thin. I can tell what’s going on, so her requests for me to “parent” her are all met with firm “no”'s.
Oh! And her unwanted snarky mean comments are more frequent and nastier.
Heh… Maybe if I’m lucky the nonexistent gods will reschedule their “appointment with her” to happen a little sooner. The crows can see to “Mrs. Transphobe”'s funeral.
Mini bonus point 3.) Been going down something of an “autism rebirth” type pipeline or… Something?
It can essentially be summed up as “My autism isn’t the problem, the status quo is!”
Do like the adderal though. That genuinely helps me.
Been going down something of an “autism rebirth” type pipeline or… Something?
When I got my diagnosis, the first year was a bit of an un_mask_me renaissance, where so many missing pieces finally had a place where they fit. It was like discovering who I really was for the first time. I hope you find some empowerment and self love there, because you’re 10000% correct that it’s not the disability, it’s the way we treat disabilities as a whole.

I’ve been diagnosed since I was a toddler, so the experience is different to someone figuring out they’re autistic, but there are similarities.
Mostly been sparked by going out and physically meeting other autists. Them simply talking and existing has taught me a good few things about myself.
