Comrades across the country are trying to make sense of the outcome of the MO-1 Congressional race that saw Cori Bush defeated for the second time in a row. After losing her seat to former Saint Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell in 2024 (after a massive influx of money from AIPAC and other Zionist entities), she tried to make a comeback this year. There was a resolution drafted by stalwarts of STL-DSA’s electoral work at our 2025 chapter convention to “Draft Cori”, a resolution that passed unanimously. The movement in STL loves Cori. She rose from the trenches of Ferguson, where she served as a street medic, has been consistently involved in the struggle for justice for victims of police brutality, and serves as a tireless advocate of those cast adrift on the capitalist sea of shit. She camped out on the steps of the United States Capitol to secure an eviction moratorium for working people made unemployed by the COVID-19 pandemic, was the first to call for a ceasefire in Palestine, and generally is a good person and a staunch advocate for a better world. We are proud to have her as a comrade. Yet, she lost in the primary by a healthy margin. Bell garnered 83,663 votes to Cori’s 52,083, or 59% to 37%. It is in our interest as STL-DSA to ask ourselves why this happened, and what we need to change with regard to our electoral strategy and base building to avoid such a defeat in the future.
