Without getting TOO far into it, I had been struggling with finding motivation to continue playing, writing, and doing all the work that comes with being in a band for a long time. At least a year, maybe 2. I never said anything and kept pushing myself out of a sense of obligation to the others. One day back in March, I was trying to learn a riff someone else had written, and I just…lost it. Got up, said “fuck this, I’m going home,” and left the practice space. Didn’t say anything to anyone for a few days before apologizing for how I handled myself.
I got my stuff off my chest, we finished up our booking commitments for the year, and…that’s kinda been it. It’s been really nice having that time back, and I’m going through an IOP program now after my last hypomania episode and have been feeling pretty good the past few weeks. Stuff with my partner feels good. I’m back to playing video games, enjoying my time, and watching movies and anime. Hobbies I’ve had for years. Not once have I felt the urge to go play guitar, or even so much as visit the practice space.
Nobody in the band has really checked on me, aside from asking me for money for practice space rent (which is just done through a Zelle request really) or to pay off record pressing from last year. I don’t really listen to doom metal anymore. For a few years it’s been crust punk and more poppy punk I used to love in high school, with some folk thrown in. That’s if I even listen to anything at all. I don’t even play games with music on these days. Music does not move me anymore. I don’t really care. Other local musicians that I regularly see on social media, I don’t really talk to them about music, just politics and jokes and stuff. I don’t go to local shows, I barely go to shows in general unless it’s a band that means a lot to my partner. I don’t give two shits about what local bands have what going on, I don’t really talk to other musicians much at all. Never really did. When I would play shows, I was always a ghost from the time we finished load in/sound checks until stage time and load out.
All that said, the band (really, my project, I started it in my bedroom alone) is 10 years old this summer. I feel like part of me wants to just call it dead and done, and another part of me wants to hold on to it and maybe come back to it sometime when I feel like I can get invested and excited again. I just have no idea when that might be, if ever. If the other folks don’t feel up to working with me anymore, cool, I can just go back to doing shit on my own. It might even be nice to just write and record stuff without playing shows.
I don’t really know why I’m typing all this up, but I’ve felt like posting this would be good for me for a while, so here we are I guess. Thank you for your attention to this very important matter - DJT.
That sounds like a burnout. But it can be ypu changing as a person. It will be incredibly difficult to let go of something that has been part of you for so many years.
I just wish things work put for you in a good way.
Thanks homie
Honestly, take a break. Talk to your fellow band members, explain that you need a little time because you’re burnt out.
Give it some time and maybe listen to some stuff you don’t have a lot of exposure to.
Yeah, we’ve been on a break for a few months now. I know it’s all fine and good to put things on ice for a while, just still have a ton of feelings. Thanks comrade

10 years is a long time to be in a band.
I’m leaving this here so I remember to come back to it later.
Thanks comrade. People have really resonated with the project - someone gave me a copy of a book they wrote while listening to us, a film director in Mexico made a short video out of one of our songs, people really loved it. I just am having a hard time loving it back anymore.
Time for the solo album where you write a bunch of songs about a Wizard War
Faries ride corgis into battle in Welsh folklore so im sure I could have them be like Calvary or something
get on the list for some trump thing and then pull out of it like “woah we didn’t know it was a trump thing”
The only list I’ll ever be on is the list of [redacted]
I think you should just see this as an end of a chapter of your life and move on. You are much more than “person who plays guitar in a 10+ year old band.” Use the freed time to cultivate other aspects of what makes you you. This could be deepening relationships or finding new hobbies or taking on projects that you’ve previously put off because you didn’t have time. I think it would do you good to explore other artistic pursuits. Perhaps you have a lot going on that’s hard to musically express but is far more suitable with other artforms like poetry or painting or woodcarving or whatever.

That’s an excellent idea I hadn’t considered, thanks!
It’s good to take breaks, though at this point perhaps it would be good to pursue some of the solo stuff you’re talking about to at least a token degree. Speaking for myself, letting a part of myself and a set of skills and activities be synonymous in my head with a social situation I couldn’t stand was really harmful and I basically lost that part of myself when it wasn’t what the problem was. Idk if your situation is at all comparable, of course.
Thanks, appreciate the advice! The stuff I’m imagining in my head is stuff that others were less excited about when I presented it, so it would be a stylistic change for sure, but a welcome one to me.
Ten years is a long time and a great achievement, I think it’s fine that your motivation has changed, mellowed, or run its course. I hope you can take stock and place your complex feelings for your band in somewhere that feels ‘right’ and take the next step you think is best whether that means rekindling the fire or letting it smolder while you try solo stuff.

(Sorry if I’m just kinda repackaging what you’ve said, I wanna be supportive and recognise that you’re doing good, corgi)
Appreciate the words and support. Just airing myself out here
