Boot disk is Microsoft Windows 95 OSR2 - Boot Disk (Dell OEM) (3.5-1.44mb) and is mounted to Floppy Drive 1 (A:)
Windows 95 ISO is Microsoft Windows 95B (4.00.1111) (OSR2) [English] and is mounted to CD-ROM drive (D:)
I was able to run FDISK to set up a DOS partition and format the hard drive (C:) without issue. I then ran SETUP. SCANDISK confirmed that there were no issues with the drive. Then I got the line “Copying files needed for Windows setup” and… the installation process hung up there. For several hours. Obviously, something had gone wrong, and it was never going to end.
While troubleshooting online, I found a post that suggested copying the contents of the Windows 95 CD to the hard drive and running SETUP.EXE from there. I was able to do this (verifying that the drive is properly formatted) but I still got stuck on the “Copying files needed for Windows setup” step. Any recommendations for what I should try next?
Hadn’t heard of 86box. I’ll give it a spin in a few hours and see if I have any troubles.
is this the iso you’re using?
Thanks. I don’t know if the ISO you linked is the same one I got. I got mine from here.
Windows 95 originally didn’t support FAT32, limiting partition sizes to 2GB. OSR2 added FAT32 support but I dunno if the installer still properly supports it or not. I would bet the issue is related to that. You could try limiting the partition size to under 2GB and see if that helps.
Any reason not to use Windows 98SE for this? It would very likely not have this issue but games would work just as well.
And yes, when installing any Win 9.x, you want to to always copy the installation files to the hard disk first and run the setup from there. The main reason is that after the first reboot the system might not yet have the correct driver for the CD drive but it still needs access to the installation files to continue.
Any reason not to use Windows 98SE for this?
Not particularly. I just kind of picked 95 because I figured it would be the best fit for the era of games I had in mind. I’ll give 98 a shot. Thanks!
So I tried again with the Windows 98SE boot disk and ISO. Same result. Hangs up on “Copying files needed for Windows setup” step.
Just to be sure, I tried once more using a 1.5GB disk partition, even though that shouldn’t be an issue with Windows 98. Same result. Hangs up on “Copying files needed for Windows setup.”
EDIT: Okay, wow, finally got it installed. This has been a journey.
Tried changing the machine to an Acer V60N with an Intel Pentium Pro CPU. This got me an error on the “copying files” step, which was that there was a VGA adapter issue. Fiddling with display settings, I switched the display adapter from the IBM CGA (the default I’d never looked at and in hindsight a major oversight on my part) to an S3 Vision968. Ran setup again. Got to the GUI of the Windows 98 setup, only to be told that 8MB of RAM wasn’t enough. Upgraded to 64MB, ran setup, got a general protection fault. Did a bit of Googling, reduced RAM to 32MB, ran the setup again. It’s up and running now, and I’m happily playing The Journeyman Project.
Nice! And I think that was a pretty authentic experience of what it was like to get Win 9.x running back in the day xD
Lmao you tried to install Win95 with 8mb ram and a cga card? Lucky that it was a silly issue but lol

Isn’t 8MB RAM the recommended for Windows 95?
But yeah the CGA thing, I legit did not even know I was using a CGA display until I saw that error and checked. I didn’t expect 86box to default to such an obsolete format and I was so convinced it was something to do with the hard disk and/or RAM and/or CPU that I didn’t think to look.
Huh, 4mb minimum I’m reading? I thought 16mb was required, shows what I know.
I guess CGA is default because it’s the easiest to run? Weird indeed though.
