The people I work with are so incredibly out of touch with what real work is. A computer is not going to puke, piss, shit, or cum on you, and you get to use it while seated in a climate controlled environment. Yet they think their jobs are hard
I work white collar and slightly agree. But the hard part is the people. They are making it unnecessarily hard and don’t even realize it doesn’t have to be.
Someone will message you at 4:15pm for something that’s “urgent” so you check and it’s something that has been broken for 3 years and the people that worked on it quit already or were laid off. But you can’t tell them that because higher ups don’t like hearing no so your manager expects you to bend over backwards to resolve a problem urgently that could really wait another 2 years. And some workers get excited to bend over for higher ups on meaningless shit and the rest of us who push back get looked at as uncooperative.
It’s like playing survivor where you can only get shit done by manipulating people but you don’t get a million dollars at the end.
This is the true difficulty of white collar work. I’ve done blue and pink collar work, and I’m glad I’m not anymore, but the politics and surveillance from bosses in white collar fucking sucks, and the coworkers are all too chickenshit to even think about a union.
Also, anybody who thinks all white collar work is easy needs to do outbound phonebanking work for a shady company. I had a stint making “warm calls” that were basically cold calls for a shady online university (Capella University) and I would absolutely take the graveyard shift at the nursing home over that again.
At least at the nursing home, the residents were mostly glad I was there when I came around. Terribly understaffed, had to handwash shitrags with a sprayer that ran too hard and gave you splashback, had to deal with assholes who called you racial slurs while you were wiping their asses.
Still better than waking up some guy at 4am in hawaii to try and pitch him a degree he briefly thought about pursuing 3 years ago. That’s scum level work and everyone running a cold call phone bank should be strung high from a beam and left to rot
I often express it as the broom-and-mop rule.
If you’re not sweeping and mopping as part of your job, someone else needs to be hired to do the sweeping and mopping that you don’t do yourself.
Almost every job I’ve had has involved the expectation of cleaning the workspace.
