It’s brilliantly shot, and the way they portray the dynamic of a gaslight and downtrodden wife versus the bumbling manchild husband that you see in shows like Family Guy and The Simpsons is a brilliant critique of the dominant male and the societal currents that support it.
Hell, the way that the husband absorbs the contradictions arising from their relationship into reinforcing this dynamic is very reflective of how neoliberalism absorbs and co-opts its contradictions and used fascism to close ranks when under threat.
I liked it. Didn’t like that the detective lady was just so shitty and the show doesn’t acknowledge it. Like she’s a normal shitty girlfriend and Kevin is a monster, but we’re still supposed to see it as cute when she keeps being really manipulative and pushy.

They treated me like an intern and the pay was crap, so I dipped out when my contract was up

It should tell you a lot that I went from working as a Story Editor to delivering mail and enjoyed the latter far more even with the lack of breaks and heavy lifting
This is why if my writing career takes off, i’m going to start my own production studio and do my damndest to have the staff treated well

I love the way the camera switches from dark and gritty to 90s sitcom on a dime
Often in the same “joke”. We never get to see Kevin in the gritty format since it’s his show, but the way they can take a kinda standard, slightly mysoginist sitcom joke and immediately recontectualize it in a way where the abusive relationship is obvious and painful is great.
Yep, and it really hits home that Kevin’s life never has to be serious or difficult. It’s a brilliant metaphor for his class position and how it enables him to absorb contradictions around him.

Thank you for recommending this. Maybe I was slow to pick up on some subtle differences, but it seemed like so much of an old sitcom for so much of the first episode that I was thinking of turning it off and deleting the rest of the episodes I torrented. Then I remembered that a hexbear recommended it and kept watching. Now on the second episode, very likely to binge all of them before setting foot in the oven that is the outside.
OK, now I’ve seen the whole thing. One thing that I wondered about was the genre of the non-sitcom part of the show. Given its willingness to break rules in general, I wondered if the show was going to berate me for getting wrapped up in a soap opera just because it let me feel superior to sitcom fans. It was kinda not that deep.
