
My pet theory is that it’s no coincidence that these moral panics about occultist/demonic kids media and satanic cults engaging in ritualistic murders sprang up right at the same time as the crime wave of the 80’s and early 90’s. It was a way for conservative Christians to assign the fault of that to a metaphysical Other, satan’s influence, rather than the social and economic factors they helped bring forth.

The only good thing to come out of the Satanic Panic was when people figured out that if you play Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” backwards, it vaguely sounds like Freddie Mercury is telling you to “start to smoke marijuana”
