Did a bit more digging and his actual artist name and Twitter name is Foundring. I HIGHLY do not recommend searching his name so I’ll just say that yeah, fuck this guy. How he hasn’t been banned yet is fucking beyond me.
Yeah I came across his twitter and thereby saw the videos he was putting out, there is no deniability as far as I’m concerned. There is a banjo player on YT by the name of Clifton Hicks that does a lot of old time music that is less egregious than this, but he really rides on the coattails of black music history and denigrates black musicians who are truly trying to revive that history. The sort of guy who gets oddly defensive when you point out this behavior, I’m sure we’ve all seen the type.
I highly recommend Rhiannon Giddens as someone who is carrying forward the black American music tradition both on her own and with her band the Carolina Chocolate Drops. TIL she was a musical advisor on the movie Sinners! I also came across the name Jake Blount, I’m not familiar with him but it sounds like he has a similar bent but in a genderqueer Afrofuturist direction.

I had this guy pop up in my recommended too, he has some new age rag time songs about trans people (that I’m assuming he wrote) further in his post history so he is firmly aligning himself with the alt right. At first I was like “Okay performing old time songs, some of which were written by black people, it is what it is” but he makes other decisions to dogwhistle his audience into what he’s pitching.
