Fuel prices are expected to rise within hours following a major fire at one of Australia’s last remaining oil refineries. The blaze impacted a facility responsible for a significant share of the national fuel supply, reigniting fears of shortages.
I’m obviously not a golfer but I noticed they mentioned ‘the last two remaining refineries’ or some such. Is there a reason there is only two (now one)? Did something happen to disable others? Did they get mothballed?
It’s an Australia thing. Tons of natural resources and an extraction-based economy, but very little manufacturing. We do the same thing with food, mining, wool, etc; export raw materials and import finished goods. It’s offshoring of labour to places with less stringent worker protections and externalising social and environmental costs of heavy manufacturing.
I just watched this recently and it seemed to have some context on that situation https://youtu.be/NpBV222ULd8
